Richard Linklater‘s upcoming “Nouvelle Vague” is being described as a “comedy” and a “love letter” to the French New Wave, Godard, and his contemporaries. In an interview, the auteur confirmed the project and went on to describe it as being “like a New Wave film.”

“Nouvelle Vague” is Linklater’s first project that is shot entirely in French. The film focuses on the behind-the-scenes story of the ‘Nouvelle Vague Movement’ in French cinema, particularly the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking film A Bout de Souffle (Breathless).

“Breathless” is a 1960 French New Wave crime drama film written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard.  It stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as a wandering criminal named Michel and Jean Seberg as his American girlfriend Patricia. The film was Godard’s first feature-length work. It has since been considered one of the best films ever made. Breathless” was based loosely on a newspaper article that François Truffaut read in The News in Brief.

For the unversed, Nouvelle Vague, literally translated as The New Wave, a.k.a. The French New Wave, is a French art film movement that emerged in the late 1950s. The movement was characterized by its rejection of traditional filmmaking conventions in favor of experimentation. New Wave filmmakers explored new approaches to editing, visual style, and narrative, as well as engagement with the social and political upheavals of the era, often making use of irony or exploring existential themes. Among those filmmakers was Jean-Luc Godard.

As for the upcoming Linklater film, David Chambille will serve as the cinematographer for “Nouvelle Vague. The film will be shot in black and white with a 1:33:1 aspect ratio, just like Godard’s “Breathless” was lensed in 1959.
