Time Lapse (2015) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
As mentioned above, the film centers on three friends: Callie, Finn, and Jasper. Finn is an aspiring painter who spends his days creating portraits. But right now, he’s stuck in a creative block. Callie is dating Finn. Jasper is the quirky one who works as a bartender at a local bar. One day, Finn stumbles upon a storage door with multiple locks. It immediately gives off the idea that whatever’s locked behind it is something no one wants out. Things get interesting when, while checking on a neighbor, Henry, who hasn’t been seen in weeks, the trio discovers a room filled with hundreds of photos of themselves. Along with the photos, they find a strange machine that looks like a camera bolted to the floor.
Little do they know, this mysterious device is about to turn their lives upside down in ways they can’t even imagine. The strange machine the group finds in the old man’s house is definitely a camera. However, it’s not your typical point-and-shoot. Instead of capturing the present, this camera spits out pictures showing what’s going to happen 24 hours in the future. In other words, this thing predicts the future. Jasper initially thinks it’s a joke or some elaborate prank, but the hundreds of photos plastered on the walls confirm their suspicions. They also find in Henry’s journal that no matter how hard you try, you can’t change what’s destined to happen. According to the diary, Mr. Henry Bezzerides, the previous owner, tried to change the future and ended up dead. Also, remember that iron door in the basement? It is hiding the charred corpse of Mr. Bezzerides.
How does Finn, Callie & Jasper use the time machine?
Finn decides it’s too much for them to handle and suggests calling the police to let the professionals deal with it. Jasper, on the other hand, sees an opportunity to make a lot of money with the camera. When Finn doesn’t agree, Jasper reluctantly agrees to call the police tomorrow and report the camera and the charred body in the storage unit. However, the photo taken by the camera that night convinces Finn that keeping the camera a secret is in their best interest.
Finn figures he can use the camera to create the best portraits, saying, “I won’t have to deal with creative block ever again.” For safety reasons, they decide to follow whatever is depicted in the photographs, fearing that meddling with the timeline might cause them to cease to exist. In the weeks that follow, everyone starts using the camera to get exactly what they want. Finn copies the paintings shown in the photographs, feeling good about beating his creative block. Jasper, meanwhile, uses the camera to predict race results and rakes in thousands of dollars.
How does the time machine start to ruin everyone’s life?
However, not everything goes as planned. Finn, Jasper, and Callie learn this the hard way. One of the photos shows Jasper and Callie kissing, and Finn reluctantly allows it to keep the timeline intact. However, when the kiss lingers a bit too long, Finn lashes out in anger. The next photo reveals Ivan, Jasper’s bookie, in Finn’s apartment. Trying to avoid this, Jasper calls his bookie the next day, saying he’s not placing any bets. This leads Ivan to drive to the apartment and discover the reason why Finn never loses any bets.
From then on, Ivan forces the group to take photos every day so he can manipulate bets and get rich. Jasper demands 50% of the winnings, but Ivan, a violent man who is always surrounded by his bulky goons, only agrees to give him 5%. With no choice, Jasper, Finn, and Callie have to say yes to their demands. The next photo shows a skull and bones painting, which Jasper takes as a warning, giving them a chance to prepare. Unfortunately, things spiral out of control, and Jasper ends up having to kill both Ivan and Marcus.
Why did Callie kill Jasper?
One day, a woman named Dr. Hideker arrives looking for Henry, a colleague of hers. Finn and Jasper try to lie and say that Henry has moved out and no longer lives across the hall, but she doesn’t buy it. Hideker quickly figures out that Henry is dead. After a bit of chit-chat, Jasper learns from her that the camera can be tweaked to take pictures at any time of day or night. Also, it is revealed that Henry died because of tripping and losing his balance, not because he was trying to change the future.
However, when the woman admits she doesn’t know how to change the camera settings, Jasper, who’s clearly lost his mind, shoots her dead. Finn realizes Jasper is too far gone to be reasoned with. Desperate, he tries to strike a deal. Finn asks Jasper to let him and Callie walk away with some money, but when Jasper tries to kill Finn, Callie steps in and smashes Jasper’s head with a showpiece, ending his madness for good.
Time Lapse (2015) Movie Ending Explained:
Is Callie able to change her future?
No matter what you do, you can’t change your or anyone else’s future. That’s the core message of the film. In the final minutes, it’s revealed that the camera snaps photos twice a day—one at 8 a.m. and another at night. But only Callie knew about the morning pictures. All this time, she was using those secret snapshots to improve her relationship with Finn. In other words, Callie was in on the camera’s secret long before Jasper and Finn figured it out.
This twist means Callie and Jasper’s kiss and intimate moment on the couch weren’t just for the sake of keeping the timeline intact—that actually happened a month ago. Callie has been wrestling with guilt ever since and has been trying to set things right. Feeling utterly betrayed, Finn decides to destroy the machine, but Callie kills him, thinking she can always use the time machine to rewrite the future.
Afterward, Callie’s attempts to alter the future hit a snag. As she leaves a note on the window for her past self to find, hoping to change the course of events, she’s interrupted by Joe. He arrives looking for Finn because of a message about Finn leaving town soon. The film concludes with the note that Callie carefully placed on the wall, falling to the ground before the camera can capture it. This detail means Callie’s past self won’t see the message, Finn remains deceased, and the timeline remains unchanged. So, in a nutshell, Henry’s warning was true all along. No matter how hard you try, the future remains the same.
