Istanbul Encyclopedia (Original title: İstanbul Ansiklopedisi, 2025) is a travelogue infused with poignant social commentary, exploring the complexities of identity crisis and culture shock. The series follows the unlikely bond that forms between two young women: Nesrin, a surgeon preparing to move to France, and Zehra, a university student newly arrived in Istanbul from Amasya, steeped in a conservative upbringing.

Their paths cross due to a shared past—Zehra’s mother, Aylin, was once Nesrin’s closest friend, though the two women have been estranged for nearly two decades. As Zehra grapples with the challenges of a new city and the nuances of her identity, Nesrin confronts unresolved relationships and an aching desire to flee her own history. Through themes of cultural dissonance, the longing for belonging, and the tangled threads of family and love, the narrative paints a vivid portrait of Istanbul in all its layered, restless beauty.

Istanbul Encyclopedia (Netflix TV Mini Series, Istanbul Ansiklopedisi – 2025) Episode 1, “A- Alcakdam Slope” Recap:

The episode opens with a description of Alcakdam Slope—a steep, gully-like street at a fire site, with half-stone, half-dirt steps, soon to be a stairway. In the next scene, a suitcase rolls out on a conveyor belt. Meanwhile, Nesrin performs surgery at the hospital as Zehra excitedly captures photos, thrilled to be in Istanbul. Later, they meet for lunch. Since Zehra is new to the city, she’s grateful to stay at Nesrin’s home. Nesrin and Zehra’s mothers were once best friends but haven’t spoken in 19 years. As they talk, Nesrin is surprised Zehra’s mother has allowed Zehra to stay with Nesrin.

However, Zehra reveals she hasn’t told her mother. Since all dorms were full, Zehra lost a semester—her only options were living with a cult or with Nesrin. However, Nesrin finds it odd because Zehra’s grandmother called her, but Zehra convinced her to do so. Nevertheless, Nesrin brings Zehra home. Before bed, Nesrin gives Zehra an ultimatum: to stay, Zehra must tell her mother where she’s living. For now, Zehra promises to talk to her mother the next day.

Why does Zehra decide to go to the party?

The next morning, Nesrin wakes early to see Zehra performing Namaz. While Zehra is excited to be in Istanbul, Nesrin is eager to leave; in a few months, Nesrin is moving to France for work. Still, Nesrin promises to help Zehra find a place before she goes. Later, Zehra heads to college, excited. In class, the professor introduces the book ‘Istanbul Encyclopedia’ and assigns a project on sites that embody two sides that don’t meet but are one. When the student, Harun, arrives late and is quizzed, Zehra helps him. Meanwhile, Nesrin attends her French class.

During introductions, Nesrin tells the class she wants to run away from Istanbul. At college, Zehra and Harun hang out, and he invites Zehra to a party. Although Zehra is unsure, Harun gives the location in case Zehra changes her mind. Later, Zehra visits museums and writes journal entries. Meanwhile, Nesrin has a dinner date with her boyfriend Serdar, who shares the good news that he no longer has cancer. They slow dance, and Serdar surprises her with flight tickets to France. When Zehra returns, she joins them briefly. But when Serdar offers her wine, she declines as she does not consume alcohol. Feeling awkward, Zehra leaves for the party.

Why does Zehra leave Nesrin’s house?

Flight tickets to France trigger Nesrin, prompting her to break up with Serdar. Additionally, Nesrin adds she’s moving to France for work. While Serdar assumes it’s about managing long distance relationship, Nesrin confesses she’s been imagining other men during sex for over a year and insists it must end. At the party, Harun introduces his friends Dodo, Selin, and Pelin, who hope Zehra will join their theatre group. Though Zehra doesn’t drink, she pretends to sip a beer while pouring the liquid when no one is looking. Later, when Harun brings shots, Zehra drinks but soon retches it out forcefully.

Once Harun’s friends leave, he helps Zehra open up. Now, Zehra shares her need for success, fear of homelessness, and desire not to end up like her mother. Then, Harun and Zehra run down the steep (Alcakdam Slope) and take a selfie at the bottom. Outside Nesrin’s home, Harun tries to kiss Zehra, but she pulls away. From above, Nesrin watches them. Later, Nesrin asks Zehra if she’s told her mother about her living conditions. When Nesrin says she can stay only if she talks to her mother, Zehra gets furious, packs her bags, and leaves.

Istanbul Encyclopedia (Netflix TV Mini Series, Istanbul Ansiklopedisi – 2025) Episode 2, “B- Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan Mosque” Recap:

The episode opens with a description of Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan Mosque — it’s between Kabatas and Besiktas, opposite a large country gate, by the clock tower of Dolmabahçe Palace. It is called the Dolmabahçe mosque because of its location. After leaving Nesrin’s house, Zehra tries to board a ferry. However, the ferries have stopped running. With no other choice, Zehra stays the night at a motel. That night, Nesrin’s sister Emel is loud and chaotic outside her house. The reason is that Emel is drunk.  Later, Nesrin looks after a drunk Emel. It seems like Nesrin’s mother has a memory issue, so Nesrin reminds her that she has two daughters, Nesrin and Emel. The next morning, Nesrin tries to contact Zehra, but Zehra ignores her.

At college, Zehra convinces the security guard to hold her luggage until class ends. Afterward, Zehra asks Harun to wait outside so she can pray. In the prayer room, Zehra meets a friendly girl, Fathima, but Zehra gives her a fake name. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Serdar annoys Nesrin by blaming his cancer on her supposed infidelity.

However, Nesrin insists she only made dinner plans and never cheated. From Nesrin’s perspective, Serdar is manipulative, though he claims he’s only lied once—about being cancer-free. In truth, Serdar still has cancer but hid it to spare Nesrin from worrying. When nothing is working, Serdar tries to cut himself. Instead of stopping Serdar, Nesrin encourages him. The encouragement stopped Serdar from cutting himself.

Why is Nesrin struggling emotionally?

At college, Zehra is in the theatre group. Their coach, Cihan, asks everyone to share personal stories weekly. Later, Selin and Pelin apply makeup to an uncomfortable Zehra. Meanwhile, Nesrin grows close to her French teacher, Louis, who wants more from the relationship, but Nesrin prefers to take it slow. Later, Nesrin visits Zehra’s college. Spotting Nesrin, Zehra hides her luggage in a storage room. By then, Nesrin talks to Harun. In front of Harun, Nesrin and Zehra speak in code, hinting that Nesrin wants Zehra to return home. Later, Zehra and Harun take a ferry. Seeing seaside mansions, Zehra grows upset as everyone should enjoy the sea. Elsewhere, Nesrin returns home but cannot find her mother.

Nesrin runs around the neighborhood and finds her mother on a bridge. Crying on her lap, Nesrin says everyone is lost or trapped, like Zehra and herself. Meanwhile, Zehra rushes to pray at a bowling alley, ensuring no one realizes what she is doing. In the washroom, Zehra removes her nail polish and makeup before praying. Outside, Harun waits, but Zehra stops when they’re about to kiss, still uncomfortable. Later, Nesrin confronts Emel, triggering Emel to compare Nesrin to their absent father. That night, Zehra takes refuge in a mosque, tearfully speaking to Allah about never fitting in. Meanwhile, Nesrin cries at home. By the end, Zehra admits she’s hungry and smelly.

While searching, Nesrin gets a call from Mr. Bekir—Nesrin must give her fingerprints and attend an interview before moving to France.

Elsewhere, Zehra applies for a mid-semester scholarship, usually not accepted, but her application is considered due to respect for Nesrin. At the office, Nesrin explains her desire to escape Istanbul permanently, leaving the officer stunned. Later, Zehra hangs out with friends; Harun, noticing Zehra feels lost, comforts her and the group with pizza. In drama class, Cihan encourages body movements to express emotions. Today, it’s Selin’s turn to share her story.

Will Zehra go back to Nesrin?

Selin begins her story by recalling a childhood trip to Hamburg. In her 20 years, Selin’s witnessed the dollar’s rise. At a café in Hamburg, Selin sees a mother-daughter duo and resents their carefree, white European life. Meanwhile, after the session, Zehra finds her suitcase ransacked. Elsewhere, Nesrin enlists Serdar’s help to put up missing posters for Diego, though she feels guilty given their past.

Still, Nesrin asks for help locating Zehra. Upset, Zehra sits on the campus where Fatima approaches with desserts and an invitation to a meeting. However, Zehra declines, but later, with nowhere else to go, Zehra visits the Faith Society. Thanks to Serdar, Nesrin finds the place too. There, Fatima denies knowing Zehra, realizing later that Zehra used a fake name. Eventually, Nesrin is let in. After dinner, Nesrin and Zehra argue. Finally, Zehra reveals that Aylin knew Zehra’s whereabouts—she only lied because of Nesrin’s hate toward Aylin.

Furthermore, Zehra accuses Nesrin of judging people, especially those with a hijab, as they are not modern. Despite everything, Nesrin says all these accusations are baseless, as Nesrin has done things for Zehra that she would not do for anyone else. Additionally, Zehra adds that she was trying to run away from orthodox life, so it isn’t her first choice to live with the Faith Society. Finally, Nesrin breaks down and asks Zehra to come back home. In the next scene, Zehra considers herself a crustacean, occupying very little space. At this point, Zehra requires only the space of a suitcase. Right now, Zehra is not just moving in the city streets but embodying it as she feels trapped and unable to escape. Thinking of these things, Zehra sleeps inside the Faith Society building on Carsanba Street.

Istanbul Encyclopedia (Netflix TV Mini Series, Istanbul Ansiklopedisi – 2025) Episode 4, “D- Deniz Hospital” Recap:

The episode opens with a description of Deniz Hospital—formerly Sakizagaci and Kasimpasa Naval Hospitals, now Istanbul Naval Hospital—a proud institution of Turkey and its army. At night, Nesrin cleans her house. The next day, Zehra feels overwhelmed by Istanbul’s crowds. To comfort Zehra, Harun blends into the crowd. Later, at Harun’s home, Zehra reflects on olden times when people wrote letters and feelings often faded when they were read. To recreate that, Harun suggests they pick a date to email each other about their feelings on this day. In the heat of the moment, Zehra kisses Harun. They now make out, but it is interrupted by Harun’s mother’s arrival.

The next day, Zehra and Harun fight as Harun feels Zehra is hiding something. Furthermore, Harun asks Zehra to escape her orthodox upbringing and make decisions for herself. Elsewhere, Emel and Nesrin meet a bank manager as they need to pay off their debts immediately. Otherwise, their mother’s house would be sold. Outside the office, Nesrin and Emel fight because of Emel’s debts. Even though Emel wants to sell the house, Nesrin is against it. In the drama class, Dodo shares his story. As a kid, Dodo worked to earn and save money while other kids went on vacation. A while later, as Dodo continued to work, his friend invested in cryptocurrency. As a last resort, Dodo invested everything he had. At that time, the currency’s value fell, leaving Dodo bankrupt.

How do Zehra’s actions defame Nesrin?

At college, Zehra argues with Selin and Pelin as they judge the orthodox girls from the Faith Society. Later, Zehra apologizes to them, saying she has been on edge because of a fight with Harun. To take their minds off things, Zehra suggests they go to a tattoo parlor. While Pelin and Selin get tattoos, reluctantly, Zehra gets a belly piercing.

At the hospital, Harun’s father’s (Osman) reports are fine, although Nesrin suggests getting an EKG. When Harun mentions Zehra, Nesrin tries hard to keep a straight face. After that, Harun asks Zehra to meet. There, Harun tells Zehra that he is always there for her. Harun says this because he realizes Zehra and Nesrin are not on talking terms.

As they goof around, Harun’s mother calls Harun to the hospital—Osman is having a heart attack. At the hospital, Zehra tries to cheer Harun up by making a video. However, Harun’s mother blames Nesrin, and Nesrin raises her voice in defense. It’s all recorded on the phone. Hearing the screams, Zehra drops the phone, runs home, and asks Aylin to pray. The video goes viral, defaming Nesrin. According to Zehra, Istanbul is so cruel that it makes even the sea sick. While Zehra rushes to apologize, Nesrin goes go-karting to cope. Later, Zehra hugs Nesrin, owning up to the video and apologizing sincerely.

The episode opens with a description of Emek Movie Theatre— Emek Cinema at Istiklal Avenue and Yesilcam Street. Built in 1957 on the old Emek cinema site, with Kucuk Emek Cinema by Emek Cinema LLC. The pension fund owns 99%, and Kemal Erbas owns 1%. It opened on April 19, 1958. Currently, Nesrin lets Zehra stay in her house. The video is all over the news. The next morning, Zehra makes breakfast for Nesrin, and they talk. Now, Zehra explains everything that happened at the hospital the previous day. The Chief physician checks Nesrin’s diagnosis for Osman. Although a CT scan could have been done, Nesrin explains that Osman was not showing any alarming symptoms. Now, the chief physician asks Nesrin to be on the prosecutor’s good side.

At college, Harun breaks down, saying the hospital asked the family to bid farewell as they didn’t have hope of Osman’s survival. However, Osman started responding well that morning and is in the ICU. Now Zehra brings up the video, and Harun says he had sent it to a family group, and one of his cousins had uploaded it. Even though Zehra begs Harun to take it down and withdraw the complaint, Harun disagrees as he thinks Nesrin is at fault. In the drama class, Pelin recalls someone making her realize she has a co-dependent relationship with her mother. When Pelin started to observe the world around her, she realized that most people have co-dependent relationships.

Will Harun agree to take down the viral video?

Later, Pelin and Selin console Zehra, promising Harun will be fine once Osman improves. At the lawyer’s office, Nesrin learns Serdar is her prosecutor. Despite their history, Serdar is hard while questioning Nesrin. Because Serdar knows Nesrin will leave the country, he wants to ensure Nesrin is not at flight risk. At college, Fatima judges Zehra for hanging out with Pelin and Selin. It almost seems like Fatima knows Zehra’s life will be bad if she follows the others and leaves the orthodox way of practicing faith. Now, Zehra meets Harun on the pretense of wishing Osman well. There, Zehra asks about the video, and Harun wonders what would have happened if Osman died. No matter what, Zehra says she would have stood by Harun as she loves him. Still, Harun is shaken, so Zehra hugs him.

Meanwhile, Nesrin spends time with Louis, who confesses he loves Nesrin. Later, Nesrin and Zehra hang out. Suddenly, a man collapses, so Nesrin comes to his rescue. Later, Zehra and Nesrin go to the Emek theatre to watch a film. Briefly, Zehra steps out to take Aylin’s call. When Nesrin does not question Zehra, she wonders if Nesrin does not want to know. However, Nesrin says she always knew about it. The irony of living in Turkey was that both women who wear hijab and those who don’t are judged. When Aylin calls, Zehra tells Aylin that Nesrin is driving her home.

Once they reach home, Aylin ignores Nesrin, so Zehra urges Aylin to talk. Later, Zehra pulls a cigarette pack from the wall and meets her ex, Omer, to give it to him. Since Zehra left without saying goodbye, Omer is upset. Moreover, Zehra wants closure. When Omer criticizes her for removing her hijab in Istanbul, she challenges him to smoke in public. Then, Zehra lights a cigarette to provoke Omer, proving he can’t be himself either. Finally, alone at home, Nesrin forces Aylin to confront the past and release Aylin’s emotions.

What happened between Nesrin and Aylin?

According to Aylin, Nesrin betrayed her by leaving for Istanbul without her. However, Nesrin never included Aylin in that plan. When Aylin visited, Nesrin was busy with exams and couldn’t make time. However, Nesrin claims she urged Aylin to come, but Aylin didn’t try hard enough and chose an easier life. When Aylin married, Nesrin was told only three days before. Suddenly, Aylin started to wear a hijab, leaving behind her old life. Although Nesrin sees Aylin’s life as miserable, Aylin disagrees. Regardless, Aylin found Allah; Nesrin, unfortunately, mastered the art of escape.

First, it was Amasya, and now France—Nesrin needs to introspect and see what she’s running from. Later, Nesrin and Zehra talk; Zehra is now doing what Nesrin once did. However, Nesrin admits she was never happy, and Istanbul didn’t help. Soon, they learn Zehra’s grandmother has died. After the funeral, Nesrin tells Aylin she’ll return in a day or two and urges Aylin to come to Istanbul, but Aylin declines. On the day of departure, Zehra decides to go with Nesrin. Istanbul Encyclopedia (Netflix TV Mini Series, Istanbul Ansiklopedisi – 2025) Episode 7, “G- Galata” Recap:

The episode opens with a description of Galata— Galata dock’s shanties, theatres, and taverns. Ahmed Rasim describes the Galata dock in “City Letters,” which he wrote for the Malumat Gazette: “The docks provided a nice view, but the shanties built along it are very inappropriate.” In Istanbul, Zehra has not left Nesrin’s house for a week, so Nesrin urges Zehra to return to school. After that, Nesrin picks up her camera and meets her chief physician. Now, Nesrin has quit her job. Before leaving home, Zehra puts on a beanie as she figures out if she wants to be a hijabi woman or not.

In the drama class, Harun tells his story. Before Harun was born, his parents were not wealthy, and they considered getting an abortion. One day, Harun’s mother decides to go through with the abortion, and that night, she has a dream of a baby amidst the fire. Without thinking, Harun’s mother saves the child. After that dream, Harun’s mother calls in a midwife and gives birth to Harun.

Unfortunately, Harun is not breathing. Luckily, Harun pees and comes back to life. Later, Zehra applies for a part-time job in a clothing store, but her ID has expired. When Zehra goes to a photo studio, she struggles as she is unsure if she wants a photo with a hijab or not. So, Zehra gets a picture with and without a hijab. The real problem occurs in the office when the employee asks for a photograph so they can make Zehra’s ID.

What happens in the tavern?

Meanwhile, Nesrin had a fun-filled day with Louis, and it is surprising to see a carefree Nesrin. When Nesrin mentions she quit her job, Louis becomes upset. Somehow, Louis blames Nesrin for getting intimate with him, even though Louis always knew Nesrin would leave Istanbul. As soon as Nesrin gets home, Zehra cries, saying she does not have an identity. So Nesrin says she quit her job, and Zehra is the reason. Even though Zehra feels lost, she goes ahead to get what she wants, inspiring Nesrin. So Nesrin gives Zehra her clothes and a wig to help Zehra find her identity. Later, Nesrin takes Zehra to a tavern. They both have an interesting conversation about architecture. A band starts playing, and Zehra and Nesrin sing with them.

Istanbul Encyclopedia (Netflix TV Mini Series, Istanbul Ansiklopedisi – 2025) Episode 8, “Last Letter” Recap:

The episode opens with Zehra, Harun, Pelin, Selin, and Dodo playing a game of truth or dare by the sea. It is Zehra’s turn, and the group asks her to jump into the sea. When Zehra is reluctant, the group troubles her. In anger, Zehra jumps into the sea. Meanwhile, Nesrin gives her French exam. The exam is conducted by Louis. Elsewhere, Zehra does not have any luck finding a dorm. It’s time for a trial performance, and Zehra is ready to tell her story. Surprisingly, Zehra is not angry with her friends for what happened the previous day.

On stage, Zehra pours her heart out, talking about her dual personality. There are times when Zehra wants to wear the hijab, not because someone forced her to, but just because of her past experiences. On the other hand, when Zehra came to Istanbul, she wanted to hide this side of herself so she would not get labeled for being a devout Muslim. This way, Zehra is always stuck between two opposite things, unable to choose between the two. It feels suffocating to Zehra to be ambivalent. After the performance, Cihan tells Zehra not to go off-script, as Harun had to share the stage with Zehra in the next scene, and he didn’t know what to do because Zehra was wearing a hijab.

The group now gets into a debate about how everyone prejudices everyone. When the topic turns to practicing faith, Cihan stops them and asks the group to maintain consistency during practice. Once everyone leaves, jokingly, Harun calls Zehra a strange person. At home, Zehra and Nesrin sing and dance. The next day, Nesrin visits her mother’s house as it is being sold. For the first time, Nesrin apologizes to Emel and makes amends with Emel. Now, Zehra finds Diego under a stranger’s car.

Istanbul Encyclopedia (Netflix TV Mini Series, Istanbul Ansiklopedisi – 2025) Ending Explained:

At home, Nesrin gets the news that she has passed the French exam with good scores. So, Nesrin asks Zehra to care for Diego as the cat can’t travel. However, Zehra is unsure, but Nesrin says she won’t sell her house if Zehra takes care of Diego. This means Zehra can stay in Nesrin’s house. Zehra is thrilled as she has no other place to live. In class, Zehra talks about Nesrin’s house. There have been many people Zehra has met and learned from. Starting with Diego, who is a wise cat. Next, Harun, who is filled with enthusiasm. On the day Zehra jumped into the sea, Zehra and Harun received their respective emails. However, Zehra does not reveal what Harun wrote, but Zehra wrote to Harun that he turned Istanbul into a galactic voyage for Zehra.

Then, Serdar had a lot of emotions suppressed, ready to burst any moment. In contrast, Emel is full of life. The complexities of Emel’s emotions are reflected in Emel’s body. Lastly, Nesrin who is Zehra’s hero. At first, Zehra didn’t know if exhaustion was something etched into Nesrin’s face or if it was temporary. Still, Nesrin had hope mixed with weariness.

Later, Nesrin gives Zehra a haircut that is similar to Nesrin’s. Now, Nesrin and Zehra are driving to the airport. In the car, Zehra gives her personal Istanbul Encyclopedia to Nesrin so she can remember her version of Istanbul, and Nesrin gives Zehra a photo of Nesrin’s version of Istanbul. At the airport, they cry, unable to let go of each other. Before leaving, Nesrin thanks Zehra for coming into her life. After Nesrin leaves, Aylin arrives, shocked to see Zehra looking like a mini Nesrin. In the end, Zehra says she seems like Aylin as well.

What began as two people, Zehra and Nesrin, coming from different worlds, could not see eye-to-eye about most things, and in the end, became inseparable. Until the end, Zehra has not picked a path to walk on, but it seems like Zehra is the best of both worlds. Zehra knows when to be like a modern Nesrin and when to stick to her roots. Many interesting topics were represented in the series, from culture shock, identity crisis, navigating different/complex relationships, and what it means to practice or not practice a religion.

The ending seems abrupt as Aylin is shocked to see Zehra look like Nesrin. The story ends there. It is either a hint at another season or left open to interpretation. Even though the premise began with Nesrin and Aylin’s estranged relationship, the issue was not resolved. Maybe because Zehra, Nesrin, and Aylin may start talking to each other again. This will be explored if there is another season.
