“The Sympathizer” is a miniseries based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The series encompasses seven episodes out of which three will be directed by Park Chan-wook. Though Chan-wook’s direction can be seen in only three episodes, what remains consistent throughout the series is the appearance of legendary actor Robert Downey Jr.
In the trailer of “The Sympathizer,” Robert Downey Jr. is seen donning several different disguises and presumably playing several roles within the same character. While expectations are automatically elevated if Downey is involved, the series also features an ensemble star cast, including Hoa Xuande and Sandra Oh.
The Sympathizer follows the story of a spy working for the communist Vietnamese government during the Vietnam War.
The series is produced to air on HBO, premiering on April 14, 2024.
