Worst Ex Ever (2024) Netflix Docuseries Explained:
Worst Ex Ever Episode 1: “Dating the Devil”
On January 2023, the Grants Pass Police Department received a 911 call from Angie informing them that her friend Justine needed help. While still on the call, Angie reached Justine’s house and heard bangs and screaming. After finding a way to enter the home through the garage, Angie bumped into Benjamin Foster, who said Justine was having a heart attack and needed to go to the hospital.
Justine is unconscious when Angie finds her. As this goes on, Benjamin Foster flees the scene. When the cops arrive, Angie provides details about Benjamin and Justine, who have been dating for a couple of months. It was easy for cops to find the suspect, thanks to Angie, as she knew about Benjamin’s previous assault record in Las Vegas.
How did Benjamin Foster hurt Amber?
In June 2012, Amber met Benjamin at a strip club where he was the bartender, and Amber was a server. After that, Amber and Benjamin dated for years. Amber started to believe Benjamin was the one for her. After dating for over a year, Amber and Benjamin move in together. Amber recalls that Benjamin is a sort of lone wolf. The situation between Amber and Benjamin started to get sour when Benjamin began to feel jealous as Amber was helping her ex-boyfriend move to the city.
Much later, Amber realizes that Benjamin was seeing his ex-girlfriend behind her back. The red flag that Amber ignored was that Benjamin used to love collecting guns and knives. It was more than just an interest and an obsession. In November 2014, Amber and Benjamin were fighting. As a joke, Amber lied, saying she had thrown away a gun that Benjamin had recently bought.
This was the moment Amber saw Benjamin for who he was as Benjamin slapped and pinned Amber to the ground. Amber calls the police, and Benjamin is arrested. In September 2015, Benjamin is out of jail. When Amber arrives home, Benjamin waits for her by the door, so Amber convinces Benjamin to leave. Unbeknownst to Amber, Benjamin has sneaked into the house. Once Amber enters, Benjamin strikes her with a knife and cuts Amber’s finger.
Once again, Amber calls the police. This time, Benjamin has harmed himself and blames the attack on Amber—the police arrest Amber, unwilling to listen to her side of the story. However, a judge does some digging on Benjamin and realizes he has been charged before, so they cleared all charges against Amber. When Amber arrives home, she sees that Benjamin has taken all of Amber’s belongings.
What did Benjamin Foster do in Las Vegas?
In September 2017, Jamiee met Benjamin in Krav Maga sessions, which is known to be a more aggressive mixed martial art. This time, Jamiee is in a casual relationship with Benjamin and knows that Benjamin is also seeing other people. In December 2017, Benjamin reached out to Amber, apologizing for what he had done to her.
Eventually, Amber and Benjamin start hanging out as friends. On December 24, Benjamin hangs out at Amber’s house, and Amber gets a call. Something triggers Benjamin as he suddenly attacks Amber and strangles her until she is unconscious. When Amber wakes up, she runs out the door, gets inside a stranger’s car, and calls the police. The police warn her never to see Benjamin again.
In December 2017, Benjamin moved in with Jamiee as he had lost his job, and Jamiee is helping him out. One day, as Jamiee tries to reason things out with Benjamin about his future, Benjamin suddenly slams Jamiee to the ground. The threat to Jamiee’s life was getting real as the days passed, so Jamiee decided to file a restraining order against Benjamin. However, the police officer refused to escort Jamiee to the house and placed a restraining order by the door when Benjamin did not answer the doorbell.
Jamiee walks in the door and goes to bed with no other option. When Jamiee wakes up, Benjamin is on top of her and shaves off her hair. Jamiee is not allowed to get out of Benjamin’s sight for a week or so. During this time, Benjamin has violently abused Jamiee. Unfortunately, Jamiee’s credit card has maxed out, so Benjamin, Jamiee, and her dog set out to go to the grocery store.
At the parking lot, Benjamin takes Jamiee’s dog for a walk. She takes the chance and runs out the grocery store’s back door. Outside, a stranger helps Jamiee by taking her to the hospital. When the nurses see Jamiee’s condition, they call the cops. After having a bad experience with the cops before, Jamiee reluctantly tells them what has happened. By the time Jamiee is released from the hospital, the cops arrest Benjamin. Since Jamiee is not willing to go to trial, the cops only get a confession of domestic abuse from Benjamin, reducing his jail sentence.
Is Benjamin Foster caught?
Back in Oregon, Justine is hanging by a thread. However, the cops have identified Benjamin Foster and patrol teams are looking for him everywhere. The cops find out where Benjamin’s parents live and reach out to them. Luckily, Benjamin’s parents cooperate and say Benjamin has come home, taken loads of clothes, and left.
The mother tells the cops that Benjamin may as well be back in Las Vegas. On January 26, the narcotics detectives gave a tip that Benjamin was seen in the Sunny Valley area. The cops patrol a house where they suspect Benjamin is. As expected, Benjamin walks out of the house, does surveillance on his own, and sees a cop hiding in the bushes. Benjamin makes a run for it, and the cops lose Benjamin. The house belongs to Tina, a friend of Benjamin’s parents who didn’t know the authorities wanted Benjamin.
On January 29, 2023, the cops brought Tina in for questioning, but Tina was concerned about her dogs. So the cops called the caretaker, Richard, who said he was okay looking after Tina’s dogs. On January 31, 2023, a cab driver called the cops and informed them about a man named Richard calling a cab. However, the cab driver knew Richard to be an old man.
However, the man on the phone didn’t sound old. The cops search Richard’s house and find that Richard and his caretaker are dead. Through another tip, the cops realize Benjamin was seen in Justine’s neighborhood, so they call the SWAT team to enter Justine’s house. However, nobody is seen inside Justine’s house.
The cops find a movement beneath the building. Through a robot, they see Benjamin hiding underneath the house with a gun in his hand. Now Benjamin knows he is going to be caught, so he shoots himself. In the end, Benjamin dies, but luckily, Justine wakes up. In Justine’s words, we hear her say she had found out about Benjamin’s record in Las Vegas, so she had made sure Benjamin was fired. When Benjamin found out about it, he attacked Justine.
Worst Ex Ever Episode 2: “Betrayed by the Badge”
The second case opens with a woman calling 911 to report an armed robbery. In 2006, in Queens, New York, Seemona was a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley and worked towards opening a restaurant of her own. Seemona’s life is exhausting as she works at a company and cares for the restaurant.
On top of that, Seemona has a daughter, Chiara, who also needs Seemona’s attention. With this busy schedule and a mindset of never getting married, Seemona wasn’t looking for a relationship. At the beginning of March 2006, Seemona was supposed to open her restaurant, Golden Krust, but her father killed himself. After taking some time off, Seemona opened the restaurant at the end of March 2006. In June 2006, Seemona met Jerry at Golden Krust.
What happens between Jerry and Seemona?
When Jerry came into the restaurant, he had a conversation with Seemona. Furthermore, Jerry is a cop at the NYPD and helps Seemona out by making her everyday life a little easier. Eventually, Seemona and Jerry start dating. Since Jerry lived with his mother, he often stayed at Seemona’s house. In this way, Jerry also became an emotional support for Seemona, with whom she could talk about her dad’s death. In August 2008, Seemona and Jerry were dating for about two years. When Seemona was at the restaurant, she got a call from a woman who claimed to be Jerry’s wife. The woman tells Seemona that Jerry is married and has two children, and he is not really a cop.
After calming herself down, Seemona confronts Jerry, who asks Seemona not to trust his wife. Immediately, Seemona breaks off her relationship with Jerry. Jerry’s ex-friend talks to the interviewers but chooses to stay anonymous. It seems that Jerry was an informant for the cops but was not a cop himself. On March 8, 2009, Seemona asked Jerry to return her house keys, so Jerry showed up at Seemona’s residence.
Once Jerry promises to end the relationship peacefully, Seemona opens her door. Jerry knocks Seemona to the ground. After that, Jerry put duct tape over her mouth and started crying. Immediately Jerry pulls Seemona to the basement and rapes her. After committing the crime, Jerry begs Seemona not to talk to the cops about it and leaves. Once Jerry leaves, Seemona files a report for the sexual assault. The case is assigned to Frank, who works at the Queen’s attorney’s office. After chatting with Seemona, they decide to go to trial.
How are the armed robbery cases connected to Seemona?
One day, when Seemona was out to deliver food for her friend, the cops pulled over, arrested Seemona, and took her to Long Island. In the interrogation room, Detectives Charles and Nil try to get a confession out of Seemona, but she has no idea what she has done. After hours of interrogation, Detective Charles brings out a file with Jerry’s picture in it.
Seemona says whatever she is getting questioned about is probably Jerry’s doing, and she is being framed. Now, Marisa works with the NYPD from Queens, who was working on a case of impersonation of police officers with armed robbery that was similar to the one in Nassau County. The cops from Nassau County call Marisa to the precinct to talk to Seemona. When Marisa arrives, Seemona tells Marisa everything that has happened to her and asks her to look into Jerry. However, Seemona does not want Marisa to leave as she feels unsafe in the Precinct.
Soon after, Seemona is transported to the courthouse, where Seemona is read felony charges against her. Seemona is moved to a correctional facility after the court hearing. Now, Anthony gets involved in Seemona’s case as Seemona’s attorney. Meanwhile, the rape trial is approaching, but Frank knows that with Seemona behind bars, she won’t stand a chance against Jerry in court.
As Seemona’s attorney, Anthony gets evidence that when a call was made about an armed robbery by a man named Rajive, Seemona was at a casino, and there was a camera image as well. Unfortunately, the court says the picture is grainy, so Seemona continues serving time in jail. Anthony tries getting permission from Nassau County to obtain phone records of Jerry, Rajive, and Luz Johnson (another victim of armed robbery). However, Nassau County refused to give access to it.
In September 2009, before Seemona’s arrest, Jerry’s ex-friend was hanging out with Jerry. At this time, Jerry asks the man to make fake calls to the cops to frame Seemona. However, this friend refused to do it. Sometime later, the friend overheard the same conversation between Jerry and Rajive, and Rajive was willing to do it. In November 2010, the friend saw Rajive in a bar and asked him to come clean with the cops. After that, the friend was arrested for tampering with the witnesses in Seemona’s case. It turns out Jerry had told Rajive to make the call and put the friend behind bars.
Who saves Seemona?
In December 2010, Sophia stated to the police that Jerry framed Seemona as she was present at the time of planning the whole thing. Sophia is Jerry’s girlfriend and knows what is happening. Later, Tony informs Seemona that she will be released from prison, and the charges are dropped. Now Frank and the team combine the rape case with the case of framing Seemona for false charges against Jerry.
The people helping Jerry take the witness stand revealed the truth about what Jerry had done. In the court, Jerry is sentenced to 32 years in prison. After the case, Seemona filed a case against Detective Charles and Nassau County. The fact that during Seemona’s arrest, the cops had a file on Jerry but did not do a thorough investigation proved to be a fault on the detective’s part. In January 2017, Nassau County agreed to settle with Seemona out of court and paid 2 million dollars for damages.
Worst Ex Ever Episode 3: “Killing for Custody”
The third case opens with a neighbor calling the cops about a gunshot heard from their neighbor’s house who has a two-year-old daughter. The story is about Eric, who recently started a job at Alameda County Social Services. In 2002, when Eric was assigned to training at work, he sat next to Mei, and they hit it off. In October 2002, Mein invited Eric to go on a hike with their co-workers. When Mei arrives to pick up Eric, Mei’s daughter Rosa drives. During the hike, Rosa and Eric get close to each other.
Gathering courage, Eric asks Rosa out, and they start dating. The relationship goes well for them, and Eric and Rosa are happy. When Gregory first met Rosa, every time he asked a question, Rosa would whisper into Eric’s ear, and he would respond on her behalf. At first, Gregory thought Rosa might be shy, even though he felt the behavior was odd. Things started getting weirder when Rosa would also listen in on Gregory and Eric’s phone conversations.
Why did things start getting ugly between Rosa and Eric?
On February 14, 2004, Eric proposes to Rosa, and she says yes to the marriage. Eric is thrilled as everything seems to be working out well for him, and his lovable grandmother, Sally, over 80 years old, is ecstatic with the prospect of Eric and Rosa’s marriage. On April 2, 2005, Eric and Rosa got married. During Eric and Rosa’s honeymoon, they got into a big fight, and Rosa almost punched Eric. This was when Eric started to get cautious with Rosa, knowing that Rosa could get violent.
Eventually, they began to have money problems as Eric was the only one working. There were more fights because of financial issues, so much so that Eric was sometimes afraid to go home. Now, Rosa has started playing the divide and conquer game, stopping Eric from speaking to his family or friends.
After a couple of months of marriage, Rosa became pregnant. At this time, Eric was working two jobs and barely getting any sleep. During this time, Rosa started blackmailing Eric, saying she would file for divorce, taking Eric by surprise. Soon after, Rosa started staying with Mei, and Eric barely got to spend any time with his daughter.
At this point, Rosa has control of all the assets and kicks Eric out of the house. Nowhere else to go, Eric gets help from Sally and lives with her. After Sally’s husband passed away, she met a man named Lester, and they were in love. In June 2007, Rosa stopped letting Eric see his daughter. Eric was angry and sued Rosa for custody of his daughter. During this time, Rosa tries to sabotage Eric’s career, saying he is mentally unstable and will blow up the office.
The office now investigates Eric, and he eventually starts work after getting a clearance from a psychiatrist. Eric and Rosa are allowed 50% of custody in court. After the court orders, Rosa claims that Eric is sexually abusing his daughter. The court, however, realizes that Eric hasn’t misbehaved with his child and that the claims are fabricated.
What does Rosa do to get her child’s custody?
Eventually, Rosa’s behavior and reluctance to cooperate gave Eric full custody of the child. In January 2009, Lester tried calling Sally for their usual chats and meetings but did not get a response. So Lester sends Jeff and Ute (Lester’s son and daughter-in-law) to check on Sally. When Jeff and Ute are at Sally’s house, Eric pulls up, and they enter the house.
When Eric goes up the stairs, Mei waits and says Sally is in the garage. So Eric leaves his daughter with Mei and enters the corridor to find Rosa with a Taser gun. Rosa uses the Taser on Eric, and he falls to the ground. Mei and Rosa start beating Eric with a baton as soon as that happens. Hearing the noises, Jeff and Ute ask the neighbors to call the cops. Meanwhile, Eric tries to defend himself using the baton.
This does not last as Rosa pulls out a gun and asks Eric if he will let go of their child’s custody. Not wanting to die, Eric agrees. At that point, he hears his daughter calling Eric from a locked bathroom. The cops arrived and couldn’t determine who the suspect and the victim were. When they ask the trio not to move, Eric runs into a bedroom as he knows Rosa has a gun pointed at him.
One officer uses a Taser on Eric, while the other sees a reflection of Rosa with a gun. The cops arrest all three of them, and Eric informs the officers about Sally and his daughter. The cops find the child but don’t see Sally. When the cops find a revolver inside Rosa’s pocket, they arrest Rosa and Mei for a felony. During the questioning, Rosa lies, making herself look like the victim.
At this point, cops find Sally in a shed outside the house, pushed inside a garbage can. Through the investigation, the cops also find odd things in Rosa’s car. When the cops search Rosa and Mei’s house, they realize that the plan to attack and kill Sally, Eric, and Gregory was in motion for over a month. The plan was to force Eric to confess to killing his grandmother and eventually killing himself. However, Rosa and Mei’s plan fails. With enough evidence, Rosa is sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Sally and the attempted murder of Eric. Meanwhile, Mei is sentenced to life imprisonment for an attempt to murder.
Worst Ex Ever Episode 4: “Married to a Monster”
The fourth story begins with a woman calling 911 after hearing gunshots in the middle of the night. In 2007, Amanda met Kevin while Amanda was with her friend and Kevin with his friend. Initially, Kevin approached Amanda, but she dismissed him. After a couple of days, Amanda and Kevin bump into each other at a party. Here, Kevin convinces Amanda that fate has caused them to bump into each other.
Soon after, Amanda and Kevin start dating. Eventually, Amanda brings Kevin home, where she lives with her younger brother Mannie. On the first meet, Mannie gets along with Kevin really well. Kevin and Amanda moved in together after dating for a couple of months. The only person in Amanda’s family who feels something is off with Kevin is Alisha, also known as Punky.
Why did Amanda decide to leave Kevin?
In July 2009, Kevin and Amanda got married. In September 2011, Amanda was pregnant with her first child. Now Amanda has three children, two girls and a boy. One of the big problems for Amanda in the marriage is that Kevin is not affectionate enough. So when Kevin teared up holding his firstborn, Amanda was pleasantly surprised. Eventually, when Amanda is pregnant again, Kevin would verbally abuse Amanda. Since Kevin has had abandonment issues, and it has piled on now, it goes out of control.
Soon, Kevin starts getting controlling, asking Amanda to delete all male contacts from her phone. Moreover, Kevin checks Amanda’s phone often. In February 2016, Amanda talked to Kevin about wanting a divorce, making Kevin visibly upset. In November 2016, when Amanda was sleeping, Kevin tried to check her phone. Amanda stops Kevin, but Kevin gets angry, pushes Amanda inside a closet, and punches Amanda in the eye.
However, Amanda does not report it to the cops; she only informs her family. Since Amanda wanted Kevin to have custody of her children, Amanda decided not to file a report. Soon after that, Amanda finds a place to rent and takes the kids with her. Every day, Kevin calls Amanda either to apologize or to threaten her. One day, when Amanda is not ready to budge on her decision, Kevin says he will file for child support, alimony, and full custody of the children, and if Kevin does not get that, he will kill her.
In June 2017, Amanda came home late, and as she stepped out of the car, a man beat Amanda, and she was bleeding. Immediately, Amanda calls 911 and says she suspects Kevin. Since Amanda did not see the man’s face clearly, the cops couldn’t arrest Kevin. After that, Amanda files assault charges against Kevin and a protection order. Due to the nature of the incident, the protection order also includes the children.
Who killed Alisha?
In August 2017, at the court hearing, Amanda got full custody of the children, and Kevin had to pay a certain amount for child support. Now Amanda works full-time, but the caretaker, Abigail, can’t do a live-in situation. So Alisha would come over and look after the kids constantly. In September 2017, Amanda left for New York for a meeting, leaving the children in Alisha and Abigail’s care.
On September 20, 2017, both Abigail and Alisha were at home. In the middle of the night, Abigail wakes up to gunshots. She heads down to inspect and finds Alisha by the door, covered in blood. Immediately, Abigail calls the cops, and they investigate the case. The following day, Amanda hears the news about Alisha’s death and immediately suspects Kevin. However, the cops must find enough evidence to make a case against Kevin. The family has a secret funeral for Alisha because they fear Kevin.
The investigators now re-open the assault cases charged against Kevin after Alisha’s death. After a year of the murder, Kevin is found guilty on both the assault charges but is sentenced to only three years in prison. A month later, the cop gets a tip about a girl named Alexis, claiming that she, along with her boyfriend, had killed someone. The boyfriend, Jerradon Phelps, is Kevin’s cousin. On both their Snapchat, there are enough details about the murder. The police now question Jerradon, who eventually reveals that Kevin was looking for someone to commit a murder, so Jerradon volunteered to do it. Before going to Amanda’s house, Jerradon and Alexis meet Kevin. The duo were also paid to commit the crime.
Kevin only showed a photo of Amanda and informed them that there would be children at the house. None of this mattered to Jerradon, as he would shoot anyone who opened the door anyway. At the trial, both Jerradon and Alexis pleaded guilty, but Kevin pleaded not guilty as they claimed there wasn’t much evidence against Kevin. Alexis receives 15 years in prison, and Jerradon gets 32 years in prison. After a four-week-long trial, the jury found Kevin guilty of aggravated first-degree murder and sentenced him to life in prison without parole. The trial went well for Amanda and her family. However, nothing can bring Alisha back, and they will continue to live on her behalf, remembering Alisha daily.
Worst Ex-Ever (2024) Docuseries Review:
Like the previous docuseries, “Worst Ex Ever” brings horrifyingly absurd and unique cases to light of what exes or husbands have done to their partners. This series is a compelling watch; however, it may be disturbing for some viewers as it contains violence, assault, rape, and murder, among other things. The series has four episodes, each telling a different story set in various parts of America. Each tale starts off as something romantic and perfect until it isn’t. The series skillfully incorporates real-life footage of suspect interrogations, victim interviews, and police recordings from the crime scenes. It also strives to present a balanced narrative, ensuring that the story doesn’t come across as one-sided.
Interestingly, in a couple of the stories, we also see the friends of the perpetrators being interviewed. This helps us understand the story from all perspectives and the timeline. One of the most interesting things in this docuseries, especially with the fourth story of Amanda, is that we get to see a change brought about by the assault survivor in the real world.
After putting Kevin behind bars, Amanda has worked towards passing a bill to add coercive control as a part of domestic violence. It’s not just about the stories being told to spread awareness and warn people; it is meaningful to see real-life changes after that. Just like Blumhouse’s series, “Worst Roommate Ever,” this series also warns the viewers about being cautious before blindly getting involved with someone. The studio seems to be expanding its franchise, and we can’t wait to see what’s coming next!
