Over the years, the cinematic world has witnessed many iconic duos of actors and directors whose partnership blesses the big screen. One such talented actor-director duo is Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, whose collaboration has led to films like The Favourite and Poor Things. The films were not only box office hits but also garnered various awards and nominations. Now, the two have once again collaborated on the upcoming dark comedy film “Kinds of Kindness.” “Kinds of Kindness” is set to release next weekend, raising the big question: can the charm of Lanthimos and Stone create a hat-trick with success at the box office of their third collaboration?

Can Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone create the same magic at the box office with Kinds of Kindness?

If Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s names are attached to the project, it’s obvious to assume that something exciting is on the way. The distributing partner of the film, Searchlight Pictures, has wise strategies in place for “Kinds of Kindness.” To create buzz, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where Jesse Plemons won Best Actor for his work in the film.

The film is set for a limited release next weekend, starting in a few key markets to build buzz before expanding nationwide. This strategy contributed to Poor Things’ box-office success, as it grossed $117 million worldwide on a budget of $35 million.

As for “Kinds of Kindness,” it is described as a “triptych fable” consisting of three distinct but loosely connected stories:

“The Death of R.M.F.” follows a man struggling to take charge of his own destiny, following him quitting his powerful job that dictates what he does in a day.

“R.M.F. is Flying” depicts a man plagued by suspicions that his spouse, who has recently returned after being reported missing, is an impostor.

“R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich” revolves around a cultist who, after being kicked out of the said cult for being “contaminated,” vehemently attempts to fulfill her task of finding a specific person with the ability to resurrect the dead.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 6.7/10. The website’s consensus reads: “A cold-hearted triptych with caustic wit, Kinds of Kindness is Yorgos Lanthimos at his most misanthropic — and bitingly funny.”

The film features an ensemble cast that includesย  Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.

“Kinds of Kindness” hits theaters on June 21, 2024.
