Lily Gladstone is unstoppable following her phenomenal performance in the 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon, which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award in the same category. Now, the actress has nabbed another exciting project. This time, she’ll star in “The Wedding Banquet,” a remake of the 1993 romantic comedy directed by Ang Lee. This remake will be helmed by filmmaker Andrew Ahn, while Gladstone will lead the cast along with Bowen Yang.

What can be expected from Andrew Ahn’s remake of The Wedding Banquet?

When a filmmaker decides to remake a film, he is entrusted with the responsibility of doing justice to the original. This time, filmmaker Andrew Ahn is in charge, having decided to remake The Wedding Banquet, originally directed and co-written by the world-renowned filmmaker Ang Lee. The film, released in the early 90s, was met with massive critical acclaim. It also won the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear in 1993 and was one of the most profitable movies of that year.  In an official statement, Lee celebrated the fact that this story is being revisited and shared his excitement to see Ahn’s vision of the modern classic: “It warms my heart to see how my film from so many years ago has inspired a new generation to reimagine a new and different version. I look forward to seeing what Andrew Ahn and his wonderful cast create.”

The film featured  Winston Chao,  Winston Chao, and Gua Ah-Leh in the lead roles.

As for Ahn’s film, the cast includes Lily Gladstone alongside Brown Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, who will play Gladstone’s romantic partner, as well as Joan Chen, and Academy Award winner Yuh-jung Youn in important roles. The film is already attached with strong star power, however, additional names are yet to be announced by the production companies: Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures, which co-acquired the rights to the original movie.

Ahn’s reimagined version of The Wedding Banquet will revolve around a story similar to the original: Two best friends stage a fake wedding, one hoping to obtain a Green Card and the other looking to fund her partner’s IVF treatment. However, their plan backfires when one of the friends’ grandmothers unexpectedly travels from Seoul to arrange a lavish Korean wedding banquet for what she thinks is the perfect couple.

Filming is set to begin next month in Vancouver, and the movie is expected to be released in 2025
