“Zero to Hero” is a Brazilian romantic comedy-drama streaming on Netflix. What is ‘Zero to Hero’ on Netflix about?
Zero to Hero” is a new musical rom-com on Netflix. It follows Hero, a wannabe rock star, who suddenly gets roped in to replace popular sertanejo singer Sandro Sanderlei. However, Hero does not like country music at all. So, we see him fit into a new environment and slowly fall in love with Sandro’s ex-girlfriend, Lulli. If you like predictable, cheesy entertainment, you’ll love this Brazilian film.
What happens in ‘Zero to Hero’ on Netflix?
Hero (played by Lucas Lucco) dreams of being an accomplished rock star. He wants people to admire his work and his musicianship. However, luck’s not on his side. He isn’t successful. So, he has to work odd jobs to be able to afford a living. One of these jobs is to perform some music for a prom party. Hero hates it so much that he gets drunk, behaves recklessly, and ruins their entire set. Around the same time, Sandro Sanderlei (also played by Lucco), a popular sertanejo singer who looks exactly like Hero, suddenly goes into a coma right before his music tour. His manager hates this but refuses to cancel their plans because it would mean loss.
Sandro’s managing team notices Hero and realizes his striking resemblance to the country star. So, they decide to use this doppelganger to replace Sandro for the next few performances. Since Hero is in financial trouble, he can’t say no to this job. As a result, he ends up at Sandro’s spot, having to sing songs that he hates. His close friend and drummer Panca (played by Felipe Hintze) joins him. On his first day as Sandro, Hero meets Lulli (played by Carla Diaz). He immediately falls in love with her. But she doesn’t feel the same way because she and Sandro were once in a relationship where he cheated on her and treated her poorly.
What happens between Hero and Lulli?
Hero keeps trying to charm Lulli. He also respects her and other crew members, which is unlike Sandro. But she cannot understand why Sandro is being good to her. After all, she thinks she is working with Sandro, who is disloyal and flirtatious to any woman he meets. Hero cannot behave like him. Sandro’s manager notices Hero’s love for Lulli and warns him against it because he doesn’t want to spoil his business with pleasure. Soon after, Hero is asked to feature in a music video as Sandro. But they need a female lead. So, Hero suggests casting Lulli.
Since Lulli is against this plan, Hero places a bet. She can ask him to sing any song she wants. If he sings it well, she must feature with him in the video. If not, she can post his video online as a meme. Lulli assumes he won’t be able to sing a rock song. To her surprise, Hero can perform it very well. So, she gets in her costume to be in the music video. During the shoot, Hero (as Sandro) and Lulli get lost in the moment and kiss each other. Lulli realizes that she is falling in love with Sandro. Considering their complicated history, she doesn’t want it to repeat. So, she walks away.
Does Lulli fall in love with Hero?
After the music video, Lulli abruptly leaves. But she soon returns to work with Hero. She gets attracted to this different, sensitive version of Sandro. Hero also falls more in love with her. But he disrespects Panca. So, Panca confronts Hero and leaves him on his own. Hero starts enjoying fame and success as a musical star. But he soon realizes that it is not his reality but Sandro’s. As a result, he decides to tell Lulli the truth. But he only cryptically tells her about why he’s acting differently. It breaks her heart. So, she leaves him alone.

Does Lulli realize Hero’s truth?
While Hero tries to mend his relationship with Lulli, Sandro gets better in the hospital. However, Sandro’s manager notices the rise of a new version of Sandro, who can blend rock with country. He wants to capitalize on this trend. So, he asks Hero to sign a deal with him and leave Sandro behind. Hero tricks the manager and lets Sandro have the deal. Later, he also mends his friendship with Panca. Meanwhile, Sandro’s team carries him out of the hospital and brings him backstage during Hero’s performance.
By then, Lulli’s parents convince her to give love a chance. So, she also ends up at the concert with her parents. In the middle of his performance, Hero announces that he isn’t Sandro and brings Sandro on stage. So, Lulli learns Hero’s truth. She realizes that the person she fell in love with is not Sandro but Hero. As a result, they get back together. Because of this, as the title suggests, Hero rises from “Zero to Hero” and chooses a life with Lulli. They get together while Sandro reclaims his position as a popular country singer.
Zero to Hero (2024) ‘Netflix’ Movie Review:
In recent years, Netflix has been expanding its content library with projects from across the globe. However, it is rarely focused on creating something that warrants our attention or something that stands out from most films or shows across the web. “Zero to Hero” is another example of this streaming giant relying on a rom-com formula. I’m sure that this film’s clones are being remade in other languages and countries.
It follows an underdog named Hero who gets a job he isn’t excited about. He needs to replace a popular country singer, who is his doppelganger. Hero loves rock music and hates the country genre. But, he must make peace with it. Meanwhile, he falls for a woman that the star singer used to date. Their friction and eventual character growth are predictable. There is no surprise. Besides, it does not develop its character arcs sufficiently to make them seem convincing. So, when Paca confronts Hero about fame getting to his head, it feels sudden and unwarranted. So, ultimately, “Zero to Hero” is nothing but a safe bet of a project for Netflix. It is just a mixture of formulas that seem to likely pull in viewers from multiple countries.
