Last week, “Criminal Record” began with a two-episode premiere on Apple TV+. The miniseries offered a glimpse into the lives of two police detectives who happen to cross paths in connection to an old murder conviction case. DCI Daniel Hegarty wants to bury its roots for the sake of his legacy. However, DS June Lenker is determined to bring the truth out about a racially prejudiced verdict. As a result, they hardly meet eye to eye on these matters. At the end of the second episode, Hegarty brings proof to establish that the two calls June spoke about were not made by the same person. Now, “Criminal Record” episode 3 follows Hegarty bringing Lenker to work on a horrific murder case. While trying to win his trust, she continues to dig deeper into the case involving Errol Mattis. Spoilers ahead!

Criminal Record Episode 3 ‘Kid in the Park’ Recap:

The third episode of “Criminal Record,” titled “Kid in the Park,” begins with a shooting incident. We see a young boy walking back home with an ice cream. Out of nowhere, a gunshot is fired. The bullet hits the kid’s head, which creates quite a scene around him. Everyone starts panicking. Soon after, Detective Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) arrives at the crime scene and starts looking around for details with Detective Kim Cardwell (Shaun Dooley). Hegarty wants to find information about the bullet in the kid’s head to investigate further. While looking for an additional team for their job, Hegarty decides to choose detective June Lenker (Cush Jumbo), despite their difference of opinions in the recent past.

June arrives at the crime scene to learn about the dead kid. Hegarty asks her about her investigation of the Hayes Lane caller. By asking that, he wants to show that he cares about it while trying to know what she’s up to. She does not get into any details and portrays a sense of casualness toward that case. Detective Chloe Summers (Dionne Brown) joins June to hear Kim just burdens them to dig for information through other methods instead of taking charge by himself. To a degree, it also seems that he implies they will be better at using underground sources.

Personal vs Professional

The shooting of a young kid in East London impacts June’s personal life. She starts worrying for her son Jacob (Jordan A Nash) and the kids he usually hangs out with. After all, he is not much older than the young boy. Maureen (Zoë Wanamaker) & Leo (Stephen Campbell Moore) watch the news about the same shooting. Nine-year-old Isaac Whitlow’s condition worsens as he remains in critical condition. Both Maureen & Leo try to present themselves as progressive liberals, worrying whether the shooting of a black kid will receive the same amount of attention.

On the other hand, lawyer Sonya Singh (Aysha Kala) learns that June is working in Hegarty’s team for a new investigation. She warns June to be more cautious. June decides not to let Hegarty get any hint of her work into the Errol Matthis case. Sonya decides to seek the help of some volunteers from Doris’s past campaign for her son. They started spreading posters about the caller who ran away from the Hayes Lane payphone. Sonya assures June that these people have no idea about the call recordings, knowing that it can ruin June’s career. Before June is about to leave, Sonya hands over a box full of evidence into Errol’s case. She expects June to use her expertise as a police detective to look into it.

Back home, June goes through the evidence about the Errol Mattis case. She listens to Hegarty speaking with Errol’s son – Patrick. In the box, she also finds a photo of Patrick with Adelaide. However, along with some things that might help their case, June also finds Errol’s history of misdemeanors, which can cause issues for them. She & Sonya discuss the car crash that happened right soon after Adelaide’s death. The prosecution concluded that Errol wanted to take his life & his son’s after the murder. Regardless, Sonya thinks he just wanted to feel at home – by being with his mother. Considering the lack of clear evidence, June decides to go meet him in the prison.

What does June learn from Errol about Adelaide’s case?

Wheelchaired detective Tony Gilfoyle (Charlie Creed-Miles) informs Hegarty that June may not have stopped her research into the Hayes Lane caller. Hegarty sees the poster that is being distributed with the caller’s pixelated photo. So, he plans to get the information out of her. After meeting Isaac’s mother in the hospital, she meets Hegarty. She lets him know that Isaac’s mother is a friend of a friend. While he walks out of the car, she finds his card as a chauffeur. After the brief dialogue, June heads directly to the Whitecross prison to speak with Errol. He starts on a slightly defensive note since she is a police officer. Like Errol, he also does not trust their department.

June asks him about his first interview, where he mentioned an alibi. Although Errol said he met Mustafa at a barbershop, the police said Mustafa didn’t know Errol. Even though Errol & his mother appealed this judgment, it did not go their way. Besides, he does not remember any clear details about his confession. So, June realizes that he is tired of the police trial ordeal. After she leaves, an officer calls Tony and informs him about her visit to their prison. Meanwhile, she & Sony talk about Hegarty’s side gig as a driver and the reason he is doing it. Is it for just some extra cash? Or does it have to do with something more? Well, they can’t know anything for sure.

Criminal Record Episode 3 ‘Kid in the Park’ Ending Explained:

Does Hegarty learn about June’s Whitecross prison visit?

After Kim’s emergency call, June heads out to check the updates on the shooting investigation. Kim gets angry at her for not being on top of the matter. While she joins Chloe, Hegarty guides his team to break into the suspect’s apartment. His men find a woman, but not him. While his team keeps looking for the suspect, he receives a call from Tony. Tony tells him about June’s Whitecross visit and warns that she might put them in trouble. So, he expects Hegarty to take some action to silence her. While on call, Hegarty notices the suspect on another road. Although he sees the man walking toward June, he waits to inform her.

As a result, the suspect attacks her. On Hegarty’s part, it seems intentional. June also senses it, considering their recent arguments. Afterwards, he pries information about what she was doing during the day. She mentions her Whitecross prison visit but lies that she went there for an interview for more intel. Then, she makes sure to point out why she did not mention it before (Hegarty would have assumed that she went in relation to Errol Mathis’s case). Later, Hegarty’s senior – Claudia, warns him to embrace an inclusive approach. At the end of Episode 3, June receives a call from the officer who worked on a case against Patrick. At the time, Hegarty told that officer to let Patrick go – saying ‘I vouch for him’.
