Somebody Somewhere (Season 2) Episode 2: The previous episode of โ€˜Somebody Somewhereโ€™ showed a few glimpses of Sam and Joelโ€™s ‘totally platonic love story.’ Joel now resides with Sam and rents his house on Airbnb. With Ed having left the town to spend some time in peace, Sam is left with the responsibility of taking care of the family farm. It puts a burden on her since she has to take care of it herself. Tricia struggles with the empty nest since Shannon leaves the town for higher education. Fred makes his return to the town after months as Mary Jo is back in a hospital.

Somebody Somewhere (Season 2) Episode 2 Recap:

Sam (Bridget Everett), Joel (Jeff Hiller), Fred Rococo (Murray Hilli), and Tiffani (Mercedes White) come together to play poker. Sam loves the cheesy poofs that Fred gifted her and Joel the moment she visited their place. You sense how free she feels with these people, who have become her troop over her time in this Kansan town. There is no guilt or shame. They soon start talking about Joelโ€™s house rules for his guests. He gets surprised to hear that no one cares to follow such regulations. Sam jokes about what those people would be doing at his place, and they have a laugh about it.

Thatโ€™s when Susan walks in, and Fred gives her a warm welcome. No one knew who she was until Fred nonchalantly revealed her as his fiancรฉe. Well, when did that happen? Everyone wonders. Fred is surprisingly quiet about it. No one is angry at him for not sharing it before. They are rather pleased that he found someone who adores him. They all get a hug from Susan right after she enters. It shows how much she wants to be invited and accepted by Fredโ€™s gang. Anyhow, the gang congratulates Fred on it.

Susan joins them in the poker game, and Fred tells the gang more about her. She is a mathematician, and while going to his motherโ€™s place, he also wanted her to meet Susan. He married her and offered her a shoulder to weep on following her divorce from her ex-husband. Fred expresses his desire to no longer play on the field. Susan speaks about how she came out to her parents about having a trans boyfriend. While everyone gushes about their love, Sam does not look as pleased as others.

Back in the car, Sam and Joel talk about this surprise, about Fred getting married and keeping it away from them. Although Fred and Susan knew each other from much before, Sam and Joel learned about this only then. Joel is surprised but happy regardless. Sam says she is too. But she seems a little unsure on how to feel about it. But Joel is such a sweetheart! He senses Samโ€™s own fear of being left behind. He says that he will always be there to tie her shoelaces. But, she wants to stay sad and does not want it to turn into a ‘tender moment.’ There is such a developed understanding between them about one another, and none of their words hurt the other.

The next day, Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) drives up to the care house to meet Mary Jo (Jane Brody) as per Edโ€™s wishes. But she does not want to meet her and so waits for Sam to arrive. Sam finally arrives and senses Trishโ€™s frustration, and joins her for that visit. Turns out, MJ puts Sam on a no-visitors list. Sam takes it in a stride and does not let Tricia be Karen.

Fred meets Joel and Sam at a restaurant and asks them to help him with the wedding. She wants Joel to officiate it and wants Sam to sing at the ceremony. They are both hesitant and say that they might ruin his and Susanโ€™s special day. But Fred calls them family and says that he wants them to be there.

The couple goes to a local store to check gifts for both Fred and Susan. Joel thinks of getting something sweet but edible for Fred. On the other hand, they try to figure out Susanโ€™s interests, unsure what she would like. Joel thinks of sex gummies or some kind of powder. After beating around the bush, Sam finally talks about a song she thinks will be good for the reception. She shares the tape recorder for Joel to listen to it. However, she is a tad apprehensive. She thinks it wonโ€™t work after the people hear Susanโ€™s sweet voice. Joel still tears up just by listening to the recording.

After leaving Tender Moments on an abrupt note, Tricia now works at Ballards Grocery store. An old woman passes by and recognizes her. Trish does not remember a thing about her. But the lady knows almost everything about Tender Moments โ€“ her and Triciaโ€™s gift shop. Unfortunately, she mistakes Tricia to be Charity, which hurts Trish beyond words. Anyhow, the woman says how Charity is doing too well for herself with her new real estate business. So, Trish takes out her anger on some stuff from the store. Later, she looks at Charityโ€™s Instagram and decides to tag her in a photo of the lying c*** cushion.

Somebody Somewhere (Season 2) Episode 2 Ending, Explained:

Sam now works at Reed & Elliot Jewellers and is great at communicating with their customers. Her boss applauds her salespersonship. Then he shares that Darlene Edwards is still in the town and having a fall recital. It seems like someone Sam had always wanted to learn more from but drifted apart because of her bad period in between.

Anyhow, now Sam and Joel go to that local school’s fall recital to see the students perform. Sam gets a little uncertain about herself when she sees the children perform. ‘Fred can hire a girl instead,’ she says something along those lines. Then a middle-aged man suddenly walks up on the stage and starts passionately singing, which makes her and Joel burst out into laughter.

After the recital, Sam meets Darlene and asks if she can help her with some lessons. She accepts to do so, and it warms Sam’s heart. On the other hand, the middle-aged man offers Joel some strange kind of sushi. He calls it his family recipe. Joel feigns interest in front of the man and takes a bite, scared by what he is putting in his mouth. Joel also shares it with Sam, and they both laugh about its strange taste.

Back at home, Sam puts on the cassette of her singing as a kid. The lines go like this โ€“ ‘When youโ€™re feeling down, nothing feels alright. Go outside, get some light, and make your troubles right…’ They reflect her state of mind. It makes her feel relieved knowing that she has a calming voice within herself. She lost it in the years of her falling into a rut and not being able to commit to this skill. It isn’t her fault, either. Instead of lamenting, she tries to embrace what she has now. Bridget is such a phenomenal actress that she conveys all of it without saying a single word. The close-ups also serve just the right way to capture her tender realizations.

Then suddenly, Sam feels something weird in her stomach. So, she rushes right to the bathroom. She calls Joel to see how he is doing โ€“ also to know where he is going through these symptoms. She puts the call on mute when she farts and gets back on call right after. Joel does the same from his side. After a point, they forget when to put the call on mute and when to get back to talking on the call. As a result, they end up sharing their farting sounds with each other and realize what they just did. He says this is a new level of intimacy for them. Sam looks back at the empty roll and realizes she forgot to take out the toilet paper from her truck. What a great, great piece of writing!
