The 1968 horror classic Rosemary’s Baby is all set to get a prequel on Paramount+. The upcoming film, titled Apartment 7A, will premiere on the streaming platform ahead of this coming Halloween season. The executive vice president of programming at Paramount+, Jeff Grossman, shared in a statement to Variety, “Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season. Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre.“
Apartment 7A was first announced in March 2021. When filming finally wrapped in June 2022, the makers revealed that it was secretly a prequel to Roman Polanski’s acclaimed 1968 horror film, Rosemary’s Baby.
The original film, Rosemary’s Baby, is based on Ira Levin’s 1967 novel of the same name. The film stars Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse, a newlywed living in Manhattan who becomes pregnant. But she soon begins to suspect that her neighbors are members of a Satanic cult who are grooming her to use her baby for their rituals. Released in 1968, the psychological horror film directed by Roman Polanski was a critical and box office success, grossing over $30 million, and received acclaim from critics. It was nominated for several accolades, including multiple Golden Globe Award nominations and two Academy Award nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Ruth Gordon) and the Golden Globe in the same category.
Since its release, Rosemary’s Baby has been widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Now, it is time to see if the upcoming prequel can match the original.
