iNumber Number: Jozi Gold (2023): Movie Ending, Explained: ‘iNumber Number: Jozi Gold’ is a South-African crime action-adventure flick streaming on Netflix. Peppered with groovy music tracks and filled with entertaining characters, it stars S’Dumo Mtshali, Presley Chweneyagae, Brenda Ngxoli, and Noxolo Dlamini in the central roles.
Written and directed by Donovan Marsh, this Netflix flick presents a cop’s journey to find a balance between his conscience and the law. However, it is so in love with all its wacky elements that it often feels overstuffed with them. There are exciting moments here and there in this adventurous ride that follows a cop going undercover to learn some things about himself.

The film begins with a police officer going undercover to get a criminal – Hyena Man, behind bars. Chili (S’Dumo Mtshali) decides to take on this risky mission because he is tired of not being able to make any impact through his police work. His friend and fellow officer, Shoes (Presley Chweneyagae), feels the same. He and Chili share a strong bond because they grew up together in a home for abandoned kids. He also wants to make a difference, but the criminals they catch keep getting acquitted.
During the mission, while Chili walks into Hyena Man’s den in disguise, Shoes remains outside, in a van. Shoes’s wife calls him to say that she is going into labor. Unfortunately, he cannot leave work and misses a chance to support her. Anyhow, Chili walks into Hyena Man’s room and hands him a bag filled with cash. Hyena Man decides to run off with that money. Chili makes a run to get a hold of this criminal. While he manages to catch Hyena Man, he learns that he received fake gold. So, Hyena Man walks out free, yet again, because of a lack of evidence.
Back in their office, Chilli and Shoes’s senior officer, The Brigadier, gets angry at them for not getting the actual gold. She had planned to give a share of it to the General to keep him pleased. She tells them to work with a White man named Van Zyl. Shoes figures they should follow the order since he needs this job to support his family. Chilli, however, does not want to betray his morals. He goes and meets the man who raised him and Shoes. He makes Chili realize the value of Shoes’s friendship with him. So, he eventually agrees to join Van Zyl.
Van Zyl managed to convict several criminals but could not make any arrests in over half a year. He has been trying to catch the Gold Gang, which is notorious due to their Robinhood-like reputation – stealing gold and giving it to the needy. Since Chili and Shoes know details about Black gangs that Van Zyl’s all-White team does not, they let the two be a part of their team. As a part of their operation, Chili enters a club to meet the Gold Gang. It consists of Seeng, Dimo, and Dikeledi, who are siblings. He is supposed to infiltrate and win their trust.
After their initial chat, a fight breaks out in the club. Chili leaves the club with the gang and lies that he was once a part of the police force but left because of corruption. The siblings trust him and ask to join their following heist. Chilli destroys his clothes that have his tracker and comms to stay in touch with his associates from the force. The gang enters a place with masks on, steals the gold, and escapes with the stolen goods before Shoes and Van Zyl’s team can catch them.
Later on, the siblings introduce Chili to their mother. She melts the gold they stole into coins so that people can make use of it. They do this thing as a way to carry forward his father’s mission, who died fighting against a dictator from Lesotho who stole gold from the people. That’s why the siblings consider themselves activists. They also steal gold from the rich to help the poor. Chili gets impressed by their approach and wants to join their mission to make an impact he could not through his police job.
Because of his faith in the Gold Gang’s intentions behind the heist, Chili asks Shoes to keep the police away from them. In the biggest heist of their lives, the siblings plan to steal gold from Jozi Gold Refinery, where the dictator turns a lot of gold, regularly, into gold bars. While Chili is up for it, he gets angry the moment he learns that they are planning to get the Hyena Man’s help. For the sake of the mission, he decides to make peace with the criminal.
Shoes makes Chili believe that he is supportive, but he uses him to catch the Gold Gang for Van Zyl and the Brigadier. He gathers information about the Gold Gang’s heist to get to impress his superiors. Meanwhile, the Brigadier betrays everyone else to get the gold for herself. She ropes in the Hyena Man to be her informant since she believes she helped him stay out of jail.

After his visit to the refinery, the dictator goes to a hotel. The Gold Gang enters in disguises. The siblings manage to get him, and his guards turn unconscious. Then they dress up Chili as the dictator because of his resemblance. He goes to the refinery to get the gold as the dictator. By that time, Van Zyl and Shoes get a hint of it. But the Brigadier’s men attack Shoes and Van Zyl’s team. They manage to escape with guns, but only after Van Zyl gets shot.
On the other hand, the Brigadier tells her team to go capture the Gold Gang members from the airport, who were planning to flee using the dictator’s plane. But the gang members return to the warehouse and get the dictator’s men to be the target of the police. Meanwhile, the siblings and Chili get away with the stolen gold. Shoes and a bleeding Van Zyl reach to arrest them. However, the gang learns only then that the gold in their possession is fake.
Chili believes that the Hyena Man stole the real gold and betrayed them. He takes Shoes and Van Zyl to the location while the Brigadier keeps following their car. That is where Chili finds the siblings’ mother dead. The Brigadier reaches the spot and gets into a fight with Shoes. Eventually, she winds up heavily injured, whereas Chili gets the Hyena Man killed. While the siblings mourn their mother’s loss, Shoes understands that his childhood friend will not let him arrest the gang. So he hands over the key to the truck with gold in it.
While the gang leaves with the gold, Chili stays back with Shoes. He knows Shoes will need his support once this case gets to court. He keeps one gold bar with him and later gives it to the priest that helped them when they were young. He hopes it will help the priest with financial issues to support other abandoned children.
In the end, Chili gets sent to prison. The Brigadier, who is in the same jail, approaches him to share her plan of prison break with some other women. She asks him to join her. The film ends before he answers her. More than anything, this cliffhanger hints at the makers’ plan to create a sequel for this Netflix action film.
