In the series “Three Women,” based on the book of the same name, Gia, a writer facing a dire situation with her publishers threatening to sue, desperately needs a compelling story. Her publishers suggest she consult Gay Talese for inspiration, but his controversial advice to pursue relationships with married men prompts Gia to forge her own path. Instead, she chooses to explore themes of women, sex, and love. As Gia interviews three distinct women—Lina, Maggie, and Sloane—she embarks on a profound journey of self-discovery.

The series delves deeply into Lina’s life, a married housewife who yearns for affection and attention from a husband who remains emotionally distant. Then there’s Sloane, who is not only stunning but also adept at getting what she desires, though her open marriage brings its own complexities. Lastly, Maggie is embroiled in a legal battle against her English teacher, Aaron, over a troubling and inappropriate relationship. “Three Women” explores the intricate dynamics of love, desire, and personal growth through these narratives.

Three Women (2023) Episode 1 Recap:

The first episode of “Three Women” opens with Gia visiting Professor Gay Talese to get ideas for a book. The first draft of Gia’s book was rejected, and Gia is writing about human copulation. Professor Talese asks Gia to sleep with married men to get inspiration for the book. The suggestion is to sleep with men from the US countryside, as that’s where Gia will find her stories.

The professor is taking the direction of understanding why married men are okay to cheat. However, Gia finds the direction of her book through the stories of three women: Maggie, Sloane, and Lina. One thing Talese got right was to find stories in the countryside. Soon, Gia completes her book without having to sleep with any married men.

What does Lina want from a man?

In Lina’s case, Gia describes Lina as someone who still moves like a teenager who is excited, nervous, and guarded. All Lina has ever wanted was to be in love, so she takes hours to perfect every movement to approach her husband. The one single desire that Lina wants is to kiss a man who wants to kiss her back.

Like every couple, Lina and her husband, Ed, have marital problems. They seek help from a priest at the church. The priest asks Ed to get rid of his itchy blanket as Lina finds it uncomfortable. Next, the priest expects Lina to sacrifice her desire to be kissed by her husband, as Ed does not like to be intimate with Lina. Along with intimacy issues with Ed, Lina has constant joint pains in her hands.

At this time, Lina runs into her friend, who recommends Dr. Henry, an Indian doctor who is supposed to be very good. Desperate to find a solution, Lina visits Dr. Henry. At Dr. Henry’s office, he diagnoses Lina with endometriosis and fibromyalgia. At this moment, Dr. Henry seems to hear everything Lina has to say about her issues, which is a massive relief for her. The Doctor also understands that many of Lina’s problems are connected to mental health. During Lina’s second visit to Dr. Henry’s clinic, Dr. Henry tells Lina that the cure for many ailments is a good orgasm.

What is Sloane’s story?

Unlike Lina, Sloane has it all: gorgeous looks, money, and an environment that is quite open to what others consider taboo. A secret dimension of Sloane’s open marriage is that the couple frequently invites a third person into their intimate encounters, adding a unique twist to their unconventional relationship. This was solely Sloane’s desire. However, this sort of arrangement has certain said and unsaid rules. For instance, it is an unspoken rule that the man Sloane chooses should not be in any way better than her husband, Richard. The couple have a pool at their house, and Sloane seems to hate pools. The couple now host a party where the oysters are of low quality.

At this party, Sloane flirts with a man who Richard approves. Another party is underway, so Sloane is hunting for someone who can provide good oysters. Sloane meets Will, who gives her some of the best-tasting oysters. So Sloane hires Will for the upcoming party. Sadly, Sloane is attracted to Will, but she knows Richard will never be okay with Will. After the party, Will arrives to collect the cheque from Sloane. As they converse, Will makes Sloane realize there is more to life than work and that if he had a pool like hers, he would spend every night in it.

What is Maggie’s relationship with Aaron?

Like Sloane, Maggie is a beautiful woman but does not come from money. Now, Maggie works as a waitress, dropping out of school. While her school peers attend university, Maggie works hard to make some money. That night on the news, Maggie sees her former English Teacher, Aaron. Immediately, Maggie is reminded of the relationship they had when Maggie was attending school. We learn through Gia’s narration that Maggie and Aaron would talk on the phone for hours at night. One night, Maggie leaves a card at Aaron’s door congratulating him for getting the Best Teacher award.

Meanwhile, Maggie’s friends Jordan and Billie help Maggie realize that her relationship with Aaron is inappropriate. Furthermore, Jordan also reminds Maggie that if Aaron did cheat on his wife with Maggie, he could do the same with another girl. So Jordan urges Maggie to do something about it. After thinking long and hard, Maggie decides to write an email to Aaron asking for an explanation. Meanwhile, Sloane enjoys swimming in her pool at night, probably for the first time. On the other hand, Lina uses a vibrator to have an orgasm.

Three Women (2023) Episode 2 Recap:

The second episode opens with Lina’s story. At school, Lina had her first true love. Soon, Lina started dating Aidan. As an adult, Lina thinks of Aidan when she sees his Facebook profile. As Lina waits in the school parking lot, she looks at Aidan’s picture and masturbates. Once Lina is home, the same continues until one of Lina’s kids calls out to Lina. Suddenly, Lina feels like she is having a heart attack and calls 911. Unfortunately, Ed apologizes to the cops as it’s a false alarm by a frazzled housewife. When Lina realizes Ed does not care about her, she talks to Dr. Henry about the situation. So Dr. Henry recommends Lina join a women’s group.

Until now, Lina cared only about what Ed thought, so she didn’t live her life to the fullest. Now, Lina has had enough and decides to go ahead and do what she wants. In the first woman’s group session, Lina meets Gia, and she tells the group that she will leave Ed in 17 days if Ed does not touch her within that time. It is Lina’s friend’s bachelorette, and Ed makes a fuss about leaving the kids with him. At the bachelorette, Lina lets loose and dances like there is no tomorrow. Throughout the day, Lina has been texting Aidan. When Lina is in her room, Aidan stops by. The chemistry still exists, and Lina and Aidan sleep together. For the first time in a very long time, Lina is excited.

Three Women (2023) Episode 3 Recap:

The episode begins with a young Sloane getting told off by her mother for dancing in her room. Now, Sloane is meeting her mother for lunch. On the way, Sloane runs into Will and learns he also builds boats. At the restaurant, it is obvious Sloane has mommy issues, as her mother seems to control everything. Another problem is that Sloane’s mother does not respect Sloane’s career. At home, Sloane learns that her mother went behind her back to take Sophie (Sloane’s daughter) out for ice cream. Later, Sloane takes a miniature boat for Will to fix. As they converse, Will recommends a different florist for Sloane’s events.

Anytime Sloane brings up Will, Richard seems to get uncomfortable. As per Will’s suggestion, Sloane meets the florist Lily. Immediately, Sloane hires Lily, and as they talk, Sloane learns that Lily and Will are dating. Unfortunately, Sloane wants to sleep with Will, but now Lily is the hurdle. Sloane visits Will’s boat to bring the mini boat back that night. However, they are both attracted to each other and almost kiss. The next day, Sloane tells Richard that she wants to sleep with Will. However, Richard is unwilling to let Sloane sleep with Will.

Later, Richard invited Isaac and Kira for dinner, and a couple swap. However, Sloane is not interested. Nevertheless, she eventually caves in. Things get messy as Sloane realizes Isaac is not using a condom. When Sloane lashes out for not listening to her gut feeling, Richards’s real emotions come through. Richard expresses how difficult it is for him to watch another man have sex with Sloane.

During a family get-together, Sloane’s family tease her about everything while they commend Richard. The whole thing is traumatic for Sloane. To drown her sorrows, Sloane binge-eats cakes and throws up. Later, Sloane visits Will, and he has an orgasm. When Sloane comes home, she lies to Richard first but eventually says she ran into Will, and nothing happened. The only thing Richard cannot tolerate is Sloane lying.

Three Women (2023) Episode 4 Recap:

The episode begins with a note on Maggie Wilkins’s case. In this case, Maggie gives her testimony against her former English teacher, Aaron Knodel, who had an inappropriate relationship with Maggie. Aaron was acquitted of three of the five charges against him. The series disclaims that there are many sides to a story, and this is Maggie’s story. Once Maggie sent Aaron the email, she has been waiting for a response.

All Maggie hopes for is either an apology from Aaron or to know that what they have isn’t a lie. After chatting with her therapist, Maggie decides to go to the police station. Before that, Maggie tells her parents what transpired between Aaron and herself. At the police station, Maggie narrates her story. The story starts in Hawaii when Maggie visited her sister for summer break. During her stay, Maggie joined her brother-in-law at a Toga party.

At the party, Maggie met Mateo, who offered to take Maggie around if she was interested. The next day, Mateo asked Maggie if she was free to go on a ride. At first, Maggie’s sister is unwilling to send Maggie alone with Mateo. However, Maggie’s brother-in-law convinces Maggie’s sister, saying it is okay. So Maggie headed out, and after a day at the waterfall, Mateo returned Maggie home. With Maggie’s consent, Mateo and Maggie had sex.

When Mateo brought Maggie home, Maggie’s brother-in-law caught Maggie kissing Mateo. This infuriated Maggie’s brother-in-law. The situation worsened since Mateo is over 30 years old, and Maggie is just 16. Back home, the whole school talked about Maggie’s affair in Hawaii. During this time, Aaron came across as Maggie’s guardian angel, trying to help her through difficult times.

Things started getting inappropriate during Christmas break as Aaron texted Maggie, saying he has feelings for her. From texts, late-night calls, and random meet-ups, it escalates to Aaron inviting Maggie home when his wife was out of town. This was when Maggie and Aaron’s relationship got physical.

Unfortunately, Maggie has no text messages on her phone, as Aaron had asked her to delete them. Furthermore, Aaron was in control of the whole relationship. At present, Maggie feels better and has sent her application for college in social work. The good news for Maggie is that felony charges against Aaron have been filed. Maggie’s dad takes Maggie to the ice rink to help Maggie feel like a child again, as she was a terrific ice skater as a child.

The final episode begins with Gia at the hospital about to deliver her baby. At this moment, Gia thinks about the time her father died. Just before Gia’s father met with an accident, he called Gia, but Gia was too busy to answer his call. It took many years for Gia to even listen to the voicemail. Meanwhile, Maggie is at her father’s grave, venting to him about the court’s verdict.

Suddenly, Maggie’s brother David comes running as Maggie’s therapist asks the family not to leave her alone. As they talk, Maggie gets the idea that she should not keep quiet about what she went through. During this time, Gia has already reached out to Maggie for an interview, but Maggie has not responded yet. Back to Gia, she gave birth to a baby girl, and the doctor insisted on making an appointment to get her lungs checked.

From the hospital, Sloane drives Gia and her baby girl home. As they arrive, they see Jack. However, Gia wants to run away, but Sloane urges Gia to get out and talk to Jack. When Jack sees Gia, he is furious for the first time. Fortunately, Sloane calms Jack down, asking him not to scare his daughter. Inside the house, Gia, Jack, and their daughter, who they name Fox, spend time together as a family.

Since Jack knows Gia’s fears, he promises that no one will die, so Gia should stop running away. In Sloane’s case, Sloane confronts her mother for the first time, holding her accountable for the choices and circumstances that have shaped Sloane’s current life. Sloane still lives in the barn but drops by the house to get some stuff. There, Sloane bumps into Richard and begs him to let her back in.

Still hurting from everything, Richard calls Sloane a ‘slut’ taking Sloane aback. It is close to Sophie’s birthday, so Sloane drops by a cake shop, where she runs into Lily. Lily is pregnant and tells Sloane that she is telling everybody about what kind of a person Sloane is. Lily also calls Sloane a ‘slut.’

When Sloane hears this, she tells Lily that she can hate Sloane as much as she wants, but women should stop calling each other sluts. Meanwhile, Lina is distracted and waits for Aidan’s messages. However, Lina’s son is using the washroom in the park and suddenly calls out to Lina. Sadly, Ryan (Lina’s son) has fallen inside the washroom pit covered in shit. Three Women (2024) Finale Episode 10 Ending Explained:

Will Gia complete the book?

Lina takes Ryan and meets Aidan. Even though Lina wants more from Aidan, she knows it isn’t going to happen. So Lina breaks it off with Aidan. As Maggie has decided not to keep quiet, she starts protesting in front of the high school along with her brother David. The reality hits Maggie hard as she realizes nobody believes Maggie’s story, including her brother David.

Meanwhile, Sloane has had enough and makes up with her husband, Richard, and they both apologize to each other. They continue to spend quality family time. It’s time for Gia to meet Maggie, so she leaves, taking Fox with her. Once again, Gia leaves without informing Jack. When Gia stops by to say goodbye to Sloane, Sloane tries to stop Gia from leaving without Jack, but Gia is adamant. As Jack comes home, he realizes Gia is gone and decides to call the cops.

Finally, Gia meets Maggie and tells her that she believes what Maggie went through. So, Maggie permits Gia to write her story. By the end of her journey, thanks to the invaluable insights and support from the countless women she has interviewed, Gia finally undergoes a scan to address her cancer. Gia chose the three women because they represent the broader spectrum of women’s experiences, illustrating that their stories are interconnected and reflect a collective journey. In the end, whether one admits to it or not, everyone wants to be loved. In the last scene, we see Maggie and her mother flying to New York for the Tonight Show. On the flight, Maggie meets a young man who is impressed to be seated next to a TV star.

Ultimately, seeing Maggie attend the Tonight Show implies that the book is doing well. However, we are unsure of what happened to Gia, whether she is alive or dead. We also don’t know what happened to Jack. Gia started in desperation to find stories and comfort the women in her stories, but a lot of the time, these women helped Gia in her own life. Gia’s personal story itself is complicated as Jack seems to be a perfect guy, but Gia has been hurt by life so much that she is incapable of letting good things get too close to her.

In Lina’s case, she does get what she wants in terms of a physical relationship but goes through heartbreak when it comes to love. Despite that, Lina is brave enough to end things with Aidan as she knows she deserves better. In Sloane’s case, she is a powerful woman who gets what she wants, but she also has her ups and downs in a relationship. Sloane’s story ends on a more positive note. Unfortunately, Maggie does not get justice or an apology from Aaron. However, so many people will hear Maggie’s story and be inspired.

Three Women (2024) Review:

“Three Women” tells the story of female sexuality and desire, among other things. As shown at the beginning of the series, people are used to hearing about male sexual desires and the emotions they go through. This series takes on a woman’s perspective, filled with emotions and hardships. Fortunately, the series avoids exaggeratedly portraying the women.

Instead, it presents their stories with raw authenticity. In Maggie’s case, given the court proceedings, the series consistently emphasizes that there are multiple perspectives, with the narrative reflecting Maggie’s personal viewpoint. The show gives equal weight to the smallest and grandest desires, capturing their significance with equal depth.

We see Lina making life decisions driven by trauma. As a high school student, she was raped and hurt by the one she loved. As an adult, her husband doesn’t even touch Lina. When Lina gets back with her married old flame, Lina enjoys having sex with him, but emotionally, she is a wreck.

Through Lina’s story, the series poignantly illustrates that while everyone experiences their own traumas and pain, each person has the power to choose how they confront and handle their struggles. The series is audacious in its storytelling, unflinchingly presenting sex scenes and raw narratives. The performances are exceptional, particularly by the actors portraying Lina and Sloane, who skillfully bring their contrasting personalities to life with remarkable depth and nuance.

The series also challenges the stereotypes of female sexuality. Especially with Sloane, as she has a strong desire to be in an open marriage, yet that does not change the fact that she loves her husband dearly. Maggie’s story is particularly empowering, highlighting the formidable challenge of navigating a court case where women often face insinuations of wrongdoing.

Despite losing the case, Maggie’s journey delivers a powerful and inspirational message for women to assert their rights and stand up for themselves. Conversely, the series is slow-paced, with some episodes dedicating significant time to explicit scenes. While the storytelling is non-linear, it manages to avoid becoming overly confusing, maintaining a straightforward narrative through its complexities.

In some instances, the interactions between Gia and the main characters feel uneven, with limited insight into Maggie’s relationship with Gia compared to Lina’s more developed connection. While Lina receives ample screen time to build her bond with Gia, Maggie’s presence is somewhat overshadowed, with much of her storyline focusing on the court case and its background.

Despite these disparities, the series excels at addressing complex themes surrounding female sexuality and desire. It fosters open dialogue, encouraging viewers to see emotions, desires, and needs as nuanced and multifaceted rather than simply black and white.
