What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5) Episode 3: Since the end of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ season four, everyone must have wondered – what happened to Guillermo? Did Derek turn him into a vampire? Did Guillermo finally fulfill his long-held dream? The season five premiere hinted at his incomplete transformation. We realize that Guillermo, unfortunately, did not turn into a vampire as he thought he would. He also ended up telling Laszlo about it, which created another set of complications for him.

Since Guillermo did not get transformed by Nandor, this master would consider it disrespectful to the highest degree and would also probably murder him. Amidst that fear, Guillermo gets a moment of joy with the pride parade organized by their neighbor.

*Spoilers Ahead*

What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5) Episode 3 “Pride Parade” Recap:

Sean’s Election Campaign

The third episode of ‘What We Do in the Shadow’s Season 5 largely follows a pride parade that the neighbor of the vampires host. Sean Rinaldi (Anthony Atamanuik) plans to run for the position of comptroller in Staten Island. So, he and his wife Charmain (Marissa Jaret Winokur) plan to organize a pride parade to cover the ‘weak spots’ in their appeal. However, they declare their tone-deafness about this topic quite early in the discussion.

Besides the dialogue about the LGBTQIA+ community, they also ask the vampires for opinions about how they should approach the election. Nandor (Kayvan Novak), as always, gives incredibly impractical advice, out-of-sync to the times they live in. He suggests slaughtering the opponents! While these straight people discuss how the pride parade should be celebrated, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) is left silent. He has never been to a pride parade and only recently came out of the closet. So, he is skeptical about how the straight couple would organize it.

Anyhow, the Rinaldis think they have a say in this matter because of their bisexual cousin Dominic. They decide to use him to lip-sync to some songs all night long. Nandor complains about finding time from his trivial matters, whereas Laszlo appreciates their ideas. The Rinaldis also call these vampires ‘the gayest things on their block.’ When the couple introduces the idea of floats, Laszlo volunteers to create a colorful one himself.

Nadja’s Spirit-Swap

The doll ‘with the spirit of deceased human Nadja inhabiting it’ is still pissed at Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) for crushing her lower body. She regrets not being able to experience carnal desire. Nadja points out that she is not a virgin but recalls that she had sexual intercourse only after she became a vampire. Since the doll came into existence before that, she now craves sex. Nadja says that she would do anything to remedy that, only if possible. The ever-resourceful Guide (Kristen Schaal) says that it indeed is possible. She suggests a method of swapping the spirits into their corporeal vessels. Since she calls it incredibly easy, Nadja reluctantly agrees to go through the process.

The Guide says that the ‘Freaky Friday’ would be ideal for the swap process. The doll’s spirit eventually enters Nadja’s. She is determined to use it to fulfill her sexual desire. The moment after the transformation, the doll enjoys being a real-bodied person. Nandor and Colin (Mark Proksch) find it nothing extraordinary. She goes out to a bar and tries to seduce a few people. But due to her strange actions, she gets thrown out.  After her miserable attempt at speed dating, she offers Colin a chance to have sex with her. He agrees to do so but finds it impossible to even attempt. Then he asks The Guide if she can put two spirits into the same vessel. She says, ‘Why not?’ despite having never tried it out before.

Guillermo – Vampire or not?

Nandor believes that Guillermo is avoiding him because of Laszlo’s increasing influence on him. He thinks Laszlo is jealous of him and, thus, is trying to steal Guillermo. Laszlo, meanwhile, takes the former familiar away for some ‘science experiments.’ He tries to check the signs of Guillermo being a vampire. For that, he tests Guillermo’s agility, vampiric turnoffs, and telekinesis (the ability to move objects by mental power), among other signs of vampirism.

Since Laszlo cannot deduce it with his existing knowledge, he seeks the advice of other vampires. The Guide points out her pain – the vampires form insular units and limit any outside presence (i.e., her!) to join the group. The vampires share weird notions often associated with their kind. Laszlo decides to use these myths to find out if  Guillermo is a vampire or not. To their surprise, Nandor offers to join and help them in the process – mostly to figure out what is going on between Laszlo and Nandor.

They throw a bag full of rice on the ground to see who finds it irresistible not to count. While Laszlo and Nandor cannot stop their urge, Guillermo does not even feel it. Then, Laszlo tries three seamless jumps and manages to fly in the third one. Nandor takes it as a disrespect and says that he can travel to outer space. Even though he had never tried it before, he thinks it is easily manageable. He doesn’t even need to breathe oxygen. So, what could go wrong, right? On the other hand, Laszlo says his increased understanding of vampires is helpful. Guillermo is not sure how it will help turn him into a vampire. He thinks that he is a day walker like Blade since he can walk under the sun without any issues. But Laszlo’s skin starts to sting when he uses light directly onto it.

What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5) Episode 3 “Pride Parade” Ending Explained:

Laszlo decides to lather his skin with Guillermo’s sweat and use its extraordinary powers to walk in the sun himself. He goes out first time in the sun after ages and finds the brightness slightly uncomfortable. Still, he gets some ‘beach shades’ and goes to a beach to enjoy the experiences that humans do. Back in the vampire residence, Nandor talks with Guillermo about his closeness to Laszlo. To impress his former familiar, he even decides to go to outer space. Only when he tries it he understands how scary the prospect is.

Meanwhile, The Guide also swaps Colin’s soul into Nadja’s body, which creates an incredibly messy situation. Sean finally organizes his big event and asks Laszlo to speak. Laszlo had just returned from the beach and had an effect akin to extreme sunburn. Afterward, Nadja’s body arrives on the stage to reveal Colin on the opposite side of her head. It leads to some walkouts from the audience. While floating in outer space, Nandor realizes his smallness in the universe. Eventually, he gets pulled back on the ground and drops down right next to the event, naked. They all create a mess and attract attention to themselves. Guillermo remains in the background with a ‘Gay Guy’ board. However, instead of sorrow, he decides to soak in this moment of acceptance.
