Netflix’s new South African movie tells the story of four women in their 30s trying to figure out life. They have each other to lean on as they navigate their problems about love, relationships, and aging. This is one of the first films from the African content streaming on the platform in August. But it is a half-baked effort that doesn’t really have a point to it. The highlights of Love, Sex, and 30 Candles come from its reflection on modern society and the unreasonable standards imposed on women. Love, Sex, and 30 Candles (2023) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Dikeledi, Sade, Nolwazi, and Linda are best friends from their college days. Each of the women is in their 30s, bordering on the next phase in their life. But none of them is even remotely close to being in a healthy or consistent relationship. They struggle with clarity about what they should do and what lies next in their lives. The women lean heavily on each other for guidance and support. Dikeledi is a professor at the local university, where she develops a crush on Professor Kwame, who has recently joined the university.
What complicates matters is her long-standing on-off relationship with Tebogo. They have been seeing each other for almost 10 years and have a daughter together, Phemolo, who lives with Dikeledi. There are more complications as Nolwazi had a one-night stand with Tebogo after getting drunk. And now she is pregnant. Nolwazi is a budding fashion designer who wants to have her own fashion brand by the time she turns thirty.

But even though she has made great strides in her career, Nolwazi has yet to crack the code. Tebogo wants nothing to do with Nol’s child and asks her to get an abortion. Moreover, Tebogo asks her not to reveal anything about their affair to Dikeledi. Scared and regretful about his decisions, Tebogo compensates for it by asking Dikeledi to marry him. She gladly accepts but demands that he be a good father and husband to Phemolo and her. Linda lives with her mother, who is divorced and keeps ill. She is suffering from a terminal disease, and Linda must take care of her alone.
She seldom thinks about Enzokuhle, her estranged father. As a result, Linda has deep-rooted commitment issues and recently broke off her engagement with Lehumo. Sade is engaged to Winston, an affluent man passionate about religion and the church. He is the manifestation of orthodox patriarchy and limits Sade in every way. His control extends over what she wears, who she hangs out with, and, astonishingly, even who her bridesmaids will be. Sade is an accomplished auditor at a leading firm but struggles to be an equal partner in their relationship.
Why is Sade afraid to break up her marriage with Winston?
He imposes on her friendship with Palesa, who is the local Pastor’s wife. Sade’s troubles increase when Winston discovers that she is not a virgin. It was one of the prerequisites for him, and it is indicated she told him so. He comes home drunk and humiliated by a former partner of Sade’s at a party in public. Winston strikes her in a rage, but Sade does not break the wedding off. She goes ahead with it, but Winston’s attitude does not change. He wants her to apologize to him and God for her actions. In addition, Winston also asks Sade to leave her job and friends if she wants to sustain their marriage.
Nolwazi is heartbroken by Tebogo’s indifference. With so many troubles in her life, Nol’s dream could not have come true at a worse time. Her recent designs have caught the eye of the public, and Ephery, her boss, asks her to showcase her own range at a prestigious fashion show a few weeks from then. Nol is not able to focus on new designs and struggles for inspiration. Ephery threatens her not to back out of her commitment and go ahead with the show. He advises Nolwazi to find inspiration from the people around her and what they mean to her.
The friends have a falling out at Sade’s marriage when Dikeledi learns about the affair. What compounds her anger is a sense of betrayal from her friends, who knew about the affair but did not bother telling her. Doctors inform Linda that her mother is not receptive to treatment any longer. She is only kept alive through life support. Linda gets some sort of consolation in her father returning. Enzokuhle reveals that he and Sophekazi used to talk to each other every now and then. But he did not have the nerve to reach out to Linda, who was angry at him for deserting his family. They finally make up with each other as Linda decides to switch off the machines.
Love, Sex, and 30 Candles (2023) Netflix Movie Ending Explained:
Sophekazi leaves the world on the same day that Linda was born, i.e., on her birthday. Dilekedi is encouraged by Kwame to give her friends a chance. All long-term friendships are roller-coaster rides and have their ups and downs. She goes to visit Linda as Nol’s fashion show is a hit. All of a sudden, Dilekedi gets a message that Nol has been rushed to the hospital. Something is gravely wrong with her pregnancy. While Linda and Dilekedi reach the hospital, Sade fights with Winston.
He does not want her to go since he does not want her to keep any contact with her unmarried friends. Sade decides to go to the hospital anyway, even if it means the end of their marriage. Nol had to go through a c-section delivery post-pregnancy complications. The chances of her survival are 50-50 at his point. After a few hours, the doctor delivers the news that both Nol and her newborn girl are healthy.
Dilekedi finally apologizes to Nol. All the friends converge around Nol’s bed, rejoicing in the birth of the new baby. Nol decides to name her daughter Sophekazi as an homage to Linda’s mother. When Sade goes back to Winston’s house to pack her things and leave her ring, she is shocked to find Palesa and Winston engaging in intercourse. She even takes a picture to commemorate the day she discovered how “deeply religious” Winston actually was.
Dilekedi has started a new relationship with Kwame. Linda has finally gotten over her fears of commitment by starting a relationship with Kennedy. The movie ends with all four friends gathering again at Linda’s house to celebrate her birthday, reflecting on their tumultuous year.
