HBO’s highly anticipated fantasy series House of the Dragon will soon release its second season. Derived from George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood,” which delves into Westeros’ history approximately 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” season 1 sent all its viewers into a fervor. In a world where House Targaryen rules Westeros, the series focuses on the family feud for the crown that leads to a devastating battle of the Dragons, quite literally.

The story mainly pivots around the intricacies of the relationship between once-close friends Rhaenyra Targaryen (daughter of King Viserys and heir to the Iron throne) and  Alicent Hightower (Queen and second wife of King Viserys). The evolution of this relationship plays a vital role in influencing the succession and lays the groundwork for the epic “Dance of Dragons.”

Throughout the first season, every episode is a minefield of major turning points that significantly alter the trajectory of the crown. Emphasizing the importance of the crown, he mandates her to marry Ser Leanor Velaryon. However, Mysaria’s loyalties lie with her people. Instead of aligning herself with one faction, she chooses to leverage her position for the greater good. In a bold move,  Mysaria strikes a deal with Otto Hightower, offering Aegon’s location in exchange for the abolition of the horrific use of children in Flea Bottom’s fighting pits. This decision solidifies her central role in the conflict between the Blacks and the Greens, highlighting the delicate balance of power in King’s Landing. 4. Princess Rhaenys’ Dramatic Dragonpit Exit: A Moment of Mercy

Had circumstances unfolded differently, the conflict within House Targaryen might have been entirely avoided. Baelon’s survival could have established him as an undisputed heir, potentially erasing the conflicts within House Targaryen altogether. On the same night, as Alicent comforts Viserys in his pain, he rambles fragments of the prophecy intended for Rhaenyra, which Alicent misinterprets as his dying wish to crown Aegon king. This colossal fumble solidifies the conflict over succession between the Blacks and the Greens and splits the realm. This misunderstanding of Viserys’  potential change of heart on his heir sparks chaos. Had Viserys not spoken of the prophecy, the Green’s justification for Aegon’s ascension might have been weaker. 1. The Tragic Death of Lucerys Velaryon: Rhaenyra’s Breaking Point

Last but not least, in the whirlwind of “House of the Dragon” season 1, no event is as harrowing and pivotal as Lucerys Velaryon’s death at the jaws of Aemond Targaryen and his dragon, Vhagar. This tragic incident lays the groundwork for the nasty battles to come, altering the trajectory of the crown. Following Aegon’s coronation, Ser Erryk Cargyll’s audacious move to steal King Viserys’s crown allowed Rhaenyra’s coronation to be legitimized and her reign as queen recognized. Lucerys, on a mission to secure Storms End for the Blacks, encounters Aemond Targaryen, who is also there on a similar mission for the Greens.

On their way back on dragon back, the clash between Lucerys and Aemond escalates, resulting in both losing control of their dragons, leading to the unthinkable – enraged Vhagar devouring Lucerys and Arrax alive. Lucerys’ demise, committed by Aemond Targaryen on Vhagar, marks the tipping point.  His loss pushes Rhaenyra towards vengeance and fuels her determination to claim the throne, escalating the conflict into war.
