Engaged to Be Murdered (2023) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
The film starts with Amanda preparing herself for her son, Jack’s arrival after almost 11 months. Louise, Amanda’s helper in the house, has brought a cake for the occasion. Amanda trusts Louise very much as she has always taken good care of her. Since the departure of her husband, Amanda has been a bit obsessive with Jack and his well-being. So, upon his arrival, when Jack surprises Amanda by introducing her to Olivia, she is a bit overwhelmed. Jack even tells her that they have decided to get engaged soon.
Amanda, being how she is, calls up Victor, Jack’s uncle, and asks about Olivia’s background. He could only share the news of how Jack and Olivia met each other in one of their finance offices in Singapore. This leads to the suspicion that a rival company might have sent Olivia to get inside Jack’s head and leak essentially private information about the company. Amanda then asks Olivia for coffee, and right after their meeting, Olivia confirms to Jack that his mother does not like her at all.
What does the Private Investigator find out about Olivia?
Amanda meets with her best friend Caroline and shares her thoughts about Jack’s engagement with Rachel, her daughter. Rachel and Jack had a relationship that Jack broke due to some reason. Rachel seemed to have overcome that traumatic period as she had loved him so much. However, Olivia’s addition to the whole scenario provokes the idea inside Amanda’s head that no one is more suitable for Jack than Rachel. But Caroline asks Amanda if she does not want to involve her daughter again in this as Rachel has already gone through a lot.
Amanda decides to verify whether Olivia is safe from all angles to be a part of their family. So, she appoints a private detective named Duncan to follow her moves along with her son Jack at times. Duncan comes with some pictures that show Olivia receiving flowers from another guy in a restaurant. Since they do not have much on the man, Amanda asks Duncan to get as much information as possible to get behind Olivia’s real intentions so that she can explain it to Jack. Meanwhile, Stan Wu, an employee of Jack’s company, has sent someone to hack Olivia’s phone so that they can have proof of whether she is working as a corporate spy.
How does Olivia end up in the Hospital?
As time progresses, we see different plots opening up, making Olivia the victim most of the time. After her phone hack, there comes another time when a stranger tries to kill her. But thanks to Amanda’s arrival, the stranger runs away, leaving Olivia lying unconscious on the floor. Even at the hospital, someone tries to kill her. In the CCTV footage, the detective confirms the scarf the attacker wearing was Amanda’s. Olivia now doubts that Amanda is trying to kill her, and Jack also sort of believes that her mother’s obsession is getting out of hand.
However, Duncan has now successfully clicked the picture of the man Olivia used to visit. He even chased after him but unfortunately missed to get a hold of him. Meanwhile, Amanda has told Caroline about the private investigator, and Caroline informs Rachel. Rachel does not want anyone to interfere between Jack and Olivia, as she wants them to live happily. So, she texts Jack about this, and Jack is furious over Amanda. At that moment, someone leaves an envelope at the doorstep as Jack finds out about the man Olivia is visiting.
How does Olivia Manage to Prove Her Innocence?
When asked about the man, Olivia admits to Jack that she has a brother who used to have drug problems and always wants money from her. She wants him to be settled, but his behavior is unpredictable. So, after a while, she stopped giving him any money, and now he follows her wherever she goes. Knowing all of this, Jack decides to meet with her brother, and after discussing further with him about his situation, he decides to give him an opportunity in his company. Olivia’s brother tells her that he has been sober for more than a year now, and he wants to do something respectable with his life.
Olivia has also mentioned an error in funds in the company book to Jack. She thinks that someone from inside the company is sending money to a company that does not even exist. After asking the bank, Jack finds out all the transaction details from them, and thorough research reveals that Stan Wu has been stealing money from the company. He is trying to escape from his crimes. But somehow Olivia, without knowing it was him, had successfully caught the error in the number. Jack’s uncle Victor is personally impressed with Olivia and thanks her. This somehow helps Olivia to gain the trust of the family.
Engaged to Be Murdered (2023) Movie Ending Explained:
Who is Behind the Attacks on Olivia?
When Duncan confirms on the call that the person Olivia used to see is her brother, Amanda feels a dilemma. On one hand, she is happy that Olivia is not cheating on her son. On the other hand, she doesn’t want her to be part of the family. She explains this to Caroline. However, she does not show much interest in her situation as she takes her leave. Before leaving, Amanda catches Caroline doing something fishy. Amanda discovers the scarf that was found in the CCTV footage.
Caroline explains that from the time Rachel and Jack broke up, she wanted them to be together no matter what. So, when Olivia comes to the scene, she decides to remove her from the equation. Therefore, when Jack feels upset, Rachel will be there to console him, and they will be together again. Rachel asks Amanda that she, too, has wanted this to happen, so why bother now? Amanda tells her that even if it is true that she does not like Olivia much, she never hated her or wanted her to be harmed in any way. All she wants is for Olivia to come from a clean background so she can trust her blindly with Jack.
Soon Caroline starts fighting with Amanda, and with the scarf, she tries to choke her to death. Louise comes right at that moment, pushing Caroline down the stairs. Later, Jack and Olivia come to the house, and Amanda apologizes to Olivia for behaving in such a manner. Amanda is happy knowing that Jack has helped Olivia’s brother settle in. At the end of the film, we see Rachel apologizing to Jack and Olivia on behalf of her mother. However, in the very next scene, we see Rachel behaving like a maniac in her room, waiting for the right moment to be married to Jack.
