Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 7 ‘Chapter Fifteen’ Recap:
In 1951, Noa (Kang Tae Joo) secured a place at Tokyo’s Waseda University to pursue further education. It brought joy to Sunja’s (Minha Kim) family, who had been through a lot. We see them celebrating the success of this child prodigy. The women in the family share their joy with the locals, who congratulate Noa. Mozasu (Mansaku Takada) grows older and starts leading his life as a teenager. With the rising political changes, Kim Chang-ho (Kim Sungkyu) begins to think of his future. He is torn between leading a life devoted to his love or his origins.
Chang-ho cannot be in a relationship with Kyunghee (Jun Eun-chae) in Yoseb’s presence. So, he starts thinking of other options for his future. Meanwhile, Hansu (Lee Min-ho) meets Noa before he leaves for his journey. Hansu offers an old watch as a charm for his future. Sunja notices that. She remembers the history connected to it but doesn’t reveal it to Noa—the family bonds over food and drinks. Before leaving, Noa takes a walk through their neighborhood, fondly looking at things he will miss. Sunja, Kyunghee, and Yangjin (Jeong In-ji) pack his clothes in a suitcase.
The Future of Sunja’s Family
Mozasu tells Noa about his desire to move to America to start a new life. He thinks it can give him a fresh start away from the things people know him or his family for. Later, Yoseb (Han Jun-woo) joins others for dinner and complains about Kyunghee’s cooking. It irritates Mozasu and Noa, who confront him for not leaving home for months because of his scarred face and expecting others to fulfill his unreasonable demands. Instead of staying in the shadows of his traumatic past, they want him to accept his truth. Their blunt response pushes Yoseb to accept his present life as it is.
Later, Hansu meets his father-in-law (Hiroaki Murakami), who recently planned to wed Hansu’s daughter to a member of his political party. Now, he forbids Hansu from attending his daughter’s wedding so as not to jeopardize the party’s future. Heartbroken, Hansu meets Sunja to discuss their sons’ past, present, and future. He regrets not cherishing the time he spent with Sunja in the past. He also opens up about his father-in-law’s betrayal. Sunja suggests he cut out the roots of his negative emotions rather than dwelling on the past.
Naomi’s Future
Naomi (Anna Sawai) continues to work at the Shifleys with the utmost dedication. One day, she faces something shocking at her job. Tom Andrews (Jimmi Simpson), who keeps plotting his prosperous exit from the company, finds some dirt on Naomi. He uses it to force Naomi to resign from her job. Despite her years of dedicated work, she is let go for a breach of confidentiality. She pleads to the senior officer for another chance to right her wrongs, but to no avail.
As she leaves, Tom calls Solomon (Jin Ha), his partner-in-crime against Katsu Abe, to reveal the news of Naomi’s departure. Tom and Solomon look at Naomi’s resignation positively since it facilitates their goal. Besides Solomon, his new business partner, Mamoru Yoshii (Louis Ozawa), is happy to hear this news as Naomi won’t be a threat to their business anymore.
Sunja and Kato-san
Sunja (Young Yuh-jung) remains friends with Kato-san (Jun Kunimura), who guides her in planting some indoor bonsai. He shares his wisdom on what the plants need and how they need to be taken care of. Somehow, it leads them to discuss their mortality. Sunja worries how Kato-san often speaks about how little time he or they have left to live. He opens up about the financial struggles people still face. While their generation assumed their struggle would lead to a better future, it doesn’t seem to be the case. So, Kato-san plans to return to his daughter’s house to make ends meet without much worry.
Hearing that, Sunja offers to lend Kato-san some money. Seeing her generosity, Kato-san invites Sunja to join him at his family home. She doesn’t agree to join but doesn’t refuse either. As it happens, Mozasu (Soji Arai) finds information about Kato-san’s past and present life. He realizes that Kato-san is struggling financially and hardly owns any assets. In the past, Kato-san served in the war and was put on trial for his actions related to the Massacre of Korean War POWs. So, Mozasu worries Kato-san is using Sunja’s sympathy for her money. Unlike before, Sunja and her family are doing well.

Does Kyunghee decide to lead her life with Chang-ho?
Back in Osaka, Chang-ho contemplates joining the forces of the North since he was born there. Hansu talks sense into him to convince him otherwise. However, with no hope of a life with Kyunghee, Chang-ho sees it as the only thing he can look forward to. Yoseb sees Chang-ho leave and decides to take a daring step.
