Orb: On Movements of the Earth (Season 1) Episode 13 “Freedom” Recap:
The episode opens with a duel between Oczy and Nowak. However, when Oczy strikes, his blade breaks after coming in contact with Nowak’s sword. Despite that, Oczy fights hard and is about to hurt Nowak. At the same time, Oczy is hurt. In such a dire situation, Oczy says that fear of death is nothing compared to the fear of placing hope in the world. As Oczy pushes the blade toward Nowak’s throat, arrows pierce Oczy. Immediately, Oczy falls unconscious. The other inquisitors arrive in time to save Nowak. Since Oczy is hurt, Nowak asks the other inquisitors to make sure Oczy is cured, as he needs to question Oczy. In a dreamlike state, Oczy talks to a man who enlightens him about his desires.
When the man questions Oczy as to why he pursued heliocentrism, Oczy says it was to have hope in the world. However, the man thinks Oczy’s reason is superficial. Furthermore, the man tells Oczy to find his true desire, which drives him to believe in heliocentrism strongly. The reason is also something that most humans deeply desire. However, the man asks Oczy to find the answer. Soon, Oczy wakes up and sees Nowak by his bed. As soon as Oczy wakes up, he asks Nowak why he kept him alive, since sooner or later, Nowak will kill Oczy. Nowak says his job is to get answers from heretics, and killing is not a part of his job. Before the actual questioning begins, Nowak wants to know why heretics keep appearing even though everyone knows that by following the ordeals of God, one can go to heaven.
Why does Nowak keep Oczy alive?
Unfortunately, Oczy cannot speak for other heretics. But for him, the reason is the longing and desire for freedom. According to Nowak, freedom sounds good. However, without ordeals, humans become beasts. Oczy thinks if we don’t question these ordeals, even then humans are equal to beasts. To which Nowak says this blind faith led Oczy to kill three inquisitors. Oczy reminds Nowak that each side fought, believing in their respective ideals. Now, Oczy sits up and says he has nothing more to say. In a flashback, we see a conversation between Oczy and Badeni.
After completing his book, Oczy eagerly shares it with Badeni, only to watch in disbelief as Badeni burns it without hesitation, insisting that no trace of evidence can remain. Despite this precaution, Oczy voices his concern: if they are caught, confessing to the inquisitors that all evidence has been destroyed might not be enough to earn their trust. Skeptical of their chances, Badeni grimly acknowledges the reality—they must brace themselves for the unrelenting horrors of torture, should the inquisitors choose to press for answers.
Orb: On Movements of the Earth (Season 1) Episode 13 “Freedom” Ending Explained:
Presently, Nowak says there is an essence to torture. Usually, heretics are driven by the desire not to reveal information. Still, when the torture begins, the dilemma begins to either suffer through the pain or reveal information and be relieved from the pain. Then there are those people who have the will to suffer through the pain. Subsequently, the torture is extended to family and friends. However, Oczy says that he cannot give information he does not have. Nowak brings out Badeni and says Oczy is the person who will be tortured based on what Badeni will say. Now, Oczy and Badeni are put face to face, and the questioning begins. After the first few questions, Badeni says there were no other collaborators even though he had taken Jolenta’s help. With every question, Oczy is beaten.
Before the interrogation continues, Nowak thanks Oczy and Badeni for making him realize his mistakes and giving him an opportunity to correct them. Because Nowak was negligent and did not deal with heretics properly before, it gave Badeni and Oczy a chance to approach Jolenta. Ten years ago, Nowak came across a heretic (Rafal) to whom the necklace belongs (the necklace Oczy has). If Nowak had done his job correctly, then Nowak could have prevented everything else that happened later. The questioning continues, and Nowak asks Badeni where all the research material is, as Nowak knows Badeni has inherited the research.
Can Nowak Break Oczy and Badeni’s Resolve?
Badeni says it is true that the research has been inherited. But he did not have any interest in passing on the fruits of the study to a successor. Hence, the only record of the research is the one that Nowak has confiscated. The rest of the material has been burned. However, Nowak has dealt with enough heretics to know that the story makes logical sense, but Badeni is hiding something. The assumption Nowak makes is that the thing Badeni is hiding is based on Badeni’s emotions. Now, Badeni says it is a baseless assumption, but Nowak prepares himself with the tools required to torture Badeni and Oczy.
