Directed by Michael Pearce, Apple TV’s “Echo Valley” (2025) is an evasively incoherent thriller. Swinging between heavy melodrama and palatable twists, the film is rescued and exalted by a fantastically engaged Julianne Moore. Although billed as the second lead, Sydney Sweeney has less to do than Domhnall Gleeson and Fiona Shaw, both of whom bolster Moore’s riveting turn.  “Echo Valley” puts a grieving widow to come to terms with her doting mother nature, while traversing the world of psychotic drug dealers and dead bodies.

Echo Valley (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Kate Garretson (Julianne Moore) is recovering from the death of her wife, Patty. When you are grieving, every day is a struggle. The only relief for Kate is Patty’s old messages and the farm they owned together. The horses, their dog ‘Coop,’ and the acres of open land remain as fond reminders. However, this farm, named ‘Echo Valley’ (the title of the film), demands significant effort and money for its upkeep. So, Kate goes to her ex-husband, Richard (a blink and you miss Kyle MacLachlan), for a loan. Richard, reluctantly, writes her a check. Through the former couple’s conversations, we understand that they have a daughter together.

This daughter, Claire (Sydney Sweeney), is seemingly the bane of Kate and Richard’s existence. Claire has struggled with addiction for her entire adult life, which is just starting, by the way. The young woman has failed to respond to Kate’s many attempts to rehabilitate her. So, when she and, eventually, her boyfriend Ryan (Edmund Donovan), appear at the farm, it heralds bad news. It appears the pair has lost ten thousand dollars’ worth of drugs, and their psychotic dealer is after them. This dealer, Jackie (Domhnall Gleeson), is dangerous. When Kate refuses to lend any more money, an enraged Claire attacks her. However, Kate stands her ground with great effort. Claire and Ryan leave.

A couple of days pass. One night, Claire knocks at Kate’s door again. One look at Claire and Kate knows something serious has gone down with her this time. Claire tells her that she and Ryan got into a fight, and she accidentally pushed him towards a slope. Through her tears, Claire informs Kate that Ryan died after crashing his head on a rock. Kate’s maternal instincts kick in, and she asks Claire to remove her clothes and wait in her room. Kate finds the wrapped dead body in the back seat of Claire’s car. She clears Claire’s prints and then proceeds to dump the body in a lake.

After coming back, drenched and full of regrets, she confirms to Claire that the matter has been taken care of. Claire hugs her mother. It appears that the experience might have been the final straw, and she is gravitating towards a clean life with Kate. The next day, a vehement Claire informs Kate that Jackie has threatened her, and she is worried Jackie might find out about Ryan. Kate takes care of that as well. She meets Jackie and gives him the ten thousand dollars, the money she got from Richard. Just when it seems everything is finally going to work out for the mother-daughter duo, Claire disappears.

She reaches that location to find a drugged Claire in a dilapidated house. To her utter shock, Kate sees that Claire is accompanied by none other than Ryan. As she tries to talk to Claire, the troubled couple flees the scene. A devastated Kate returns to the farm. She is visited by her old friend, Leslie (Fiona Shaw). Kate meets with Jackie the next day. Jackie tells her the full story. The dead guy is a young man named Greg Kaminski. He was one of the customers of Ryan. Ryan’s contaminated product caused Greg’s overdose. A panicked Ryan and Claire came to Jackie. That is when Jackie gave them the idea to dupe Kate. Claire convinced them that her mother would do anything to protect her. That is why she pretended to be the ‘killer.’ Kate took the bait and took care of the body.

Now, Jackie wants more money. He overpowers Kate and drugs her. He confiscates her phone, takes all the keys so that she cannot communicate with anyone else. However, he was not aware of Kate’s iPad. Using the iPad, Kate placed a call to Leslie. The next morning, Kate informs Jackie about her plan. She plans to burn her farm down and collect the insurance money. That is the only way she can give Jackie any money. Jackie is convinced. They decide to light the flare after midnight.

Before evening, however, one of Kate’s clients comes to the farm for saddles. Jackie gets panicked. Kate offers to talk with her and guide her away. Jackie chooses not to take the risk of Kate getting any help; he goes to talk with the woman himself. The woman leaves with the saddles after rebuffing Jackie’s offer of help. So, the night comes, and Kate ignites the fire. The barn and the house burn entirely. The next morning, the police arrive. They doubt the ‘accidental’ nature of the disaster.

As Kate starts to recount her ‘story,’ we realize how she planned the entire thing with Leslie to trap Jackie. From Leslie, Kate learns the sure-fire (pun intended) way to ensure that the fire does not pass off as an accident. She intentionally leaves the metallic wire of a flare. She never wanted the incident to be passed off as an accident. Moreover, she wanted it to pass off as an arson committed by Jackie. After seeing her light the flare, Jackie leaves. What he does not notice is that Leslie was there as well. With her help, Kate had already recovered Greg Kaminski’s body from the lake and placed it at the house that was going to be burned.

The goal is to give the impression that Greg Kaminski is killed by his dealer, Jackie. And then Jackie burned the entire house down to remove evidence. When Jackie met with Kate’s client, that was a clever bit of design from Kate’s part as well. With that woman’s testimony, police can place Jackie at the farm as well. Kate even transferred money to Jackie’s account so that her story about Jackie being her employee remains air-tight. Without knowing all this, Jackie denies knowing Kate when the police first question him. He thought Kate got caught. That was his mistake. He was not aware of what Kate had been spinning. With bank transfer details and the woman’s testimony, Jackie got stamped as a liar. He is arrested.

Did Claire Return?

As Jackie got blamed for arson, Kate got the insurance money, alright. She starts to use that money by doing the necessary renovations her farm needs, the farm that once belonged to Patty. As she seems to get her old enthusiasm back, we see a crying Claire at the doorstep. Now, after scarpering from her mother, Claire has texted her many times, expressing regret and hinting at self-harm. But Kate did not respond. She could not initially, not when she was taken as a hostage by Jackie. Even after that, it seems Kate has finally learned to accept that Claire is never going to become the daughter she hoped for.

By the end of the film, we see Kate returning to Patty’s old messages, with one new detail. She has started to listen to the messages where Claire has been present as well — Claire in her fallible but friendly avatar. This goes to show Kate has accepted to put Claire in the past as well. She knows that it is only in the past, she can find her sweet daughter, like her wife. So, when in the final scene, we see Claire appear at her mother’s doorstep once again, we cannot help but be worried. Kate is worried too. She looks at Claire with exasperation and a bit of hope that she is not standing there in real. Kate tends to dream. Perhaps it is one of those bad dreams.
