Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Season 2) Episode 5: After last week’s episode saw a reluctant Rudeus accept enrolling at university, this week’s episode sees him introduced to – or reintroduced to – some major characters in this new story arc. He interacts the most with Zanoba, who had a brief yet bizarre debut in the first season, albeit not in the worst way, and also with Fitz, who the audience knows is Sylphie in disguise thanks to Episode 0. Rudeus’s interactions with Sylphie are of particular note, as it’s a question of when, not if, he discovers Fitz is Sylphie but the journey to get there is particularly important as well. We also see Rudeus interact a little with his classmates and get a hint of their personalities and the role they’re likely to play moving forward.
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Season 2) Episode 5 “Ranoa University of Magic” Recap:
Opening with a shot of Rudeus and Elinalise finally arriving at the Ranoa University of Magic, the episode then sees the latter complain about how she didn’t get to meet any gentleman during their journey. As Julius goes to meet Jenius, the one who invited him, Elinalise decides to join him as she is interested in young boys of Rudeus’s age. During a voiceover by him, it is revealed that Rudeus discovered Elinalise is cursed and will die unless she has sex with a man regularly. Meeting with Jenius, Rudeus expresses a desire to enroll at the university, but Jenius says they must conduct a trial test first. On their way to the test, Jenius explains that they have several classes, and not all of them are magical. When Rudeus asks, he further adds that they have classes on healing, detoxification, and dispelling curses.
At the training hall, Rudeus is introduced to his opponent, Fitz, who is actually Sylphie in disguise. They are to duel using voiceless incantations, and Rudeus wins in a flash due to his superior skills. Worried that he might have destroyed Fitz’s reputation and image, Rudeus claims that Fitz let him win due to him being a newcomer and promises to pay back this debt. With that, Rudeus is admitted to the university as a special student, meaning that he does not have to attend regular classes, is exempt from school fees, and only has to attend homeroom once a month. Elinalise also joins as a student, and the two hear Ariel’s welcoming speech as student council president for the newcomers.
During the homeroom class, Rudeus reunites with Zanoba Shirone, the prince of the Shirone Kingdom, from the first season, and Zanoba is ecstatic to see him again. He is also introduced to Linia Dedoldia, Pursena Adoldia, and Cliff Grimoire, fellow special students, all of whom are arrogant in different ways. Cliff knows of Rudeus through his meeting with Eris in the past (in the special episode “Eris the Goblin Slayer”), though he says Eris is not a student at the university. One student is missing, known as Miss Silent, according to Zanoba, and she is not here since she is exempt even from homerooms owing to her research. But Zanoba says Rudeus will meet her eventually. Rudeus later explores the university before ending up in the library, where he wants to research the Teleportation Disaster in Fittoa and is unsure of where to start when he runs into Fitz again.
Trying to apologize for his supposedly wrong actions at their last meeting, Rudeus is told by Fitz that it is not necessary and asks why Rudeus is in the library. When Rudeus explains that he is looking into the Teleportation Disaster in the Fittoa region, Fitz expresses surprise, and Rudeus further explains that while he found his family on the way back from the Demon Continent, he still has not found his childhood friend Sylphie. Fitz calls him amazing and leaves with some parting advice on which book to read, leading to Rudeus considering Fitz, a good person for not holding a grudge against him. Later, while eating lunch with Zanoba, he explains to Rudeus how he ended up at the university and also tells Rudeus not to address him formally and to simply call him by his name. The two are then interrupted by Luke, Princess Ariel’s bodyguard, who asks if Rudeus knows his name. When he admits that he doesn’t, he introduces himself as Luke Notos Greyrat and is displeased that Rudeus did not know that.
Zanoba explains that he is here mainly as a bodyguard and that Ariel apparently lost a fight for the throne back in the Asura Kingdom, and Luke and Fitz are here to protect her. Furthermore, Fitz is known as Silent Fitz, and nothing else is known about him. On his way back to the dorms in the evening, Rudeus picks up something from the ground which fell from a window – panties. Suddenly, just as he gets surrounded by angry female students who are about to punish him for allegedly being a pervert and a panty thief, despite Rudeus protesting his innocence, Fitz shows up.
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Season 2) Episode 5 Ending Explained:
How does Fitz help Rudeus?
Apologizing for dropping the panties from the window, Fitz explains that it is all his fault and that Rudeus just happened to pick them up and is innocent. However, one of the girls, a gorilla-like beast woman named Goliade, still argues that he should not have been there in the first place since boys are not allowed in the area after sunset. Rudeus, being a new student who just enrolled, did not know that, which Fitz points out, but the girl still does not listen.
Wanting to discipline him for breaking the dorm rules, the girl insists on punishing him but falls silent in shock when Fitz pulls out his wand at her. Stating that it was not his fault, Fitz then threatens all the girls present, and they are reluctantly forced to let Rudeus go lest they end up in the infirmary. Fitz then heals Rudeus’s minor injuries and apologizes once again for letting the panties drop, though Rudeus assures him that it was not his fault and even thanks him for his help. When Fitz says it was just the right thing to do, Rudeus is in awe of his character and states his gratitude to him; an amused Fitz says it feels weird to be thanked by him. Confused, Rudeus asks why but Fitz says it is a secret, and the episode ends.
