Death and Other Details Episode 4 (‘Hidden’) Recap & Ending Explained: “Death and Other Details,” created by Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams, is a Hulu murder mystery series set on the luxury ocean liner SS Varuna. The cruise ship is commissioned by the superrich Collier family. However, the brutal murder of a man on the second night of the travel in the middle of the Meditteranean Sea and the subsequent investigation by renowned detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin) shines a light on the darkest secrets of the Collier family and their business, political associates. By the end of the third episode, ‘Troublesome,’ Interpol Agent Hilde Eriksen’s (Linda Emond) suspicion falls upon the ship’s security chief, Jules Toussaint (Hugo Diego Garcia).
Nevertheless, it is clear to us that he is innocent since he spent the night of the murder with our protagonist, Imogene (Violette Beane). Yet there was a feeling that Jules was hiding something. As Imogene moves into the ship’s lower decks, following the enigmatic Leila Collier (Pardis Saremi), she instead comes across Jules. “Death and Other Details” episode 4, ‘Hidden,’ clears some doubts about Jules and even zeroes in on Danny’s murderer. But of course, this is only the 4th episode in a ten-episode series. So, naturally, it’s hinted that Danny’s murder is linked to the shady past of the Collier family and to one particular name. Spoilers Ahead.
Death and Other Details Episode 4 ‘Hidden’ Recap:
The Hunt for Jules
“Death and Other Details” episode 4 opens six months before the current events as Sunil Bhandari (Rahul Kohli) is going over the VR experience of his new cruise ship to use it as a sales tool. Later, while walking the streets and speaking on the phone with his ship’s manager, Teddy Goh (Angela Zhou), Sunil is surrounded by thugs. Out of nowhere, Jules comes and beats the knife-wielding thug. The subsequent conversation over a pint brings up SS Varuna and the fact that Sunil’s head of security just quit.
Sunil recalls all this to Rufus in the present. The famous sleuth and bullshit-caller guesses that even the thugs could have been hired by Jules. Moreover, modern technological advancements give people like Jules enough space to maneuver around background checks and other triggers. But as Rufus wonders, “Is Jules a killer?” Jules is also on the run. Therefore, Rufus wants to uncover the reason behind it. Agent Hilde asks the security guards to find their boss, a man who is wanted in three countries, and calls him a career criminal.
What Is Jules Hiding?
Anna Collier (Lauren Patten) is at Eleanor Chun’s (Karoline) suite to try to negotiate their deal again. Anna is waiting for Celia Chun (Lisa Lu), who it seems won’t show up. Just as Anna tries to leave the suite, a guard posted outside stops her. He says no one can leave their room until the killer is found. The rich aren’t used to following orders. Hence, when Katherine Collier (Jayne Atkinson) and Governor Alexandra (Tamberla Perry) are asked to stay in the pool deck, it takes more than a few words from Agent Hilde to follow her order.
Katherine is seen calling their family lawyer, Llewellyn Mathers (Jere Burns), who is still not taking his calls. In the ship’s lower deck, Jules ties Imogene to a pipe. Imogene’s first thought was that Jules and Leila were both involved in it. But Jules says he doesn’t know Leila. Imogene wonders why Jules didn’t report her to Interpol since the missing footage on the night of Danny’s murder is directly linked to her. Jules states he didn’t want to throw suspicion on her just to save himself. Moreover, they were together in bed that night.
Imogene suggests that since they know either of them isn’t involved in the murder, she can help him with his problem. Jules unties her and takes her further down the claustrophobic spaces of the ship. He shows Imogene, a Ukrainian refugee family, stowing away in a small cabin. Jules has been doing this (saving refugees) for a long time, which is linked to his tragic past of losing his parents – something Imogene can understand. Subsequently, Imogene meets the Ukrainian family – a mother, a father, and a teenage daughter.
Is Yeva a Crucial Witness in the Murder Case?
The daughter, Yeva (Sofia Rosinsky), can speak some English. Imogene looks at Yeva’s pants, which are dirty around the knees. There‘s a single vent in the cabin. In private, Imogene says Yeva might have often gone outside the room through the vents. In fact, she could be a witness in the murder case. Imogene wants to question Yeva, which can reveal who the killer is and consequently prove Jules is innocent. Agent Hilde visits Llewellyn Mathers’ suite. She finds him tied up in the closet. This is not related to the murder. Llewellyn’s predicament is rather due to a BDSM session gone wrong. When the lawyer doesn’t give the name of the person who was involved with him in the activity, Agent Hilde confines him to a cell.
Rufus gets the secret message from Imogene and finds her at their usual rendezvous point. Imogene takes Rufus to Jules. But they realize Sunil and Teddy have followed them. After a minor altercation between Sunil and Jules, the focus turns to questioning the daughter of the Ukrainian family. Yeva says she had explored most of the ship by moving through the vents. However, since she was too close to the floor, she couldn’t see much. But three nights ago, on the day of the murder, when Yeva climbed up the vents, she heard a scream, a loud noise, and then total silence.
Treading on Yeva’s Memories
Outside, Sunil accuses Jules of putting everyone in harm’s path for his own quest. Teddy and Sunil know if Interpol finds refugees on their ship, it’s all over for them. So Teddy suggests they must help the refugees before the Interpol gets to them. Inside the small cabin, Rufus effortlessly trains Imogene on the art of questioning a witness. Since Yeva didn’t see anything, the scream can be associated with Danny’s killing. What’s significant is the loud noise, which Yeva says sounded like something heavy had dropped to the floor. When Imogene asks if it sounded like metal, Yeva immediately acknowledges it and says it went ‘clank.’
Rufus calls this leading the witness. Imogene knows the killer’s weapon was a harpoon gun, but Yeva doesn’t. Leading a witness is different from prompting a witness to answer from their own memory. Now that Imogene has mentioned ‘metal,’ Rufus believes Imogene’s memory of the events has colored the witness’ version. Nevertheless, Imogene finds some scrapes on Yeva’s hands. The girl states it happened after the loud noise when she scrambled back. At this point, Yeva’s memory brings up a crucial image: a woman wearing heels – black with gold spikes. The identity of that woman is easy to find. She’s just standing outside. It is Teddy Goh.
Is Teddy Goh the Murderer?
Meanwhile, Anna and Eleanor are still confined to the suite. It is apparent that Eleanor, who has been with Anna in the past, doesn’t like Anna’s wife, Leila. Anna herself has some misgivings about Leila’s recent behavior. When Anna worryingly conveyed the news of the murder, Leila received it calmly. Moreover, Leila was not in the room with Anna on the night of the murder. When questioned about it, Leila simply says she went for a walk. In the present, the conversation between Anna and Eleanor touches on Eleanor’s activities after she left Anna. Eleanor makes clear that even after letting go of Anna, she is still obsessed with her. This naturally leads to them sharing an intimate moment, which might affect Anna’s personal and professional life at a later point.
Teddy Goh confesses that she does like making men scream. But it’s not related to killing. As Rufus said, leading a witness can impede the investigation. The girl heard a scream and a loud noise and saw a woman wearing heels. But it was a different suite, where Llewellyn was realizing his kink. Teddy says she likes the dominatrix role since it relieves her stress of catering to rich people. In this roleplaying, she has control over things. Rufus easily guesses Llewellyn is Teddy’s client from the mark on his wrists.
Who Lied for Whom?
Nevertheless, questioning Teddy gives Imogene and Rufus a new perspective. During Rufus’ initial round of questioning, Teddy and her sister Winnie (Annie Q. Riegel) provided each other an alibi for the night of the murder. Teddy and Winnie said they shared a room and were together between midnight and eight a.m. According to Teddy, no one knows her dominatrix identity (including Winnie). Therefore, Imogene and Rufus rightly guess it was Winnie who asked Teddy to lie for her and provide the alibi.
Two private conversations on the ship make it look like more things are at play. While dining with Father Toby (Danny Johnson), Celia Chun reveals that she knows about his affair with Katherine Collier. What does Celia want from the priest? On the pool deck, Alexandra and Katherine talk about a Zoning deal that didn’t go to the Collier family. Alexandra wonders if that’s the reason why Lawrence Collier set her up in the murder of Keith Trubitsky. She also mildly intimidates Katherine that she will let the investigators know ‘everything’ if the murder is pinned on her.
Death and Other Details Episode 4 ‘Hidden’ Ending Explained:
The Staged Arrest and a Confession
At this point, Rufus comes to the pool deck and announces that the killer is caught. He says it is Teddy Goh, which unsettles Winnie, who is working on the deck. Later, Winnie comes to the cell and asks Interpol to let her sister go. Agent Hilde understands the arrest of Teddy by Rufus was a staged one. The real culprit is Winnie, and she, in fact, confesses to killing Keith, aka Danny. However, as Hilde and Rufus question Winnie, it seems like her motive doesn’t add up. Did she really kill Keith, aka Danny, for insulting her and for being an insensitive rich man?
But Rufus’ theory that the killer hid himself in the bar cart is confirmed in Winnie’s confession. Winnie also mentions that from inside the cart, she saw Imogene smashing Keith’s watch and stealing his cash. Agent Hilde is convinced that Winnie is a murderer and moves to do the paperwork. Meanwhile, when the security guards find out about the stowaways, Jules diverts the guards’ attention to him as Imogene and Sunil help the Ukrainian family escape in Sunil’s boat. Back at her suite, when Alexandra opens her laptop, she sees a blackmail email showing pictures of her and Tripp Collier having sex and doing drugs.
What Does Leila Know about Danny’s Murder?
“Death and Other Details” episode 4 ends with Rufus stumbling upon Leila Collier, hiding in a closet on the ship’s lower deck. When Rufus says the killer has been found and there’s nothing to worry about, Leila nonchalantly mentions the type of killer they might have found. She wonders if the person is young and tech-savvy and if the motive doesn’t add up. Leila goes on to mention that Rufus had caught only one of the killer’s followers. Looking at the confusion on Rufus’ face, Leila says, “Danny didn’t tell you?” Of course, Danny had come across some vital information that killed him. But what’s intriguing is that Leila knows Keith’s real identity, i.e., Danny Turner. Then she asks, “How much do you know about Viktor Sams?”
Is the elusive Viktor Sams – the name that popped up during the investigation of Imogene’s mom’s murder – behind the killing of Danny? Under whose identity is Viktor Sams traveling on the cruise ship? What’s his connection with the Colliers? How did Leila know about Danny, and what else does she know? There are more questions, although most of the ship’s guests will now relax, believing the killer has been caught.
