Episode 6 of Sugar, titled “Going Home,” marks the first disappointing episode in the series in spite of featuring one of the show’s biggest reveals. Not that the reveal is disappointing, but the episode feels like it somehow let go of the razor-clipped editing for a more straightforward approach without giving us a reason for the shift. The episode still walks through on the abled shoulders of Colin Farrell. I just hope the remaining two episodes don’t let me down as well.

The following article will analyze the latest episode, including all major developments and that super-wild ending. Please be aware of potential spoilers

Sugar Episode 6 “Going Home” Recap:

After episode 5’s big suicide attempt, we learn that Davy is not dead. However, the doctor informs Margrit and Bernie that he will never have his brain function for the rest of his life. Essentially, this makes him a vegetable who will be stuck to the bed for all his life, making him almost dead.

On the other hand, John is preparing himself for the big day when he will finally be face-to-face with Stallings, investigating Olivia’s whereabouts. He has stationed Charlie outside Stallings’ crib, which is being looked after by Roberta. When Charlie informs John that Stallings has arrived, he gets on his way, informing Ruby about going there. Ruby warns him about what he is going to do by saying that Stallings is a dangerous man and he should stay away. When John reaches the place, he informs Charlie that he will be going in to find out something about Olivia, and if he is not back in 10 minutes, Charlie should take action. However, when John does enter the place, he is cornered by Stallings and the others, who are able to get the upper hand. They even get to Charlie, who is not able to intervene.

John, in his cheeky way, warns them about not forcing him to use violence because he has recently decided not to use force to get his way. Stallings is pissed by John’s warning and asks his associates to shoot him. However, miraculously, John is able to literally deviate the bullet (more on this later) and overpower the three of them. The mishap injures John, too, who is stabbed by Roberta.

Why did Ruby betray John?

When all of them are down, John checks in on Stallings’ phone and finds a message that reads, “Sugar is coming. GET OUT NOW.” John recognizes the number and is shocked to realize that he has been betrayed. He requests Stallings to tell him about Olivia, but when he doesn’t, he shoots him in the head.

What was behind the locked door?

Now, coming to the mysterious door that we have been seeing in Stallings’ place, our expectations are not met with positive results. John breaks into the door, expecting to find Olivia, but all that he finds is a couple of captive dogs that Stallings has been mistreating for personal use. Sugar releases one of them when he realizes that he is not affected by Stallings’ intentions yet.

Later, on realizing that his trust is jeopardized, John uses a cell phone from one of Stallings’ men to call Melanie. Completely injured, he somehow makes his way to a roadside motel where Melanie is already present. She requests John to go to a hospital with her, but when John refuses, she is forced to call Henry (Jason Butler Harner), one of John’s associates we saw at Ruby’s party. He temporarily fixes him up by giving him blood (this is not the usual human blood, but a mysterious new version of it: Read – more on this later).

What does Bernie decide about Davy?

We also see Bernie coming to talk to his bedridden father about what happened to Davy. We again learn that Bernie did not have a good upbringing, with Jonathan being a bad father, but he tried his best to make things better for Davy. However, he reiterates and accepts that the privilege the Seigel name gave them was also a kind of curse that was the first coming of bad things. Before leaving, he tells Jonathan that he and Margit have decided to let Davy go, meaning taking him off life support.

Why did Ruby choose to betray John’s trust?

On the other hand, John, haunted by the need for answers, wakes up midway through his healing rest and goes to Ruby’s house. He asks her again and again about her betrayal and the necessity to save someone as vile as Stallings, but Ruby keeps her silence, saying that she won’t be able to let him know why she did what she did. The only thing she tells him is that keeping people like Stallings safe is ‘for the greater good’ and ‘part of the mission.’

John even goes ahead and questions Ruby’s morality for saving a human trafficker, but a miserable Ruby is unable to answer him, claiming that it is for his own good. Sugar is unhappy with this realization and tells her that Olivia is still missing, and in spite of the promise he made, he has been unable to trace her because of scums like Stallings taking her away for their own profits. The only thing Ruby is able to tell him again is to stop looking for Olivia, which has been instructed by her superiors.

Before John leaves, he asks Ruby to give him some aspirin. After checking the cabinet in her kitchen, Ruby claims that she has some upstairs. However, when she comes back downstairs, John has already left, leaving the cabinet with a bottle of aspirin open. This shows that John has stopped trusting Ruby completely. His only confidant in this world is not there for him.

Sugar Episode 6 “Going Home” Ending, Explained:

Is John Sugar an alien?

The wild ending of Sugar Episode 6 finds John returning to the motel room with a fast-asleep Melanie. He is heartbroken and down and wants to just find some kind of semblance in this weird world. So, we see him locking himself in the bathroom and injecting himself with the serum that we have been seeing all through the show, wishing to ‘Go Home.’ However, this time, we do learn who John actually is.

When he injects the serum, we see him transforming into an alien entity (something resembling the Skrulls in The Avengers). Now, I know a neo-noir-loving John Sugar wouldn’t like that reference, but the alien design feels pretty shabby. The being able to deviate a fired bullet, or the infusion of a different blood into his body now makes sense.

The serum, on the other hand, is basically a teleporting element that cojoins Earth with the alien planet that John is from. One thing the ending confirms is this – John Sugar and the entirety of Ruby’s colleagues feel like a part of a secret alien organization that helps humans out. They have been serving humans for so long that they have also started doing their dirty work. Only John Sugar has his moral compass in the right place and wouldn’t let adversities and bad behavior go away without punishing the one responsible.
