Colin Farrell will now be seen portraying the infamous City Gangster in the upcoming Max Limited series, a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ 2022 hit “The Batman.” The streaming platform recently released a new look along with the second trailer for its upcoming DC crime drama, “The Penguin,” which gives a deeper glimpse of the show and teases what can be expected from it. The second trailer of “The Penguin” depicts the scenes that are picked right after the events at the end of The Batman.

What can be expected from the upcoming DC crime drama?

The upcoming DC crime drama The Penguin focuses on the story of Gotham City’s infamous villain. Created by Lauren LeFranc, the limited series is based on the DC Comics character Penguin. It is a spin-off from the film “The Batman” (2022) that explores the Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.

In the original Batman movie, The Penguin was a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone, who met an untimely end. Meanwhile, in the series, The Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City.

The eight-episode series, which first went into development in September 2021 and is a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” a $772 million-grossing blockbuster in 2022, will finally premiere this September. LeFranc is attached as a writer.

The series also features Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar), Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Deirdre O’Connell (Francis Cobb), Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni), James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Karlo), and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush). The series is produced by 6th & Idaho, DC Studios, and Dylan Clark Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with LeFranc serving as showrunner. Daniel Pipski, Reeves, Dylan Clark, and Colin Farrell also serve as executive producers.

Reeves’ Batman is part of a separate DC universe that exists alongside another new DC universe created by Peter Safran and James Gunn. Safran and Gunn’s new DC universe is called “Gods and Monsters,” and it will start with a Superman movie coming out on July 11, 2025.

Reeves is also making a sequel to his Batman movie, which will be released in theaters on October 2, 2026. At the same time, Safran and Gunn are planning their own Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti. This movie will feature Bruce Wayne and his rebellious son, Damien Wayne, who becomes Robin.

So, there will be two different Batman stories happening in different universes: one by Reeves and another by Safran and Gunn.
