Los Iniciados begins with journalist Frank Molina being called to report yet another death by suicide. It is not conventional suicide, though. The country has run out of potable water. Even though it rains half the time, the rainwater has become acidic and toxic for human consumption. Still, the poor in the Kasbah region are forced to drink it out of thirst. Molina inspects a tent with a young couple on the brink of collapse after having drunk the toxic water. Molina was a well-respected journalist a few years ago.
But he has fallen from grace and has become an alcoholic, working for The Evening Chronicle. The city, and specifically the Kasbah region, has suffered many unexplained disappearances that young journalist Monica Perea is investigating. Monica is Molina’s former student from the university and has been publishing revelatory stuff under her blog Kasbah Titles. She asks Molina for his help to guide her through this process. Even though Monica seems to have some evidence and inkling about who is behind these disappearances, she needs someone like Molina to make the story as impactful as possible.
Monica’s best friend, Gaby, is an underground MMA fighter with the stage name Lady Massacre. Gaby is having an affair with the city’s mayor, Ignacio Pombo. His vision for the renovation plans of Kasbah has made him very popular with the residents of the area. He does have honest intentions to change the living conditions of the people. But there is an underlying ulterior cause that keeps pulling him back.
The same night that Monica asked for Molina’s help, someone came into her apartment. A struggle ensued between them, and Monica was thrown outside the window of her apartment on the third floor to her death. Although it was presumed to be a suicide initially, the perspective was completely changed when Molina discovers that Monica’s body is missing from the morgue. How was it possible that it didn’t make it for a post-mortem?
He confirms the records at the morgue and heads over to talk to Officer Al Magro, who is his acquaintance on the police force. Instead of being forthcoming, Al Magro warns Molina not to stick his neck to things that do not concern him, or else he will end up like Monica. This is by far the biggest indication to the journalist that he must fight the formidable nexus of the police force and whoever is making people disappear. Ignacio’s wife, Veronica, has no clue that he is having an affair. Gaby meets with the Mayor asking for help in this matter. But Ignacio cannot do anything himself and has to rely on the police to take Gaby’s request further.
While going over her memories with Monica at her now deserted apartment, Gaby shockingly discovers a bloody knife under a table. This confirms her theory that Monica was murdered and didn’t commit suicide. She invites Molina to the flat and shares her findings with him. Molina is also convinced that Monica was murdered and sets out to find out the people responsible.
Molina begins his investigation by visiting Father Lazaro, who lives in the Kasbah region and worked closely with Monica in the past few months.
She was investigating disappearances and met him in this regard. Next, Molina gets a tip that Leonidas Chamorro, Yara’s brother, also disappeared under mysterious circumstances. He goes to ask her what happened to him. Leo had a foundry in the Kasbah. They threatened him to sell it. He kept saying no. And then, one day, he disappeared. The foundry is now completely abandoned.

Molina’s inquiries have landed him in trouble. Someone that night tries to kill him. Even though he could have easily killed Molina, the assassin left him as a warning sign to stay away. Molina also learns of Evedio Torres, who was also killed like Leo. Whoever killed him is now holding more properties under his name. Molina is shocked to discover that multiple properties are being held under the names of people like Evedio in the Kasbah region, all around the Church. The pattern of disappearances on the map resembles the Snake’s Nest, a historical artifact of significant value.
What is the Snake’s Nest?
Molina follows Lazaro one night into an underground space, where he discovers a gushing source of water. The Snake’s Nest is the only source of potable water in the city. It has been untouched by man and is also believed to have healing properties. Molina suspects that someone knows about this nest and is trying to take all the properties around it in the neighborhood to eventually land on it. Monica’s apartment was just a couple of blocks away from the nest, and Molina believed that whoever was behind this would come for this soon.
Who is behind all the disappearances in Kasbah?
Molina continues his investigation. He visits Leo’s foundry and finds a medallion that she was seen wearing buried in the furnace. Suddenly, he notices the same man who tried to kill him has thrown another body into the furnace. The real culprit is Ignacio’s father, the town’s former Mayor. Augusto Pombo’s body is rotting due to a lack of water. He is undergoing treatment but is in dire need of clean, potable water. That is why he is getting the people who own properties around the nest executed. Molina was correct in asserting that the entire water is underground.
That is what Ignocio’s father is after. He wants to start a renovation project at the Kasbah neighborhood’s surface and take everything underground. He wants to blackmail Ignacio with photos of him with Gaby to add the necessary amendments to the new law that would allow Ignacio’s father to do what he wants. The added section would privatize the underground area, thus allowing him to take full control of it and the Snake’s Nest.
How does Molina trap Augusto and Iganacio?
Molina records Mayor’s father confessing on tape his devious plan. Molina causes a scene at the function where all congratulate Ignacio for presenting his grand vision for Kasbah. The Mayor’s men take him to the furnace. Ignacio picks up his recorder and listens to the entire conversation. Augusto also asks Ignacio to kill Gaby since she knows everything and endangers his campaign. But he is too madly in love with her to do so. Instead, Ignacio tries to convince Gaby to remain quiet for now, but she doesn’t listen to him. Molina pushes the killer into the furnace with him.
They struggle with each other, but Molina manages to get out. The assassin is burned in the furnace-like he disposed of so many people before. When Gaby refuses to listen to Ignacio’s pleas, he points a gun at her. They are involved in a struggle as Ignacio is on top of Gaby and chokes her. She grabs ahold of Monica’s paper cutter and stabs him. He succumbs to his injury, and Gaby falls unconscious due to asphyxia. But she is still alive. Molina and Gaby both make it out of the situation.
The former publishes the report in the paper with all evidence linking August to the killings. The police soon arrest the former Mayor, and his devious plan of taking the Nest all to himself fails. Molina seems to have found his calling once again and is on a path of rehabilitation.
