The 77th annual Cannes Film Festival is just around the corner, and everything is set—from the movie lineup to the jury. Initially, the news surfaced that Barbie‘s filmmaker, Greta Gerwig, is the jury president. Now, Cannes has picked its complete jury with A-listers like Oscar-nominated actress Lily Gladstone, French stars Eva Green and Omar Sy, and Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino joining Gerwig in the Jury panel. They will be selecting the winners, including the best film, Palme d’Or, from the 2024 competition lineup.
Additionally, the jury will also include a trio of international Oscar-nominated directors: Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki (Capernaum), Spain’s Juan Antonio Bayona (Society of the Snow) and Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu (Shoplifters), as well as Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, co-writer of 2014 Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep (with director husband Nuri Bilge Ceylan).
Movies running for Palme d’Or and Cannes 2024
The films running for this year’s Palme d’Or include Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited film Megalopolis, Yorgos Lanthimos’s directed film Kinds of Kindness; Scottish director Andrea Arnold’s feature Bird; David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds; and Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump drama The Apprentice.
The 2024 Cannes Festival starts on May 14 with French auteur Quentin Dupieux’s directorial feature, The Second Act. It is a surreal comedy film starring Léa Seydoux and Vincent Lindon. The film will premiere out of competition. Another film that will be shown out of competition is George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure film, also it is the fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise, serving as both a spin-off and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character Imperator Furiosa, with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Alyla Browne also starring. Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizons: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will also participate in the Cannes Film Festival.
As for the Cannes selected jury members, which now includes Lily Gladstone, Cannes juries have a strong track record in picking breakout award season contenders. Last year’s Palme winner, Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, went from success on the Croisette all the way to the Oscars, where the French film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and scored a Best Actress nom for breakout star Sandra Hüller.
Anatomy of a Fall is a 2023 French legal drama film starring Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death. Appearing in supporting roles are Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner, Antoine Reinartz, Samuel Theis, Jehnny Beth, Saadia Bentaieb, Camille Rutherford, Anne Rotger, and Sophie Fillières.
The 77th Cannes Film Festival runs May 14-25.
