Technoboys (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Technoboys” (2024) follows a boy band that decides to return to the stage after over two decades of hiatus. They plan to rule the pop world and leave a mark. However, they face many challenges along the way.

What happens in ‘Technoboys’?

“Technoboys” on Netflix revolves around a reunion of a fictional 90s boy band called Technoboys featuring Alan, Charlie, Leo, Freddy, and Babyface. They quickly became heartthrobs of their generation. Masiosare Mendoza (Ari Brickman), who brought them together, had reused a successful formula before with Los Saobrigenes with Number Juan (Vin Ramos) as their key focus. The media decided to pit them as each other’s rivals to cash in on its cultural impact. Around this time, Maria Elena Harris, AKA Melena (Karla Souza), also became a pop star. She and Alan collaborated, which led to the stories of their romance.

Masiosare also fell in love with Melena at the time, and they soon got married. Alan showed up at Melena and Masiosare’s wedding ceremony to break their marriage. This public stunt made Alan lose Melena and his pop stardom. Years later, Alan (Luis Gerardo Méndez) lives an ordinary life, working on petty gigs. Unlike him, Melena continues to top the charts with her music. While she receives multiple nominations at the Latin Grammys, she is completely shut out at the American Grammys. So, she complains about the American committee’s racist attitude toward her.

Technoboys’ Reunion

Alan misses his pop stardom and gets tired of living like a failure. He also gets disappointed seeing Melena achieve while he is left behind. Then, his current manager, George (Gabriel Nuncio), shares pleasant news. The term Technoboys is now copyright-free. So Alan can reunite with his old pals and reform the band. Firstly, Alan and George contact Babyface (Luis Rodríguez Guana). He left the show business years ago and has been working as a private investigator. Although Babyface looks old, he agrees to return at the drop of a hat. Then, the three get in touch with Leo (Joaquín Ferreira), who now lives in a pseudo-spiritual retreat at a remote location with his wife, Aguacero (Paola Fernandez), and two kids.

Leo and Aguacero claim that they are above material possessions. However, the moment Alan mentions the opportunity to earn money, Leo agrees to return to the band. Then, the four band members contact Freddy (Fernando Bonilla). Unlike before, they do not even need to convince Freddy to return. Once Freddy shows up at their spot of rehearsal, the four realize that he is wheelchair-ridden. Soon, they meet Charlize (Daniela Vega), the fifth member of their band, a trans woman who now composes queer anarchic music. Still, she agrees to reunite, claiming it would help her fight against the bourgeoisie.

Band’s Internal Conflicts

Although the band reunites, the members face internal conflicts. Freddy is a staunch conservative who does not accept Charlize. Alan also needs to resolve his fair share of issues. Since he cannot accept himself, he cannot accept her either. Around this time, Number Juan also announces a new album of their boy bond. Subsequently, Alan has an emotional meltdown. He posts a video online denigrating vulnerable groups of people through his rant. It leads to a heated argument between the band. So, Leo suddenly decides to vanish. Meanwhile, George keeps confronting Alan for insulting Charlize. Instead of accepting his mistake, Alan blames Charlize for potentially breaking their band.

When the bandmates are away, Alan calls Melena to discuss the plans to perform together. After all, this is why Alan wanted to form the band again: to be with Melena. However, Melena calls out Alan’s problematic behavior and refuses to collaborate with him. Nevertheless, since Leo departs from the band, Alan hires Jay (German Bracco), their die-hard fan, who knows the lyrics to all their songs. Meanwhile, George comes out to them as gender fluid and thanks Charlize for her support.

The band eventually goes on a TV gossip show to discuss the future of their band.  Suddenly, the show host brings Los Saobrigenes members, followed by Melena, to join them. So, Alan has another public meltdown. Melena tells Masiosare to apologize to Alan for creating this mess. On the other hand, she has an affair with Number Juan. That night, while making out, Number Juan reveals that he is not Puerto Rican as he once claimed to be. He lied so that he could join the boy band. Now, he wants to be in a relationship with her. However, Melena refuses to run away with him since she would need to sacrifice her business empire to do so.

Technoboys (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

After the talk show fiasco, Alan joins Jay at a bar to have drinks together. While Alan pours his heart out, they also get high. Jay keeps validating Alan’s questionable behavior. Soon, Alan finds an old video of his embarrassing performance with Melena online. He calls her to speak about it. They argue but find no common ground. While driving back with Jay, Alan notices Melena and NJ passing by together in a car. Alan gets furious and starts following her. Suddenly, Jay swerves Alan’s steering wheel and crashes their car into hers. Instead of accepting the responsibility, Jay tells Alan to drive away.

Alan refuses to hit and run. Jay punches him and drives away by himself. He claims that would save the band from any humiliation. However, a message at the back of Alan’s car reveals his identity to the press. Later, Melena gets emotional in front of the press and calls out Alan’s white male privilege. Since the press is looking for the band’s response, the band members put on disguises and head to Alan’s house. There, they confront Alan for always belittling and insulting them for their looks, ailment, or gender identity. The members expect him to be sensitive toward other people’s emotions and not act selfishly.

Does the ‘Technoboys’ band reunite for good?

After the accident, Jay arrives at the hospital to choke NJ to death. Melena arrives there just in time and saves NJ’s life. After getting arrested, Jay claims Alan forced him to kill NJ. So, Alan decides to call Melena to clear the air. He reveals he did mean to upload their embarrassing video but did not do so. Suddenly, Melena realizes Masiosare posted the video to sabotage her reunion with Alan or his band for his personal gain. As the band members grow closer, Leo appears in their lives and helps them confess their mistakes. Soon, Melena and NJ join them.

Leo makes them drink a potion that makes them vomit and get high. At the same time, it leads them to accept their flaws and be vulnerable. Alan apologizes to Melena and NJ for his past mess-ups. Freddy apologizes to Charlize for his conservative attitude and admits his love for her, citing a past incident.

Then, the band’s co-manager, Yanetin (Monica Del Carmen) confronts Melena for appropriating her ethnic identity with tanned skin and braided hair, while being a white person. Instead of mudslinging, Yanetin expects Melena to introspect and stop pretending to be someone she is not. Although Yanetin gives her a reality check, Melena mistakes it as a way to proclaim her white identity without realizing its stupidity. Band members quickly stop Melena from embarrassing herself.

What lies in the band’s future?

Juan goes on live television to reveal Alan’s innocence in the case against NJ. He admits Masiosare forced him to do everything he did. So, the police start looking for Masiosare and get into a cat-and-mouse chase. In the end, Masiosare drives his car off a cliff. At the end of “Technoboys,” we see the band reunite, performing with Melena and NJ. They all get over their anxieties, embrace their identities, and rejoice with a possible tour deal.
