Not Dead Yet (Season 1), Episode 6: The most recent episode seemed to shift the focus away from Nell and toward the supporting characters. It provides a deeper exploration of Lexi’s character, who found happiness in being called Karen at work. Sam, who typically remains level-headed in difficult situations, seems to unravel. Meanwhile, Nell’s character is further developed as she struggles with feelings of jealousy when she has to share her best friend with others.

The episode emphasizes the importance of being there for one another and practicing kindness, as well as the significance of sharing as we navigate through the complexities of life.

Not Dead Yet (Season 1), Episode 6 Recap:

In Episode 6 of Season 1 of “Not Dead Yet,” we follow Nell as she begins another day. She starts her day by talking to deceased individuals, and at times, she finds herself coming up with peculiar explanations to give others when they catch her conversing with herself.

Meanwhile, Sam is thrilled to be in charge of the upcoming wine festival, and as the section editor of the newspaper, she must oversee every minute detail of the event. As Nell and Sam reminisce about their early days as junior writers, they arrive at Lexi’s office only to find her overly enthusiastic about the festival.

From previous episodes, we’ve come to understand that Lexi always seeks her father’s approval above all else. In this instance, she has organized the festival, hoping that her father would come to the office and see how well she’s managing the newspaper.

Unfortunately, her father doesn’t recognize her efforts and is continually critical of her. Nevertheless, Lexi is determined to make everything flawless for her father. During Nell’s absence in London, Sam and Lexi develop a close bond with each other. As a result, Lexi now looks to Sam for guidance whenever she’s faced with difficult situations.

During Nell and Sam’s visit to Lexi’s office, she enthusiastically shares her plans for the upcoming festival. However, Lexi seems to completely disregard Nell’s presence and invites Sam over for dinner at her place to express her gratitude for Sam’s help with the event. Sam requests a rain check for their plans to meet up at Cricket’s bar that night. Meanwhile, Nell suggests that Sam could ask Cricket to set up a wine booth at the festival.

Nell receives another obituary assignment from Dennis, this time about Terri Lawrence, known as the puppet lady from the 80s. After Dennis departs, Terri and Ham Hock appear, claiming to be her friends and greeting her warmly. Later on, at Cricket’s Bar, Nell asks Cricket if she would be interested in participating in the wine festival. Cricket explains that she used to do wine festivals with Monty, but since his passing, she hasn’t considered it. Nell offers to help, but she admits that she doesn’t know much about wine.

Edward gained knowledge about wine when he began dating his long-distance girlfriend. He created a list of things that a man should learn to impress his partner, and studying wine was one of them. As a result, Cricket is pleased to have him as a partner to join her at the festival and host a wine booth together.

The next day, Dennis arrives at the event with an empty stomach, eager to enjoy all of the food and wine available. He and his partner have been following a healthy diet to increase their chances of being approved as sperm donors in the hopes of starting a family. Meanwhile, Lexi announces to everyone that her father will be attending the festival to see how well they are promoting their business.

The news of Lexi’s father attending the festival only intensifies her anxiety, causing her to fidget and obsess over details. Sam tries to soothe her, but Lexi becomes increasingly restless and starts bombarding her with new ideas to make the event even more successful.

Lexi makes last-minute changes, such as canceling the jazz bands and replacing them with bagpipers, which her father apparently prefers. She also moves the event by two hours to fit her father’s schedule. Dennis jokes that Sam is now in trouble with all the new changes. Nell observes everything and reminds Sam that dumping last-minute changes on her is not acceptable, but Sam remains calm and says it’s all part of dealing with Lexi’s stress.

Nell is fiercely protective of her friend, but Sam handles the situation with maturity and encourages Nell to try to befriend Lexi. Though Nell is uncertain, the ghost of Terri Lawrence appears and reminds her that having multiple friends doesn’t mean they can’t all be friends.

On the day of the event, despite Lexi’s last-minute changes and demands, Sam is pleased with how well everything is going. However, Lexi approaches her and asks about the Kilts Akimbo’s performance time, contradicting what she had said earlier about her father’s dislike of dancing. Additionally, Lexi has ordered a massive truck to impress her father, which causes space issues at the event. Sam stays calm despite these challenges, thanks to Nell’s encouragement and positive reinforcement of her personality.

Nell believes that she is Sam’s true best friend and that Lexi is insensitive. However, Terri and her puppet point out that it is not right to be mean to someone’s friend and that Nell’s attitude will not lead her down the right path. Nell ignores this advice and continues to do what she feels like doing. Meanwhile, Edward and Cricket bond over their shared experiences of loss, using humor and a “widow game” to connect with festival-goers.

Lexi becomes angry with Sam over a perceived oversight in not having a plate to hold food and wine, insulting Sam’s ability to manage the event. Despite Sam’s attempts to reason with her, Lexi remains stubborn and hurtful. Nell assures Sam that Lexi’s behavior is offensive and that Sam does not deserve it. Ultimately, Sam decides to throw away her scheduler and enjoy the party with Nell, choosing not to let Lexi’s negativity ruin the event for her.

Not Dead Yet (Season 1), Episode 6 Ending Explained:

What life lesson does Nell learn at the end from Terri?

Nell, Sam, and Dennis enjoyed the party together after the scheduler was dumped. While waiting for an available restroom, Nell and Sam have a conversation about how Lexi mistreated Sam. Nell tries to console her friend by telling her that she doesn’t need someone who treats her poorly, but Sam is intoxicated and suggests that someone should tell Lexi that she is selfish. In her inebriated state, Sam wants to confront Lexi directly. Concerned for her friend’s well-being, Nell follows after Sam but only finds Lexi alone.

As Nell tries to locate Sam, Terri, and Ham Hock appear before her and remind her of their previous warning about the consequences of not sharing with her friend. Meanwhile, Lexi appears visibly upset, describing the event as a complete disaster. Lexi had made last-minute changes to the party, catering to her father’s likes and dislikes, but ultimately he decided not to attend. Lexi received a call from her father’s assistant, notifying her that he wouldn’t be coming, just as he had failed to show up for her graduation, wedding, and even her birth.

Although Nell initially decides to leave the situation, she finds herself in the elevator with Terri and her puppet. Terri suggests that Nell should stay with Lexi since she is clearly upset. However, Nell is not in the mood to listen to advice from a puppet and becomes unkind to Terri. As a result of Nell’s unkind behavior, Terri is hurt, despite being a ghost. The spirit still possesses emotions and asks Nell why it is always challenging for her to heed good advice.

Nell’s unkind words make her realize that Terri is more than just a voice behind a puppet; she is a person with feelings. Terri chuckles in response, admitting that she, too, had momentarily forgotten this fact. Terri then shares that when she was a child, she had a stutter and was often bullied by other kids, which made her feel sad. However, one day, when she was feeling down, she looked at a sock puppet and began to laugh. Terri realized that she completely forgot to stutter whenever she talked to the puppet.

Nell is deeply moved by Terri’s story and learns that Ham Hock had allowed Terri to communicate with people. She realizes that even the prickliest individuals might be hiding immense pain and struggles deep down inside. Terri believes Nell could extend the same compassion to Lexi by listening to her. She suggested that Nell’s willingness to hear Lexi out could help her friend feel less burdened by her overwhelming emotions.

Nell takes a deep breath and musters the courage to return to Lexi. She approaches Lexi and asks how she is doing, but Lexi finds her sudden appearance strange and questions why she is there or if someone has sent her. Despite Lexi’s skepticism, Nell genuinely wants to know how her friend is doing because she noticed that she seemed upset.

Upon seeing Nell’s genuine concern, Lexi expresses her frustrations about her father. She reveales that he never paid attention to her, making her feel neglected. Lexi also confides in Nell about how bad she felt for mistreating Sam, as she only tried to impress her father. Despite Sam always being there for her, Lexi’s insecurities and desire to please her father had caused her to behave poorly toward her friend. Nell expresses that she has noticed Lexi’s tendency to be rude to her. In response, Lexi callously replies that she doesn’t care about Nell.

Lexi expresses her remorse for her harsh and intense behavior towards her friend and acknowledges that Sam has still managed to like her despite it all. She laments that her ill-treatment of Sam has ruined their friendship and realizes that this behavior does not represent who she truly is. Lexi also admitted to feeling like Nell dislikes her, especially now that Sam had formed a close bond with her. She feels Nell’s dislike towards her is even more apparent now that Sam has become closer to her.

Nell quickly clarifies that she has never disliked Lexi. She sometimes admits feeling envious of her, but it was never out of ill will towards her. Nell empathizes with Lexi’s situation and offers consolation for her father’s behavior. Lexi appreciates being heard and seen by Nell, but the conversation overwhelms her.

Nell approaches Sam, seated inside the truck Lexi had arranged for her father. Sam has been hesitant to confront Lexi about her frustrations due to her understanding of the personal struggles that Lexi is facing. However, Nell reveals that she had also gotten intoxicated during the event and shares similar sentiments about Lexi’s situation. This revelation surprises Sam, and they both realize that they have been drinking.
