My Happy Marriage (Season 1), Episode 4 “The Gift” Recap:
The episode begins with Miyo dreaming about her mother, who begged Shinji to love and protect Miyo, but he blatantly refused to love her as she did not have any supernatural gifts. Miyo’s mother promises that one day she will find joy, and things will turn around. Miyo asks Yurie for help in giving a return gift to Kiyoko. Yurie is delighted to hear this. Yurie forgets about the dirty dishes and gets on the task of helping Miyo find the perfect gift. Miyo is worried as she does not have much money and cannot spend lavishly on him, but Yurie suggests that she should make something for him that he sees or will use daily. Miyo sees the handicrafts book and thinks about what to make for Kiyoko. She decides to make a braided cord.
Miyo asked Kiyoko if leaving the house for a while would be okay as she had to run some errands. He asks her to wait for a few days so he can accompany her. Miyo tells him it is okay, as Yurie will be joining her. Kiyoko asks Miyo to be careful, gives her an amulet, and asks her to take it anywhere she goes. Miyo is grateful and thinks he is lovely for this gesture. Koji is sitting with a frown when he is informed about Kaya’s return home. His older brother teases Koji was always being obedient. Koji retaliates and tells him to behave well as the firstborn, and his brother seals his mouth using supernatural abilities. Koji’s brother laughs it off and unseals his mouth.
Yurie and Miyo go shopping for threads to braid a cord for Kiyoko. Miyo finds what she likes, and Yurie asks her to wait as she needs to buy some salt as they have run out of it. While she waits, Kaya comes before her, and Miyo is terrified. Kiyoko visits Shinji and discusses getting married to Miyo. He also tells him that for families like them who are powerful, marriages are usually treated like a business, and he did not intend to do any such things as he knew all about the way Miyo was treated from her childhood. Kaya verbally torments her sister by saying awful things about Miyo’s life. Koji insists on leaving her alone, but Kaya enjoys tormenting her. At home, Kiyoko puts a condition on Shinji by saying he can give dowry, but he should sincerely apologize to Miyo face-to-face. He also tells him that he did not intend to force him to do it if he didn’t want to, but if he did not, he would be cutting ties with his family right away.
Kaya tells her sister to ask her for money if needed, but she would give her money if she begged on the street. Miyo is about to apologize, but Yurie asks if they are her friends. Kaya introduces herself and asks if Yurie is Miyo’s colleague. Yurie informs her that Miyo will be Kiyoko’s wife; hence, she is the lady of the house and works as a servant there. Kaya says that rumors must not be trusted, and Yurie takes Miyo away. Kaya is upset knowing how Miyo is living. Shinji asks for time to think about this apology, but Kiyoko says she can think about it, but he wouldn’t wait too long for his answer.

Yurie can sense that Miyo is upset. Miyo hates herself for being the way she is. Kaya and Koji go back home, and she sees Kiyoko walking past her and thinks he is beautiful. Kiyoko returns home and is worried if Miyo is doing okay. Miyo tells him not to worry about her. Yurie informs Kiyoko about what has happened. Kiyoko reaches out to Miyo and tells her that he will always be there for her if she ever wants to talk about how she feels. Miyo feels sorry. Yurie suggests to Kiyoko to show Miyo love. She asks him to be honest and sincere with her so she feels confident, and the rest is up to Miyo after that. Kiyoko writes a letter to someone, and Miyo finishes the braided cord. Miyo does not know how to present the gift to him. Yurie asks if she can come inside her room, and Miyo agrees. As the door opens, Miyo sees Hana and feels emotional.
Hana and Miyo have a conversation, and Hana asks Miyo if she is happy, as that is the only thing she wants. Miyo breaks down and tells her she was not, as she did not think she deserved to be Kiyoko’s wife because she did not possess the gift. Hana shows Miyo the letter and tells her that he had sent it to her only for her and that he knew about her situation. Miyo breaks down because she assumes a lot of things about Kiyoko. Hana tells her to have courage, and Miyo thanks her. Miyo gathers courage, tells Kiyoko the truth, and gifts him the braided cord. She also tells him that she will be ready to do whatever he decides. Kiyoko goes close to her and tells her that he wants to make their engagement official and wants her to live with him. He hugs her and asks her if she doesn’t want to live with him. Miyo says she would like to live with him if he allows her to.
