In Darrell Roodt’s sci-fi action thriller “Lake Placid: Legacy” (2018), a band of thrill-seeking activists led by Jade (Katherine Barrell) and Sam (Tim Rozon) specialize in exposing corruption, no matter the danger. Their latest target: a secluded area rumored to hold a dark secret. But when they trespass, they encounter a monstrous threat, unlike anything they could have anticipated. Is This Just Another Thrill Ride, or Something More?
“Lake Placid: Legacy” opens with Jade in an interview with her journalist sister Alice. She seeks to preserve the memory of her final adventure with Sam, Billy, and Spencer. The interview takes place in the garage, where they are planning to place a huge flag on the top of a building owned by a corrupt company. These activists are about to put up the flag without worrying about getting caught. It’s a close encounter, but the team eventually succeeds in putting the flag up, which becomes global news soon after.
They work anonymously, and this is their last scoop together. Alice later realizes that there is a secret competition going on between different activist groups where they genuinely rank their success. Their group has topped 32 times, including the recent flag operation. But just like all good things come to an end, Jade has decided to finally do something rather than taking activism as an adventure sport. Her boyfriend Sam appreciates her decision. However, Spencer still wants them to continue so that they do not have to stop doing such impulsive things.
What Makes Sam Decide to Go to Lake Placid?
Sam’s old friend Dane shares a video message saying that he has heard that Sam has decided to leave the work because Jade has decided to move on. Dane is not liked by the whole crew. Though he used to be a part of the same team, now he has removed himself and has gone on a different route with his own team. Anyway, Dane gives Sam a reason to continue his work for one last time as he challenges him to come to a place. If he achieves it, he can even earn 100 grand. Dane says that this is a private investor who wants to know the real truth behind the place, and Dane is already up for it.
Dan and Sam already have their own fallout, and Sam loves to do this thing. It is obvious that since they have come from recent success, an opportunity like this will definitely intrigue him to take it. That, too, if they succeed, there is a lot of money waiting for them. Spencer is already in, while Jade tries to stop Sam from taking any decision. Billy, being the tech-savvy one in the group, says that they do not know anything about the location, so they should think carefully. But Sam decides to take the task as the last mission of the crew.
What do Sam and his team Find Out about Dane?
The group sets off to the island by boat, accompanied by rangers Pennie and Travis. Pennie tells the group repeatedly that they should rethink because the place is off-limits for the common people. Sam gives an example of Area 51, saying that these are off-limits because the government conducts its nasty business there. Anyway, when they reach the gates, Pennie’s speculation that the place is radioactive turns out to be wrong. Spencer cuts the chains of the gate as the whole team enters the restricted area.
They begin their exploration. Soon, they come across a place where they find Dane’s action camera. Billy connects the camera to his phone and finds out that they have been lured into the place by a man named Henderson. In another clip, they see Dane running away from something, knowing that he can never leave the place. Soon after, they find Dane’s friend, Gomez, hanging in a tree, with the lower part of the body missing. Until now, Spencer thought that this was all planned by Dane to catch them by surprise. But when they see the body, Sam asks the group to leave the island immediately.
What happens to Pennie and Travis?
The team asks Pennie and Travis to start the boat immediately. But their boat drifts onto the lake with Travis on board. Suddenly, Pennie is pulled into the water by a rope attached to the boat as the group sees something coming toward the boat. They all call Travis to make him jump from the boat. Right after he jumps, the boat is mysteriously destroyed by something big. Soon after, Travis is taken inside the water. There is blood all around. Sam has already jumped into the water to rescue Pennie. Fortunately, he is able to save her.
Pennie is left with a broken leg when Spencer tells Sam that they can not escape with her because she will only slow them down. Everyone is furious by Spencer’s comment. Pennie brings out her gun, pointing at Spencer. Sam tries to make her realize that they will not leave anyone behind, but for that, they need to stay together without picking fights with one another. Sam and Jade take care of Pennie’s leg as they start looking for shelter. In the video, Dane is told about an entrance where some weapons can be found. They start looking for it.
What do they find inside the Facility?
While searching for the entrance, the team ends up inside a mysterious facility, seeking refuge. To survive, they are required to go to a different sector of the building using a rope. Out of nowhere, a massive 50-foot crocodile comes at them. Jade, Sam, and Alice make it to the other end of the sector while Billy, Spencer, and Pennie stay in the sector where the crocodile is seen. Pennie tries to shoot at the creature.
As Jade, Sam, and Alice cautiously explore the facility, trying to find a way out, Billy makes his way down to a dock, desperately searching for a radio to interact with the police. He manages to connect briefly but quickly loses the signal, leaving them without outside help. Jade learns that this facility is owned by Pharmetta Corp, one of the most corrupt companies in the world. They find out that they were doing some research, perhaps not officially sanctioned by the government, and think that they have perhaps made the monster out there just like Frankenstein. Amidst the tension, the situation takes a deadly turn when Spencer is suddenly attacked by the crocodile and killed in an instant.
Determined to protect Billy and the other group members, Pennie decides to stay behind and confront the monstrous crocodile herself. She asks Billy to find Jade, Sam, and Alice so that they can leave the island in any way possible. Billy goes to find a way to locate them as Pennie faces the creature, leading it into a narrow tunnel. However, her bravery is met with tragedy as the crocodile kills her. The remaining members hear Pennie scream in horror.
Secret Experiments Gone Wrong? – Dane Reveals a Shocking Discovery at the Facility
Dane reveals that he was asked by Henderson to come inside the facility, and he only wanted to make sure that Sam and his team saw what he saw. However, Dane never realized that things would take such a heinous turn overnight as Henderson did not tell him everything about the place before coming in. However, he brings Sam and others to Henderson, who is being tied up by Dane. Henderson promises Sam that he will tell them everything once he is released. Sam does so, and Henderson starts to share the history of the facility.
Henderson was a Pharmetta Corp employee when the company was involved in a secret experiment to weaponize crocodiles. The main objective was to find a cure for the disease, or so they thought. Ultimately, when the program was shut down, one of the vets took a young crocodile to Black Lake in Maine. Later, the crocodile takes a huge shape, surely killing the vet. Then, it starts roaming around this lake and its surrounding areas, especially inside the facility. Henderson is required to collect the DNA sample of the creature, so he introduces Dane and Gomez to the facility, using them to gain access and continue his experiments.
Can They Escape the Rising Flood and the Crocodile’s Jaws?
While this unfolds, Billy reaches another building and successfully contacts the other survivors. However, his success is short-lived as the crocodile breaks in and kills him. Amid the chaos, Henderson seizes the opportunity to escape. Jade, Sam, Alice, and Dane desperately attempt to flee the facility. Henderson, determined to trap them, tries to flood the building. Despite the rising water, the group manages to swim through the flood and escape into another section of the facility. The danger is far from over. But they continue their fight for survival. While talking to Henderson, the team receives a radio call from Billy, who feels that the creature is around. Alice suggests him not to make any movement or noise.
Billy, in such an anxious moment, walks close to the window to see outside whether the creature is there or not. Unfortunately, the crocodile sees him and kills him. Sam, Jade, and Alice now know that they are the only survivors. They need to get out of this facility to stay alive as they start finding a way. Right at this moment, Sam finds out that Henderson has escaped from them, and they start looking for him.

Are Jade and Alice Able to Escape the Lake?
The crocodile soon catches up to the group while they are trying to escape the facility. During that time, the crocodile kills Dane and later kills Henderson as well, who is trying to take a different route to get out of the facility. Henderson tries to neutralize it but eventually ends up dead. Jade, Sam, and Alice finally come across a room filled with gas cylinders. Sam thinks of a plan to kill the crocodile by blowing up the gas cans. He starts releasing the gas and tells Jade and Alice to escape while he stays behind to finish the job.
As the crocodile enters the room, Sam tries to ignite the gas with a flare he found earlier. Unfortunately, the flare does not light up, and the crocodile eats him. Jade and Alice run into the woods, reaching close to the lake when the crocodile comes to confront them. Just when it is about to attack Alice, Jade uses an excavator to trap the crocodile and then showers gasoline over it. Soon after, she throws a lighter at it. The deadly creature is set on fire and starts burning.
At the end of “Lake Placid: Legacy,” we see Jade and Alice swimming back to the mainland. Unbeknownst to them, a second crocodile lurks in the water, following them from behind. There are definitely two crocodiles because while Sam, Jade, and Alice were escaping before, they saw a crocodile waiting for them in the water moments after Dane was killed. It would be absurd to think that a crocodile has traveled such a distance so fast. However, it is unclear whether Alice and Jade successfully escape the lake since another crocodile is on their tail. If they do, well, there will be a sequel.
