Every actor from the Pirates franchise left an indelible mark on the viewers, but when talking specifically about that one character who became the brand for the franchise, Johnny Depp’s name immediately comes to mind. With his incredible performance as Jack Sparrow, he has significantly contributed to the film franchise. Being consistent with his incredible performance for five consecutive installments of the film, Depp made a special place in fans’ hearts, and it’s indeed hard to imagine anyone else in his place. However, during his controversial trial with his ex-wife Amber Heard, he was dropped from the franchise. Now rumors are swirling on the internet that he has been replaced by a new actress in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film.
Who has replaced Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean?
For all the “Pirates of the Caribbean” fans and Depp devotees, there is some unfortunate news, as the actor may not reprise his role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth installment of the film. According to reports, Depp might be replaced by Ayo Edebiri in the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” film. Reportedly, Edebiri will play the role of Anna. The character is based on the life of Anne Bonny, a 17th-century female pirate.
Edebiri is an American actress, comedian, and television writer. She is popularly known for the role of chef Sydney Adamu in the comedy-drama series “The Bear” since 2022. She also won the Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award for her role.
Johnny Depp fans are outraged by the news
This news was recently announced by an X (formerly Twitter) news handle named Unlimited L’s. It suggested that “Disney is reportedly considering Ayo Edebiri for the leading role in “Pirates 6,” a film that would feature a younger cast of pirates in search of hidden treasure.”

The news didn’t settle well with the social media users, as they were outraged to learn that Depp won’t be reprising his role. Even Tesla owner Elon Musk showed his disappointment with the news. He retweeted the post, writing, “Disney sucks.”
It’s not just that Depp’s replacement has affected the fans, but they are also not content with the rumored casting of the film. According to fans, Bonny was a pale-skinned, red-haired Irish woman, and casting Edebiri as Bonny, won’t do justice to the character as Edebiri is from Nigerian lineage. Some fans have also accused Disney of “blackwashing” (casting black people in historical characters who are Caucasian).
An X user wrote, “@Disney really has a low opinion of black people. They constantly cast them to play the roles of white historical figures, and the only black nation they decided to make a movie about didn’t actually exist. I called it the Wakanda policy”.
Another user emphasized, “Anne Bonny was a fabulous Irishwoman. A historical figure many Irish love. It would be wrong to cast a non-Irish woman in this role! Well, yet another “go woke, go broke” Previously, the character of Bonny was played by Mia Tomlinson in the 2021 Netflix docuseries “The Lost Pirate Kingdom.”
