Happiness Battle (Season 1), Episode 4 Recap:

The episode begins with Jang putting the kids to bed in their home. Jang has a nightmare that Yu Jin is killing her and wakes up in shock to find Ji Yul on her, waking her up. Jang’s morning is eventful, burning the breakfast she made for the kids because she had to take care of Ha Yul’s washroom business. Jung Ah comes to her rescue but uses it as an excuse to find the evidence Yu Jin had on her. Jang finds her in Yu Jin’s office, and Jang tells her that her house’s structure is the opposite of her own house, and she has come to find a hairpin.

Jung Ah asks her if she would keep Yu Jin’s family portrait as seeing a dead person every day is eerie. Jung Ah discovers from Jang that Jang and Yu Jin have not been in touch since junior high and have reunited after 18 years. After dropping the kids at school, Jung Ah insists Jang join her and the other moms for lunch. At first, she refuses, but after Jung Ah points out that she has not thanked the other mothers for helping find Ji Yul and Ha Yul, she decides to go for lunch. She says that she needs a new card key to enter the building. Jung Ah threatens security and gets Jang a new card key.

Jung Ah takes her to where the other mothers are waiting. Jang places the cutlery in her left hand. Na Young takes the opportunity to annoy Jang by asking if sisters take after each other and if she thinks eating with her left hand makes her look cool. As the mothers discuss Yu Jin, Na Young looks at Jang and says that she hopes that one rotten apple does not spoil the integrity of the rest. Jang excuses herself and leaves the lunch meeting before the food arrives. Jung Ah is annoyed with Na Young for embarrassing Jang.

Jang wants to focus on solving the murder case but realizes she has a lot of household chores to do. She posts in the group chat asking for advice to care for young girls, and all the other mothers chime in to help her out. She goes grocery shopping, arranges the medicine cabinet, and takes care of their books to help them study, as advised by the other mothers.

The mothers have a unique way of deciding who will pay for the brunch. They each text their partners asking to buy a designer bag, and the mother whose husband does not approve will have to pay for the brunch. Jung Ah’s husband gives her approval, and the other mothers tell her how envious they are that her partner is nine years younger than her and that if she were not worried, he would leave her. Jung Ah tells them that her husband knows who has the power at home, and she is sure that he will not leave her. Na Young takes a jab at her by asking if she is not certain of his love towards her, and Jung Ah says she that she is certain about that too. As Na Young is yet to receive the text, she is supposed to pay for the brunch. But as they are leaving, she receives an approving text from her husband but she takes the bill anyway.

Jang visits her mother who badmouths Yu Jin, saying a realtor had once told her that Yu Jin’s face screamed misfortune and her gaze was spiteful. Jang cuts up her conversation with her mother to pick up the kids from school. She reaches late and the kids are quiet; Jang asks Jo if something has happened and she explains that they had an argument and that they will not tell her what they fought about but soon apologize to each other and things go back to normalcy.

Jang gives them sweets and they both start arguing again. Ji Yul asks Ha Yul not to talk about their mother. Jang asks her why not, and she explains that all the grown-ups, including her, hate it and that it is the wrong thing to do. Jang tells them that it is okay to do so, and the grown-ups are sad. She takes them to the playground to plant a sapling in Yu Jin’s memory. Jung Ah tells her that they are going to the kids’ cafĂ© the next day and asks her to join them, and she agrees. As she is planting the sapling, she hurts herself and recalls seeing a Band-Aid on Na Young’s fingers in the same spot. Jang goes to the washroom to fill the water in the watering can and Na Young follows her.

Na Young asks Jang not to do anything to stand out and get lost quietly. Jang asks her why she hates her so much, and she tells her that she will do what she wants. She asks her what she meant by not standing out and if she is talking about Yu Jin. Jang strikes a chord with these words, making Na Young react in anger. Na Young tells her that her reaction was more honest than expected and walks off. Jang meets Ji Ye as she is about to enter her building and asks her to join her and the kids for dinner.

Jang asks Ji Ye what she meant by the other mothers having a grudge against Yu Jin. Ji Ye tells her not to believe everything she sees on social media and explains that Na Young is the type to feel jealous easily and spreads rumors all the time, but Yu Jin is the opposite. She tells her irrespective of these differences, they were always with each other. As Jang takes the elevator, she notices the CCTV camera and goes and speaks to the security guard, who confirms that Na Young had fought to get the CCTV put up so that crimes do not go unnoticed.

Jung Ah asks Na Young to meet her for beer. When Na Young arrives, Jung Ah asks her if she has uprooted the plant, and she denies doing so. She asks her what Jang said and Jung Ah tells her that she is determined to find out who has uprooted the sapling. Na Young tells her that this is why she did not want her around the neighborhood. Jung Ah says that we should keep enemies closer. While leaving, Jung Ah asks her what had happened to her finger and that it looks like a wire cut it. Jung Ah watches Na Young from afar, and Na Young is anxious and panics. Jung Ah meets Jo, and she tells her that she is going to meet a friend. She then meets one of her brothers, and he tells her to give honey tea to her husband as he is drunk and takes off, saying he is going to meet someone.

She sees Jo and the bracelet and screams out loud that it is disgusting and she needs to die and speeds up but eventually turns the car hurting herself.

Na Young and Jo are both in the hospital. Na Young’s husband comes to see her and talks to Jang. He tells her that she seems to have anger management issues and that this was not the first time she reacted that way. He also tells her that Na Young does not seem to remember what she had done owing to her impulse. Jang sees Na Young’s social media post about being in the hospital but needs to attend the meeting. Jang leaves the kids with Jin Seop and attends the meeting.

When Jang comes to the location, she sees that it is a formal event, while Jung Ah had led her to believe it was to be casual. Realizing how she is dressed, she decides to walk back. Na Young drinks too much and causes a scene, making her husband take her outside to get some air. Outside, Na Young yells at her husband, asking him to admit how he felt when another kid’s mother touched him and that he wanted to leave her. Both Na Young and her husband notice Jang watching them.

At home, Jin Seop plays hide and seek with the kids and Ji Yul finds a box filled with photographs which she accidentally kicks and then, carries some photos from it outside. Jin Seop takes it away from them, saying it was not for kids to see, and asks if the man in the photo is their father.

The episode ends with Jang returning home to find the photographs. She realizes the man in the photo is Na Young’s husband, and only the woman’s hand is seen. The hand has the same bracelet Yu Jin had, and Jang is shocked to learn about this.
