William Goldenberg, the Oscar-winning editor known for his work on Argo and Zero Dark Thirty, is making his directorial debut with Unstoppable, an inspiring sports drama that tells the incredible true story of Anthony Robles, a wrestler who became a national champion despite being born with one leg. The film stars Emmy-winner Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight), and will make its North America premiere at the 2024 Chicago International Film Festival. After the premiere screening of Unstoppable on October 17 at the Music Box Theatre, Goldenberg will join Jerome and Robles for a Q&A session with the audience. A second screening will follow on October 18 at AMC NEWCITY 14.
Goldenberg, who has built a remarkable career as an editor over the last 25 years, says that directing has been a dream of his for a long time. He found the perfect project in Unstoppable after reading Robles’ autobiography.
“I was looking for something to direct, and when I read Anthony’s book, I couldn’t stop thinking about his story,” Goldenberg explained. “He accomplished so much despite the challenges he faced. Meeting him in person just reinforced how inspiring he is—he’s kind, generous, and truly remarkable. I’m honored that he trusted me to tell his story.”
A New Role Behind the Camera
Goldenberg’s transition from editor to director was a natural one, though not without challenges. He credits his years as an editor with helping him understand how to shape a story, especially when it comes to pacing and structure.
“Editing has taught me so much about storytelling,” he shared. “At the heart of filmmaking, that’s what it’s all about—telling great stories.”
He also pointed out that his experience working closely with directors over the years gave him valuable insight into how to handle the camera and plan scenes. However, directing actors was something new for him.
“The thing that editing didn’t prepare me for was talking to the actors,” he said. “But I tried to approach it the way I like directors to work with me—as clear and collaborative as possible.”
Anthony Robles’ Involvement
Anthony Robles himself was deeply involved in the making of the film. Goldenberg worked closely with him throughout the process to ensure the film stayed true to Robles’ story.
“Anthony helped with every part of the production, from writing the script to reviewing the wrestling scenes to make sure everything looked right,” Goldenberg said. “His input was invaluable—he gave us so many insights into his life that made the film feel authentic.”
In fact, Robles did much more than just give feedback—he also participated in filming some of the wrestling scenes, bringing his athletic skills to the screen. Goldenberg described having Robles on set as a huge inspiration for the entire crew.
“Anthony is such a gifted athlete, and seeing him work on the mat was amazing. He’s a true champion, both in wrestling and in life, and it was incredible to have him there.”
Unstoppable and the Festival
Unstoppable is a perfect fit for the Chicago International Film Festival, which has a long history of showcasing films that blend strong storytelling with real-world impact. Robles’ journey is more than just a sports story—it’s a powerful tale of overcoming obstacles and proving what’s possible with determination and hard work. Goldenberg, who is a fan of sports films like Rudy and Hoosiers, said he was drawn to the universal themes of underdogs rising to the top.
“I think people are really moved by stories about someone defying the odds to achieve greatness,” he explained. “Anthony’s story does just that. It’s not just about wrestling—it’s about perseverance, belief in yourself, and never giving up.”

For Goldenberg, the Chicago Film Festival also holds special meaning. Early in his career, he worked as an apprentice editor on The Breakfast Club, one of Chicago’s most iconic films. Reflecting on his experience in the city and with that film, Goldenberg said, “It was one of the first films I worked on, and it really resonated with me. So it feels special to be back in Chicago with my directorial debut.”
Unstoppable will premiere at the Music Box Theatre on October 17, followed by a Q&A with Jharrel Jerome and Anthony Robles. A second screening will take place on October 18 at AMC NEWCITY 14.
