“Temurun” is a psychological horror film directed by Inarah Syarafina. The story revolves around a dysfunctional family—Dewi, Sena, and their overly suspicious mother. Burdened by their mother’s constant anxiety, Dewi and Sena take on extra jobs to make ends meet. However, Sena’s mistake leads to a tragic accident, resulting in their mother’s death.
After years of absence, their estranged father, Agung, re-enters their lives as the only adult figure left to care for them. Moving in with Agung, they begin to experience unsettling events. Their paternal grandmother, Gayatri, openly favors Dewi, while Agung shows a strong preference for Sena. Both have hidden motives behind their favoritism. As Dewi struggles with PTSD from her mother’s death, Gayatri seizes the opportunity to manipulate her, using Dewi’s trauma to fulfill her own twisted desires.

Temurun (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
“Temurun” opens with a young Gayatri running away from someone or something. On her hand, Gayatri has an incision. Something lurks in the room when Gayatri hides under the bed. As Gayatri comes out from under the bed, a black hand grabs Gayatri and drags her away. At present, Dewi is home and finds her mother vehement. The mother asks Dewi to wear a necklace for protection, and eventually, Dewi calms her mother down. Meanwhile, Sena, Dewi’s brother, has sex with a politician’s wife. It seems Sena is irresponsible, and Dewi takes on many jobs and cares for her mother while Sena gets into trouble.
That night, Dewi wakes up to find her mother chewing on Jujube leaves, still panicked. Two goons enter the house the following night and torture Dewi to reveal where Sena is. In the meantime, Dewi’s mother attacks one of the goons, making them angry. In anger, the goons reveal that Sena has slept with the politician’s wife. Someone orders the goons to get rid of Dewi and her mother. When Dewi’s mother defends herself, the goon kills her. After all this, Dewi is exhausted as she realizes her mother died because of Sena.
Why does Dewi not want to leave with Agung?
As Dewi goes through her mother’s belongings, she finds a tape recorder with some cassettes and pictures. Slowly, Dewi starts to hallucinate that her mother is in front of her. Amidst all this, Agung (Dewi and Sena’s father) comes home to take the kids with him. After being alone, Dewi is not interested in leaving with Agung. That night, Dewi has a nightmare involving her mother. Using this opportunity, Sena convinces Dewi to go with Agung. On their way, Sena notices two men hanging from a tree. Immediately, Sena realizes Agung probably has something to do with that, as they are probably the same people who killed his mother.
When the kids arrive at the house, Esti greets them and shows them to their room. Inside, they meet their grandmother, Gayatri. Later, Gayatri informs Dewi that traditions are passed down from one woman to another in this family, and a woman leads the family line. The only hope Gayatri has is to see Dewi take over the company eventually. After dinner, Sena stumbles into a room with a scary bang from a closet. Pictures of his ancestors, especially the women, are also on a wall. Before Sena can investigate, Esti warns Sena never to enter Gayatri’s private chamber. Meanwhile, Dewi is hallucinating about her mother.
Why is Esti worried about Dewi?
The family owns a slaughterhouse, and Gayatri has brought her grandkids, Sena and Dewi, to show them around. After Dewi’s mother’s death, Dewi feels sick watching blood and cutting off the flesh. So Gayatri introduces Dewi to Jaka, who oversees the slaughterhouse administration. Something is confusing for Dewi as she looks at the company profile. The document states that Gayatri has been running the slaughterhouse since 1935, meaning Gayatri is over 100 years old. When Dewi questions Jaka about it, Jaka says there is no error. That night, Sena overhears Gayatri saying she is ill and needs to pass on the inheritance.
When Sena repeats the same to Dewi, Dewi is not surprised or thinks anything is suspicious, as old people will think of these things. Unfortunately, Dewi still sees disfigured apparitions of her mother and gets scared. Later in the night, Dewi asks Esti about Gayatri’s age, so Esti tells Dewi that many people in the company are jealous of Gayatri’s success. If Dewi has anything to ask, she needs to talk to Gayatri. This question worries Esti, and she urges Gayatri to move as soon as possible, as Jaka and Agung have started to progress.
Why does Sena kill Jaka?
The next night, Gayatri calls Dewi to chat. Since Dewi likes music, and Gayatri does too, they bond over it. Soon, Gayatri teaches Dewi how to dance, and suddenly, Gayatri faints. Now Esti tells Dewi that Gayatri has chronic anemia and should not be doing any physical activities. At the same time, Sena sees a burglar at home and informs Agung, who asks Sena to ignore and rest. While Gayatri rests, Agung tells Jaka that he needs to kill his mother as there is a demon inside her. The demon inside Gayatri is trying to find a new host, and that host will be Dewi. With a heavy heart, Agung reaches his mother’s bed to stab her, but before Agung can do that, Esti stabs Agung.
Now, Agung’s dead body is hanged in the slaughterhouse, and all the employees think it is Jaka as he is the one near the body. After lunch, Sena tells Dewi they should leave the place, but Dewi is unwilling to leave. As they continue to argue, Dewi mentions that her mother died because of Sena. Infuriated, Sena slaps Dewi. Still, Sena is upset, and Esti tells Sena that Jaka is the one who killed Agung. Unfortunately, Dewi’s hallucinations about her mother are getting stronger. When Sena receives a message from Jaka to meet him in the slaughterhouse, Sena rushes to Jaka immediately. At the slaughterhouse, Sena does not allow Jaka to say anything and immediately attacks. As Jaka takes his last breath, he asks Sena to check the car’s trunk.

Will the demon find a new host?
In the car, Sena finds a book about inheritance rituals. Meanwhile, Gayatri promises Dewi that she will help Dewi go to her mother. To do that, Gayatri first makes an incision on her hand and asks Dewi to follow. Now, they clasp their hands, making a promise. At the same time, Sena reads about the ritual and realizes he will be sacrificed, and Dewi will become the host. Furthermore, Sena learns that Esti is a prophet of this cult. Reading that, Sena knows he has to take Dewi out of there, so he looks for Dewi in the house. When Sena finds Dewi, she is intoxicated or in a trance-like state.
So Sena carries Dewi out, but the car keys are missing. From behind, Esti hits Sena, so they can’t escape. In the next scene, we see the cult members in white, along with Dewi on the chair. Sadly, Dewi is not concisous; Sena is tied to a chair opposite Dewi. The ritual begins, and Esti slits Sena’s throat and makes Dewi drink his blood. Immediately, Dewi can see her mother, and as her mother gets closer, the mother turns into a demon. Now, Dewi screams, and the demon enters Dewi through her eyes and mouth.
In the last scene, the demon successfully enters Dewi, meaning she is the new head of the family and company. Since she was in a trance, Dewi probably will not remember anything that happened. The only person who can answer Dewi’s questions will be Esti, who will fabricate the truth. It seems Esti is running a cult, and the primary ritual of the cult is to do inheritance rituals. The older Gayatri is the same one we see at the film’s beginning. We get a brief glimpse of how the demon took over Gayatri. Once Dewi gets old, she will surely go looking for a host, and the cycle will repeat unless someone kills Dewi and ends the cycle.
