George Floyd’s story is set to reach a global audience through his upcoming biopic titled Daddy Changed the World. Floyd was a black American man who was murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25, 2020. His death sparked an awakening across the globe that shed a light on police brutality that still resonates today.

According to Variety, Floyd’s biopic will be produced by Radar Pictures, 8 Queens Film & Media Productions, and Night Fox Entertainment. Floyd’s daughter, Gianna Floyd, and her mother, Roxie Washington, are also contributing to the film to tell Floyd’s story to the world, as they will serve as executive producers. Floyd’s life story will be penned by acclaimed screenwriter Gregory R. Anderson, who is known for writing the script for the 2007 film Stomp the Yard.

Washington said in a statement that the film will embody the essence of Floyd’s life and hopefully bring back efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which aims to address systemic racism and potentially save lives. She said,

“We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all.”

The loss the family endured is really hard to even think of. While discussing the film, Washington also emphasized making swift amendments to the current legal system. She also expressed her gratitude to those who stood up and protested in the summer of 2020 and beyond. She said,

“We need to make changes swiftly. No other child should lose their father like Gianna did. We thank everyone who stood with us and protested. George’s legacy will live on through this film.”

George Floyd’s biopic will offer a raw take on his life

Yes, the main aim of the film is to make the world aware of the injustice George Floyd went through before giving up his life. The biopic is indeed being made to honor the legacy of George Floyd, but it will also not shy away from the fact that Floyd was not a perfect person.

Floyd was born in North Carolina and was brought up in Houston, Texas. Between 1997 and 2005, he served eight jail terms on various charges, including drug possession, theft, and trespass.

Floyd was initially arrested after a convenience store clerk called the police on him, alleging that he tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill, which led to his arrest. Derek Chauvin, one of four police officers who arrived on the scene, knelt on Floyd’s neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, causing his death from a lack of oxygen. Following his murder, protests against police brutality, especially towards black people, quickly spread across the United States and globally. His dying words, “I can’t breathe,”  became a rallying slogan.

Daddy Changed the World will instead be a “gritty drama of a man and his community thrust into the fiery light of history” while showing many flaws in Floyd.

Daddy Changed the World is still searching for a director, so there’s no word yet on casting or when the film will go into production, and a release date has not been set.
