We have had the season 1 finale, i.e., Episode 10 of โ€œPlatonic,โ€ the zany yet heartwarming comedy from Apple TV+. The tenth and final episode is called โ€œWhen Will Met Sylvia,โ€ alluding to the romantic comedy โ€œWhen Harry Met Sally.โ€ โ€œWhen Harry Met Sallyโ€ was mentioned in the very first episode, highlighting the Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal starring filmโ€™s influence on the series. Along with the luring title of the series, creators Francesca Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller set the expectations straight with the filmโ€™s casual namedrop.

In โ€œWhen Harry Met Sally,โ€ Harry and Sally could not maintain a platonic relationship. โ€œPlatonicโ€ put that out in front, enticing us with the will-they-wonโ€™t-they vibe throughout the series. However, to the show’s credit, it swerves away from those possibilities. As a result, we have had a series exploring a platonic friendship that is undiluted and as organic as it comes. With eclectic humor and a fantastic pairing of Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, โ€œPlatonicโ€ finishes its memorable run, leaving us melancholic with a feeling that generally is associated with an Alexander Payne film (Sideways, The Descendants).

Platonic (Season 1 Finale), Episode 10 Recap:

Sylviaโ€™s New Home

Last week, Sylvia (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogen) destroyed Sylviaโ€™s garage while trying to investigate the space for an ADU. This triggered a conversation between Sylvia and her husband, Charlie (Luke Macfarlane) – a conversation that had been coming for a long time. After numerous awkward moments, one dry-humping incident, and finally the destruction of their house, Charlie and Sylvia talked about how Charlie felt neglected when she was around Will.ย

The conversation was fruitful for their marriage; its result is shown in this weekโ€™s finale. Sylvia and Charlie, reminiscent of the first episode, resume their house-hunting, something Sylvia stopped after she restarted her friendship with Will. And they strike gold. They get their dream house with three bathrooms, albeit with a catch. The house was the site of a triple homicide. But that is not a dampener for Sylvia and Charlie.ย

The UFO Sighting

So Sylvia throws a housewarming party where Charlieโ€™s work friends and Sylviaโ€™s friends are invited. Will is invited too. While trying to fix the decorative lighting, Will and Sylvia go to the roof. During the rooftop conversation, both of them observe a flying object in the sky. After ruling out that it could not be helicopters, drones, or anything that they recognize, both of them jump to the conclusion that they saw an UFO (Unidentified Flying Object).ย

As with most UFO sightings, this also comes with excitement about alien existence and skepticism towards conspiracy theorists. The excited Will cannot control himself as he regales everyone in the party with the story. Sylvia also joins him in the beginning. But she quickly realizes that their new neighbors are not exactly reciprocating their enthusiasm. On the contrary, Willโ€™s excited but profanity-riddled rants are making them uncomfortable.ย

So she changes her position and asks Will to stop and pulls him away from everyone. This triggers an argument between them where Will feels that Sylvia threw him under the bus. The argument gets bad and Will storms out of the party.ย

Sylviaโ€™s Helping Hand for Will

In the last episode, we wondered whether Sylvia can be the legal counselor in his battle with his friends and business partners, Andy (Tre Hale) and Reggie (Andrew Lopez). Will did not want to resolve this amicably as Andy and Reggie tried to buy him out of his bar. His revolt caused Reggie, along with a reluctant Andy, to make Omar (Vinny Thomas) the brewmaster. So Will has to work under Omar, and he hated how Omar massacred his beloved beer recipes with hilarious but catastrophic experimentations.ย

After their UFO argument, Sylvia and Will stopped talking. But things change when Sylvia learns from a lawyer that Johnny Rev is getting charged with multiple sexual harassment lawsuits. Johnny Rev was the owner of a big restaurant chain that wanted to partner up with Willโ€™s business. But it did not happen due to Johnny Rev trying to forcibly kiss Sylvia and then insulting her.ย

So, when Sylvia learns that Johnny is being replaced by Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom), who was keen to work with Will, Sylvia helps Will reach out to Johnny Revโ€™s office in San Diego. Jenna appreciates Willโ€™s brewing skills and immediately becomes ready for a partnership where Will would be heading the brewery division of the chain. But, this means Will moving to San Diego, away from Sylvia.ย

Platonic (Season 1 Finale), Episode 10 Ending Explained:

What is the future for Sylvia and Will?

Will Charlie be okay with his โ€˜Wifeโ€™s boyfriendโ€™?

โ€œPlatonicโ€ did a great job of portraying an organic platonic friendship between two persons who could have sex if they wanted. Will and Sylvia knew what society, and occasionally their closest people, thought of their friendship. But they persevered.ย  From Sylviaโ€™s side, her husband, Charlie seems to have moved past this friendship. Charlie never had a problem with Sylvia and Willโ€™s friendship or the side of Sylvia this platonic relationship brings. Although his colleagues often teased him about Will being his โ€œWifeโ€™s boyfriend,โ€ Charlieโ€™s problem was that he was not a part of this goofy Sylviaโ€™s life that Willโ€™s friendship brings.ย

This is highlighted when he offers to hunt for UFOs with Sylvia. He just wants to be a part of every version of Sylvia. In a way, Willโ€™s conversation helps Sylvia to repair her marriage. Will also goaded her towards her new job at being a wedding planner. And her first client is her friend, Katie (Carla Gallo), who is marrying Willโ€™s friend, Andy.ย

What happens to Will and Sylvia after one year?

So, we witness time-jump of one year. Will is happy in his position at Johnny Rev Restaurant. He is also in a relationship with Jenna. Sylvia has successfully managed to host a great wedding for Katie and Andy. At the wedding, Sylvia and Will meet after one long year. Their montage of memories signify how cherished this platonic relationship has been for them. How each one of them has influenced the other, for good and for bad. In the end, it proves to be a friendship that is remarkable in its odds-defying nature of remaining platonic. And it ends that way when Sylvia admits that Will was right about the UFO, and embarks on another of their eccentric conversations.ย

Will there be a continuation of โ€œPlatonicโ€?

The season ends with a perfect closing touch. Will and Sylviaโ€™s story remains as it was in the first episode. Their relationship comes full circle after many humorous events and obstacles. They seem to be happy in their respective romantic relationships. It does seem a bit unwarranted to continue this. Having said that, there is every scope to continue and I would definitely love to see Will and Sylvia having one more conversation.ย

Sadly, it seems Apple TV+ has not renewed it yet. Both Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen are busy movie stars, so having them on board for another season would be tricky. But since there has been no official word that it definitely is not happening, we can hope for more.ย
