School Spirits (Season 1) Episode 6: In the most recent episode of Paramount+ School Spirits, Season 1, the characters finally shed their previous wardrobes, which was a refreshing change. For weeks, viewers had watched Maddie don the same outfit repeatedly, making her appearance in a stunning, furry red dress for the Homecoming Dance all the more delightful. Furthermore, the episode provided one of the characters with the closure they had been yearning for, culminating in one of the most poignant moments of the season.
School Spirits (Season 1), Episode 6 Recap:
At the beginning of the episode, Maddie informs Simon that she will be attending the homecoming dance with Wally. Simon becomes visibly upset at this news. Meanwhile, Claire sits with her friends when she reveals that Xavier has asked her to be his dance partner. However, her friends start judging her decision, prompting Claire to retaliate by criticizing their partner’s choices. Later, she agrees to Xavier’s invitation via text and requests that he wear a suit to the dance. Xavier shares the news of Claire’s acceptance with Nicole and Simon, which sets off Maddie’s “Operation Claire” plan.
The group devises a plan to use Xavier to blackmail Claire, similar to how she had blackmailed Mr. Anderson for good grades. Simon instructs Xavier to corner Claire and extract a confession from her while recording the conversation on his phone. Meanwhile, Maddie seeks Rhonda’s help choosing a dress for her date with Wally to the homecoming dance. During their discussion, Maddie asks Rhonda if ghosts can have sex. Rhonda realizes that Maddie is a virgin, but Wally interrupts them before they can continue talking about it. He arrives to confirm whether Maddie has changed her mind about accompanying him to the dance.
In the meantime, Claire visits the boys’ locker room to question Xavier about his sudden text message. He tries to persuade her by claiming he had wanted to text her for a while but only managed to build up the courage to hit send now. He adds that he misses her, attempting to make it more genuine. Claire agrees to pick him up in her car the following day at 7 pm.
Later, Maddie is seen reviewing Charley’s letters for Emilio. She advises him to make the note sound like when he was alive rather than simply pouring his heart out. Maddie also encourages Charley to forgive himself after Emilio reads the letters, so he can finally move on with his life. In her words, she urges him to “live your death.”
Nicole and Simon discuss whether or not she has made any progress in tracing the source of the video that captured Claire and Mr. Anderson arguing. During their conversation, Simon reveals that his parents have confiscated his car. Xavier starts to have second thoughts about the plan after receiving a photo from Claire. He expresses his concerns to Simon, but Simon urges him to follow the plan as he owes it to Maddie.
Simon visits Sandra, who hands him an essay that Maddie wrote for her college application and asks him to draft it for submission online. Simon informs Sandra that the original plan was for the three friends to stay together in the same city and that he and Maddie had already submitted their applications. Sandra asks if Maddie has contacted Simon, and he lies and hugs her before leaving her home. Before leaving, Simon takes a picture of Maddie.
Meanwhile, at Xavier’s house, Claire hands over a check to Xavier’s father, Sheriff Baxter, for his re-election campaign. She subtly tries to gather information about whether Mr. Anderson has said anything against her during the ongoing investigation. However, Baxter refuses to give her any information as Xavier listens to their conversation.
On the way to the dance, Claire stops her car to speak with Xavier, which worries him. He fears that she may do something drastic, but it ends up being a warning about her allegedly mean-spirited friends and a kiss.
At the dance, Simon tells Maddie that he has transcribed Charley’s letters for the living world and Maddie shares that Charley expresses his eternal gratitude towards him. She also advises Simon to tell Emilio he discovered the letters in an old library book.
As Maddie becomes increasingly preoccupied with the operation to expose Claire, Wally feels neglected and tells her she’s not ready to be dead yet. Meanwhile, Xavier grows restless about Claire’s lack of communication with him, leading to a confrontation between Xavier and Simon, with both having different ideas about how to proceed. Simon avoids a distressed Sandra’s calls, but Nicole answers when she calls her, and Sandra tells her that she heard someone in her backyard and assumes it’s Maddie. Nicole goes to Sandra’s house to investigate, leaving Simon alone at the party.
At the dance, Simon hands over the letter Charley wrote to Emilio. Maddie cannot focus on Wally because she constantly thinks about Claire and Xavier. Meanwhile, Claire and Xavier leave the dance to make out in the boiler room, where Xavier tries to record their conversation on his phone, but Claire catches him. In another part of town, the police find a weapon near where they had found Maddie’s backpack.
What does Claire confess to Xavier about?
After a heated argument, Claire eventually admits to Xavier about blackmailing Mr. Anderson when he shows her the video that the group had received in the last episode. She explains that she knew of the money Mr. Anderson had frauded the school for and only wanted an A in his class. Additionally, she confesses to taking Maddie’s phone because she suspected Maddie recorded her conversation with Mr. Anderson and wanted to delete the video.
But Claire couldn’t because of the lock, so she gave the phone to Mr. Anderson, hoping he could pay Maddie off and delete the evidence against them. Claire also confesses that being perfect has been challenging, and she has tried her best not to fail by any means necessary. She vehemently denies any involvement in Maddie’s injury despite Xavier’s suspicions.
On the other hand, Emilio reads Charley’s letter with tears in his eyes, which provides some comfort to Charley. Claire is crowned homecoming queen, and Xavier tells Simon that Claire is innocent, and he believes her.
