1923 (Season 1), Episode 5 Recap:

Episode 5: Ghost of Zebrina

Taylor Sheridan has written ‘Ghost of Zebrina,’ and Guy Ferland directs it. Without a firm leader, the Duttons are unsure how to proceed with their decisions. Due to the same disquiet, Cara (Helen Mirren) goes to the post office, hoping that Spencer (Brandon Sklener) will respond to her letters. But she returns to the ranch, disheartened. The times are hard for their family, who are caught in mundane routines and the tedium of healing over the lives they lost.

During their family dinner, Emma (Marley Shelton) sits silently, like a ghost, over the tragic death of her husband. Jack (Darren Mann) seeks revenge on those who wronged his family. Meanwhile, in Africa, Spencer plans his way back to the USA to the Yellowstone ranch with his lovely beau, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer). After a long walk through the local market, they meet the local officer. Spencer asks him for transportation options to the US. The officer shared two alternatives, one of which was a first-class ticket for 40 and the other was for a tourist class for 30, where they would be with rodents. So, for Alexandra’s safety, Spencer takes the first-class ticket. But the moment he hears the three weeks it will take to reach his destination, he starts looking for alternate ways that will take shorter.

Teonna (Aminah Nieves) flees from the boarding school after killing both nuns that wronged her. Upon seeing that slaughter, Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) decides to summon the girls. He does not find Teonna among them and asks her closest friend, Baapuxti (Leenah Robinson), about her. She refuses to disclose it despite repeated beatings from Father Renaud. He takes her back to his office and makes her afraid of sin by withholding the truth.

Baapuxti eventually says that Teonna went home, which does not satisfy him as the truth. The orthodox father terrifies her for straying away from the light. There’s only so much abuse and insult that one can tolerate. So, at the end of this interrogation, Baapuxti curses the father in her native tongue, which is something that he detests. After burying the two nuns, the father sends his men to look for her and to bring her back to him.

Meanwhile, Teonna heads on her journey back home through the brutal desert with her physical and emotional scars. She seems tired of all the struggle and barely maintains her sanity. At night, she is attacked by a wolf, which she must scare away in order to save herself. Even when the terrors of her school left her, she still had to face terrors of unpredictable nature. By the next morning, a flock of sheep gathered around the rock she had stayed overnight to stay safe from the wolf.

Soon after, a native American man, Hank (Michael Greyeyes), finds her. He learns that she has run away from her Indian school, one of whom raped her, and the other one hit her. He empathizes with her due to the brutality he must have witnessed in his past life. Knowing she was going back home, he advises her against it since that would be the first place white Catholics would look for. Since it would be detrimental to her safety, he offers to take her home with himself safely and then inform her parents.

In Africa, Spencer tries to find another way to head back home with his bride. A local man offers him a solution but notes the danger it entails for the lady. He takes Spencer to an elderly, deceased sailor Lucca (Peter Stormare), who is looking for help on his run-down tug. Spencer walks up to him and offers the money he would have paid for a regular-class ticket. Lucca sees mercury wounds on the young man and shares an anecdote that lets us know the terrifying past he has witnessed. Eventually, he accepts Spencer’s offer.

Meanwhile, Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) continues with his efforts to destroy the semblance of well-being from the life of Duttons and other ranchers. He goes to meet Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) yet again and offers a place from Yellowstone ranch that can prove beneficial for him to mine from. Donald sees the opportunity to take ownership of the entire valley and is determined to make Duttons make a run for their lives. After their dialogue about land possession, Donald shows Banner the luxuries one can afford in a city over a farm or a ranch. Easy access to light and water shows how necessities become a matter of comfort for the city-dwellers. He shows what wealth can help a man buy such a comfortable life and makes Banner greedy for this ease by getting him the land he wants.

1923 (Season 1) Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained

Back on Yellowstone ranch, Jack (Dareen Mann) sells their family’s cattle to take care of their own livelihood. While he prides himself on this possession his family has, the buyer reminds him how losing the same strips them become normal, which he is not used to. Jacob goes through slow and steady progress in his health, where he is taken out to consume some sunlight. That is when Jack conveys his anger for losing out on their and Strafford’s precious possessions. He then gets emotional since a lack of clear leadership (especially that of Jacob due to his old age) leads them to this ill fate.

Meanwhile, the wedding of Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) and Jack keeps getting postponed. She conveys her concern about the grief he is feeling that is keeping him distant from thinking about their bond. She has also lost her family, her father because of his death, and her mother because of her reluctance to treat the lives of ranchers with respect. He acknowledges neglecting her happiness in his personal grief. To make up for it, he decides to make the most of the moment they feel closer to one another. He shares the vows that he had planned to do during their wedding.

She assures him with the same positive tone and then sees Jack embracing Elisabeth on her way back home. She understands the tender moment is them, officiating their bond.

Meanwhile, in Africa, Spencer is unsure about Alexandra’s safety on his trip on that dilapidated tug. Since she had an upbringing that assured her safety and security from everything, he was worried that she wouldn’t withstand the unpredictable challenges in the ocean and thus tells her not to come along with him. However, she makes him an offer he cannot refuse, to have her come right then or never. He sees no other option but to accept.

On their way to the tug, Alexandra boasts about her resourcefulness. While they could not send a direct wire to the United States, the boats could send them until they reached England on their own. Once Spencer sends the message across, the couple heads to their tug. Lucca objects to Alexandra tagging along with them. But seeing Spencer having made up his mind, he chooses not to object. They see a ghost ship during their journey, and Lucca shares a tale about it. All its passengers died, and while it was supposed to have sunk in the waters, it stayed afloat. While many boats experienced its wrath, Lucca had a knack for not letting that happen to his tug.

He goes up to the cabin to learn that Lucca has died.

Now that their captain is dead, he calls the nearest station to inform them about it and get guidelines on how to proceed further.
