Trouble (Strul, 2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Netflix’s “Trouble” (Strul, 2024) is a Swedish crime comedy film that follows an electronics salesman trying to prove his innocence after being convicted for a crime he did not commit.

What happens in ‘Trouble’ (Strul, 2024) on Netflix?

“Trouble” on Netflix follows Conny (Filip Berg), a divorced man in his thirties who is working as a salesman at an electronics chain. His boss does not value him and assigns him menial tasks. Conny only looks forward to his weekly meetings with his daughter Julia. He shares Julia’s custody with her mother, Ayla (Shirin Golchin), now married to a pilot named Tomas. Conny feels less of himself in front of Tomas, who can give Julia what he can’t. One day, at his sales job, Conny helps Diana (Amy Deasismont), a customer, to buy a noise-canceling headphone.

Conny reveals he uses the same headphones and recommends them. His boss notices that and assigns him another job. That evening, Conny needs to deliver a television set to a customer. He shows up at the customer, Mimmi’s house, to help calibrate the TV. While the customer steps out, her husband, Luca, walks in, followed by a masked figure. This masked person tracks the husband and kills him. At the time, Conny was wearing his noise-canceling headphones.

So, he could not hear the husband’s struggle for life. Conny walks out briefly after and notices the dead husband on the floor. The masked person beats Conny and flees the scene. Soon, the wife returns home to find her dead husband lying next to Conny with a weapon in hand. As a result, Conny gets arrested for killing the man.

Can Conny prove his innocence?

During the interrogation, Conny meets Diana, the customer he recently helped purchase a headphone. She is a junior investigator working under Officer Helena (Eva Melander) and Officer Jorma (Magnus Sundberg). Conny recounts the events from the customer’s house until the point he found the dead body. Suddenly, his legal counsel, Hasse (Måns Nathanaelson), shows up and takes charge of the situation. Still, Conny is detained for 18 years. Even a while later, the lawyer remains useless. Conny notices petty fights among the inmates but remains out of trouble.

Soon, Conny gets assigned to work at the jail’s laundry. When the guard steps out, two inmates walk into the room. Conny hides and eavesdrops on their conversation. He realizes that they are trying to escape the prison through a tunnel. Later, he finds the hole the inmates dug through the laundry room’s wall. He steps out and finds a bag of alternate clothes. After changing into them, he shows up outside Mimmi’s house and breaks in to find Luca’s phone. Suddenly, Mimmi shows up and notices him. Conny notes that he is innocent and mentions the masked person who was trying to take Luca’s phone before. Conny wants to find that phone to uncover the actual murderer. Mimmi agrees to help him.

After Conny leaves, Mimmi finds Luca’s phone hidden inside the house. Officer Helena shows up to speak with her as she plugs it into a charger. During their conversation, Mimmi sees the video on Luca’s phone. It proves that Helena is the masked murderer who killed Luca. It turns out that Helena is a corrupt officer involved in drug deals. Luca saw her walk into a parking lot after a drug deal and caught her on his phone camera. That’s why she followed him to his house and tried to snatch his phone. After killing him, she hid his phone and pretended it went missing.

At the department, Diana suspects they have wrongfully convicted Conny. However, Helena does not let her interrogate Conny. Meanwhile, Conny is forced to collaborate with two inmates to help with their prison break plan. They mistake Conny for an airplane pilot and seek his help. After fleeing prison with them, Conny briefly meets Mimmi. She reveals Helena is the masked murderer who killed Luca.

Eventually, while being chased by the cops, he gets shot and put in a hospital. There, Helena tries to drug him so he does not implicate her.  Moments later, Diana shows up at the hospital and saves Conny. Helena stages a scene to prove Diana is trying to kill her, but to no avail. Diana helps Conny escape. However, they are soon declared fugitives by the authorities.

Trouble (Strul, 2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Does Conny prove his innocence in Luca’s murder?

After fleeing the hospital, Conny tells Diana the truth about Luca’s death. They both recover the footage of Helena removing her mask in the parking lot where Luca noticed her. Since Conny integrated Luca’s phone with his new TV, he decides to use the same to prove his innocence. Along the way, Conny and Diana notice his lawyer, Hasse, entering a hotel with Helena. Conny realizes that Hasse has been working with Helena all this time for her drug deals. That’s why Hasse did not help him get out of prison. They carry the TV throughout the hotel, trying to convince the staff to plug it in somewhere, but to no avail.

Eventually, Conny’s fellow inmate, Musse (Joakim Sällquist), catches him inside the hotel. He shoots the television and threatens to kill Conny. Moments later, the cops show up and arrest him. Conny flees the scene with Diana and meets Hasse. However, the cops soon catch up to Diana and handcuff her. As it happens, Conny integrates the television with the hotel’s system and broadcasts the video on the screens of the entire hotel. While the cops arrest him, he soon gets released from prison. At the end of “Trouble,” Conny proves his innocence, gets out of prison, and gets into a relationship with Diana.

Trouble (Strul, 2024) Movie Review:

Jon Holmberg’s “Trouble” gets a few things right. This Swedish crime comedy follows Conny, a divorced home electronics salesman convicted of a murder he did not commit. The film primarily follows him trying to prove his innocence. After his lawyer proves himself useless, Conny takes matters into his own hands to find the necessary evidence. It’s a familiar crime drama set-up with a predictable outcome. Yet, it works mainly works because of its humor. Filip Berg’s straight-face, nonchalant portrayal of a man in trouble makes the situations effortlessly funnier.

Amy Deasismont brings a peppy energy to the equation. It works well for their chemistry, whether romantic or investigative. They make up an appealing pair that you will not get bored of. With their output, the film remains consistently breezy and engaging. Still, it comes with its share of flaws. Firstly, it introduces a few conflicts in Conny’s life but does not develop them. It shows Conny feeling less of himself in front of Tomas but never develops this narrative thread. Eventually, it becomes less about him trying to gain respect from his daughter and remains mainly about his quest to prove his innocence. Then, why include these motives in the script if you’ll never use them later?

Regardless, “Trouble” interweaves the storylines of corruption, romance, and crime with enough charm that you start to ignore its occasional flaws and loopholes.
