Qifarah (2026) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
The film opens in 1977, a young boy, Yusoff, is playing with a toy monkey with his sister Eykha and their friend Din. Since it’s late, Yusoff’s mother asks the kids to go to bed. Since Din liked the toy monkey, Yusoff asked Din to keep it with him and give it back the next morning. As the clock strikes three, Din heads to Yusoff’s room to give the toy back. Suddenly, an adult Yusoff wakes up dreaming about this memory. It’s 2007, and Yusoff has come back home after 30 years of being away, as his father, Ghazali, is dying. On the way to the house, Yusoff’s wife, currently in Cairo with their son, Mikhail, calls Yusoff to check on him. Since Marissa has not met Yusoff’s family, she wants to visit as well, but Yusoff stops her, saying he does not want Marissa to associate herself with his family. After talking to Mikhail and encouraging him to learn Quran verses, Yusoff hangs up.
What does Yusoff experience in his childhood home?
The one driving Yusoff is Pak Mat, who has known the family for a long time. Out of curiosity, Yusoff asks Pak Mat if nothing has changed, so Pak Mat says there is nothing in the world that remains the same forever. At home, Yusoff spots a grown-up Eykha, deranged, doing weird things. However, Eykha sees Yusoff and recognises him immediately. One of the first things Eykha tells Yusoff is that their mom Nur does not want Yusoff home. However, Nur is long gone. Even after all these years, while being mentally unstable, Eykha has not forgiven Yusoff for leaving Eykha alone and running away. After Eykha leaves, Ghazali’s second wife, Mawar, greets Yusoff, saying Eykha’s mental health deteriorated after Nur ran away. Inside Yusoff’s old room, he is reminded of the fond memories he had with Nur and Eykha. Inside the toy box, Yusoff finds the old toy monkey.
Soon, Mawar asks Yusoff to greet his father, who is awake now. Currently, Ghazali is bedridden. When Ghazali opens his eyes, he panics as he sees a ghost of a wounded boy. So, Yusoff repeats Shahada. This calms down Ghazali, who goes back to sleep. After that, Yusoff recalls playing with Din and enters a room. Suddenly, a ghostly Din keeps approaching Yusoff, and the room’s door is locked. Thankfully, Eykha opens the door, freeing Yusoff. During dinner, Eykha says she met her mother the previous day. So, Mawar asks the helper, Neng, to take Eykha away and give her milk and honey. This is how Mawar decides to treat Eykha, as she does not believe in modern medicine. In his sleep, Yusoff has memories or dreams of a ritual. Waking up from the nightmare, Yusoff takes out the monkey toy, which starts to play on its own.
Will Ghazali survive?

Suddenly, a window opens, and the monkey continues to function, so Yusoff starts chanting a prayer. The toy monkey stops moving. The next morning, Yusoff wakes up to find Marissa having breakfast with Mawar, while Eykha and Mikhail play. Later, Marissa and Yusoff get into an argument as Yusoff does not want Marissa and Mikhail near his family. Through the argument, we learn that Marissa had cheated on Yusoff a long time ago. Furthermore, Marissa does not have a family of her own, hence she wants to get close to Yusoff’s family. So, Yusoff introduces his wife and child to Ghazali. When Ghazali opens his eyes and sees Mikhail, he panics. As Yusoff tries to calm Ghazali, Ghazali says ‘snake’ and takes his last breath. Since it is late that day, Pak Mat advises they bury Ghazali the following day.
Meanwhile, Eykha tells Mikhail that she never had any friends and hopes Mikhail can become her friend. So the duo bond. In the room, Yusoff is talking to Marissa, apologising for things he said, and decides they need to leave soon. However, Marissa comes from outside to Yusoff’s surprise. That night, Yusoff dreams of a ritual, and Mawar is among those taking part. When Yusoff wakes up, the power is out, so Yusoff checks the house with a torch. Suddenly, Yusoff sees ghost Din and another ghost asking Yusoff why he had returned. The power comes on, and Neng calms Yusoff. There is a knock on the door, and it is Pak Mat with Eykha. As usual, Eykha had left home to meet Nur. Later, Pak Mat tells Yusoff that Mawar said she can treat Eykha, so he has no say in it.
What happens to Mikhail?
The next morning, as people are digging land to bury Ghazali, blood seeps out of the ground. So, Yusoff decides to finish the task at hand. Finally, Ghazali’s body is buried. As this is going on, Marissa confides in Mawar that she lost her parents to an accident when she was 19. However, Marissa is living with guilt as she couldn’t repay her parents for all the sacrifices they made for her. Now, Mawar comforts Marissa and asks her to call her mother, as they are family. At the same time, Mawar reveals her story. There was a fire in Mawar’s house, so she lost her family. Just in time, Mawar escaped. At that time, Ghazali saw Mawar and decided to marry her, even though he was already married to Nur. At that time, Nur was pregnant with Eykha. After the final rites, Mikhail decides to sit on a bench in the garden area.
At home, Yusoff is panicking, asking Marissa to pack her bags as they need to leave. Since Mikhail arrived, the spirit has grown stronger. However, Marissa does not listen to Yusoff and continues to argue with him. In the garden area, Mikhail sees Ghazali just as Eykha blocks the view. The duo plays football. The ball goes far away, so Mikhail runs to grab it. Suddenly, two bony hands try to pull Mikhail down. In the house, Marissa and Yusoff hear Mikhail’s scream and run. They see Eykha trying to revive Mikhail, who has fainted. In a frenzy, Yusoff pushes Eykha and carries Mikhail home. At home, Mawar convinces the couple to let Mikhail rest for the night, and the fever will come down. Even though Yusoff is against it, Marissa convinces Yusoff. That night, Mawar uses home remedies to raise Mikhail’s consciousness. However, the fever is still running high.
What happened to Nur?
The next day, Pak Mat tells Yusoff that the people living in the house have made it possible for evil spirits to reside there as well. Now, Yusoff is curious if Mawar follows polytheism. However, Pak Mat says they are old tales. It is revealed that Pak Mat was the one who took Yusoff to the airport one night, promising that Nur would be there as well. However, Pak Mat says Nur ran away. Changing the subject, Pak Mat asks Yusoff to join him for tahlil at the mosque that evening. That night, Eykha apologizes to Marissa for what happened to Mikhail. After that, Yusoff apologizes to Eykha for pushing her away. So, Eykha says Yusoff is the only family she has left, so if Yusoff intends to add grief to her already troubled life, then Yusoff should just leave.

Now, Mikhail has a nightmare of seeing Ghazali in the garden and a ghost boy emerging from beneath the bed. After calming Mikhail, Marissa heads down to find four people eating human flesh. Suddenly, Mawar arrives and says they are her relatives. When Marissa tries to run, Mawar pushes her to the floor. After tahlil, Pak Mat decides to reveal the truth to Yusoff. The story goes that Mawar had a hold on everyone, and Pak Mat had to follow her orders. At that time, Nur was suspicious that Mawar’s black magic power was strong. On every blood moon, a small boy is sacrificed. When Din was sacrificed, Yusoff watched it. So, Mawar wanted to kill Yusoff. However, Nur stood in the way, so Mawar killed Nur, which gave Yusoff a chance to live. After that, Ghazali sent Yusoff away. It was Pak Mat who buried Nur.
Qifarah (2026) Movie Ending Explained:
Now, Pak Mat asks Yusoff to save his family. In the house, Eykha is fast asleep. Mikhail is tied to a bed-like structure as people prepare for a ritual, while Nur is tied, sitting in the room. Meanwhile, the ghosts of the little boys and Nur kill Pak Mat. Once Yusoff reaches the basement, he is hit and made to sit next to Marissa. Now, Mawar says Ghazali wrote everything in her name, so she has nothing to worry about. Furthermore, Mawar was the one who made Ghazali call Yusoff and bring him home. When Mawar is about to kill Mikhail, Yusoff asks Mawar to take him and not Ghazali’s grandson.
Now, Mawar laughs and asks Marissa to reveal the truth. Turns out Mikhail is not Yusoff’s son. Using this anger, Mawar gives the knife to Yusoff, taking control of him to kill Marissa. However, Yusoff notices a snake band on Mawar’s hand. Taking the opportunity, Yusoff cuts the band, making Mawar fall to the ground and turn into an old lady. Now, Marissa uses the knife to free herself as Yusoff frees Mikahil. As Mawar is on the bed, Marissa cuts the chandelier rope, making it fall on Mawar. A candle burns Mawar and starts burning the place down. The family escapes, but first Yusoff brings Eykha with them. The whole family drives away from the burning house.
The script feels quite normal with nothing new to add to the genre. You would expect at least some twists and turns, but it didn’t deliver. Mostly because, from the beginning, Yusoff knew his family used black magic and who the main person behind it was. So it was surprising to see Yusoff be normal with Mawar, accepting all her rules. The true villain, other than Mawar, was Marissa. That character had no redeeming qualities. She cheated, didn’t reveal to Yusoff that Mikhail was not really his son. Even Pak Mat was suspicious throughout the film, so his revelations were not surprising to the viewers, at least. However, before dying, Pak Mat helped save Mikhail and end this black magic curse. Thanks to Ghazali’s clue of the snake, Yusoff connected the dots during a tense situation to break the family curse once and for all, ensuring no other innocent child or family is hurt because of Mawar and her practices.
