A thrilling triumphant at the box office is what Warner Bros. and Legendary have been experiencing consecutively. After the whooping box-office success of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part II, which cleared the $600 million mark worldwide, another film made under their production banner,Godzilla x Kong: New Empire has turned out to be victorious, garnering a financial boost beyond expectations at the Box Office.

The film opened to a monstrous $80 million at the domestic box office, which was way ahead of its expectation of $45 million to $55 million. It’s indeed no small feat for a fifth film in a franchise to score the second-best opening in the MonsterVerse Universe

The Frenemy Monstrous film ‘Godzilla x Kong: New Empire’ enjoys whooping commercial success at the box office

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned $194 million globally on its launch after taking in $114 million overseas from 64 markets, including an impressive $44 million in China, where Legendary East is handling the movie. What’s impressive here is that many Hollywood movies still need to come close to doing that level of business in China these days.

Godzilla x Kong opened to $12.8 million in Mexico, a franchise best, and delivered the studio’s biggest opening ever in India ($5.5 million). The movie also has a handful of major markets yet to open. The film’s commercial score is evidently skyrocketing, although many critics didn’t think highly of Godzilla x Kong. Nevertheless, the audience gave it an A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrack.

What led the film to this humongous success is the diverse audience it has been attracting, which includes all key age groups. In terms of gender, males are buying more than 67 percent of tickets, while 62 percent are aged 35 and under.

Mary Parent, chairman of worldwide production for Legendary, expressed her excitement, stating, “This is certainly an exciting result. The film does a great job for the core fans and succeeded in broadening the audience. It played to a new and younger audience.”

Meanwhile, another reason why the film earned so well at the box office is that it had no major competition to speak of, as Sony’s new Ghostbusters movie, which opened last weekend, fell 65 percent. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire earned $15.7 million for a domestic total of $73.5 million and a lackluster $108.5 million globally.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the film stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens. The franchise’s fifth installment follows the two mega monsters teaming up to face a mysterious force that threatens to destroy their planet.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released on March 29, 2024, and is running successfully in theaters.
