In addition to being yet another garish Lifetime presentation, “The Wrong Life Coach” is another addition to the line of movies starting with ‘The Wrong…’. David DeCoteau, a Lifetime Movie Network doyen, is known for his ‘The–Wrong’ Universe. The movies work by recycling the same values, themes, and even actors, albeit with slight variations in characters and settings.
The Wrong Life Coach (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
Jordan Roberts works as a marketing manager in a corporate firm. Her boss, Tara, is very demanding, so much so that Tara is all Jordan can talk about to her people, despite loathing her. She shares her life with her mother, who has been living with her ever since her father’s death, and a loving partner, Peter. When Peter hints to Jordan about his wish to get married, Jordan, who is already inundated with her stressful work life and familial responsibilities, is jolted and refuses to make any such commitment. Easing her stress is her friend, Natalie.
The first meeting of Jordan and Liz at a coffee shop sets the stage for what is to follow. Exploiting Jordan’s indecisiveness over picking her choice of coffee, Liz makes the decision for her. This marks her condescending entry into Jordan’s life, who clearly suffers from low self-esteem. That Liz has nefarious intentions over the seemingly innocuous act of advising which coffee to pick is proven as she threatens the cafe worker for coming in her way. Liz introduces herself as an old schoolmate, but Jordan fails to recall her. Liz also adds that she is a life coach, and Jordan gets convinced without probing further. Not too long after this, Liz successfully convinces– rather, compels– Jordan to appoint her as her life coach.
Liz’s life coach, Rhonda Wilkes, seems to be aware of Liz’s unclear intentions. She tries contacting Liz, but Lizz refuses to indulge the details of it and simply states that she is on her way to removing her obstacle, just as she was taught in her sessions with Rhonda. On the other hand, Jordan’s mother is not too convinced with the credibility of ‘life coaches.’ She is of the belief that Jordan’s life is going well, and her daughter’s decision to pursue whom she calls ‘scammers’ confuses her.
Later, Jordan meets Liz at a diner for dinner. During the dinner, Jordan inadvertently slips in personal details to Liz, like her address and her disappointment, albeit negligible, over Natalie’s absence during the time she was reeling from her father’s death. Liz also purposefully asks if Jordan lives with her mother, to which Jordan replies that it is the opposite.
Jordan asks the waiter to get her a house salad and specifically asks him to leave out the onions. However, when the waiter gets her order wrong, even though Jordan tries to accommodate without causing much hullabaloo, Liz compels her to confront the waiter for it. Liz advises Jordan to force the waiter to take the order off the bill. Liz assures that if done correctly, this confrontation can be her first step towards her personal growth. The waiter does arrive and, after a heated exchange of words, gets fired. Jordan also happens to come across her old schoolmate, Patty, who serves as a bartender at the diner. Patty, however, is surprised to see Jordan hanging out with Liz, although nothing serious comes out of it. Before leaving, Liz follows the waiter to the kitchen without Jordan’s knowledge and injures him with a stun gun.
With time, Liz’s overbearing ways start becoming more apparent. For instance, she turns up at Jordan’s house unnoticed to conduct the first session. This causes slight inconvenience to Jordan, but it doesn’t provoke a sense of alarm. To go for the session, Jordan has to sacrifice her plans with Natalie, which she had made earlier. In fact, this is going to be the second time that Jordan is forced to prioritize Liz over her plans with Natalie, which are made well advanced in time. Jordan’s mother starts taking note of her daughter’s overt dependence on this life coach. Moreover, she is not happy about her conduct with Natalie. Liz starts manipulating Jordan against her mother and Natalie.
During their session, Liz snoops on Jordan’s email password. When Jordan goes aside to talk with her mother, Liz hides a compact camera in the room to further extend her power over Jordan. Jordan tells Liz about her worry of losing Peter over the conversation of engagement. Liz suggests that Jordan should satisfy Peter’s sexual needs. This way, she can buy herself plenty of time until she is ready for the commitment. She also forces Liz to take provocative photos and send them to Peter.
Meanwhile, Rhonda tries contacting Liz after she finds out that Liz has started establishing herself as a life coach to others without any certification. After Rhonda confronts her, Liz instantly fires Rhonda and severs all contact with her. Soon Liz manages to manipulate Jordan into confronting Tara and asking for a resignation from her current job. What Jordan misinterprets as her honesty are actually hasty decisions foisted on her. Liz, being aware of Jordan’s pulse, takes full advantage of the situation.
What happens between Natalie and Jordan?
Natalie is concerned about Liz’s threatening presence in Jordan’s life. Jordan, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to care because Liz has successfully instilled in Jordan the notion that Natalie is jealous of her. Natalie tries to make Jordan understand that Liz has, in reality, directed her towards unemployment. Jordan is not ready to distrust Liz merely because she believes Liz is a professional who cannot go wrong, even if her methods appear questionable.
Natalie enlightens Jordan on the futility of the label ‘professional’ in terms of life coaches. She explains that the proliferation of life coaches is so that one does not need any institutional qualification to become a life coach. Tension starts arising between Jordan and Natalie. When Liz arrives, Natalie asks her to stay away from Jordan, but Liz starts attacking Natalie for her failure to be by the side of Jordan during her most difficult time. Liz dictates Jordan benevolently and proclaims that she has outgrown the friendship with Natalie.
After the session with Jordan, when Liz leaves, Natalie starts following her. She breaks into Liz’s house in her absence, trying to look for something that corroborates her anxieties surrounding Liz. Before she gets the chance to inform Jordan about her findings, Liz hits her head with a baseball bat and falls. Liz grabs Natalie’s phone. She sends a text on behalf of her to Jordan hinting at her changing and positive attitude towards Liz.
How does Liz jeopardize the relationship between Jordan and Peter?
In the session, Liz observes that Jordan is showing signs of being ready to finally make a commitment to Peter as she loves him. So, she quickly tries instigating Jordan by telling her that Peter is trying to trap her. Since Jordan is not a very confident person and there is always a recurring disbelief that she has in herself, Liz subsists on that and enlarges her insecurities.
After making Natalie collapse, Liz clicks provocative pictures of herself in her bathroom. She then starts watching Jordan and Peter being intimate with each other, without their knowledge, through the secret camera that she had planted. Liz finds it the appropriate time to send Peter her headless provocative images. She watches as Jordan finds the photos on Peter’s phone. Jordan, by now completely in the thrall of Liz, calls Liz and asks her to help her out. Liz breaks them apart and watches in jubilation as Jordan throws Peter out of her house.
How does Jordan change her mind about Liz?
Even after multiple red flags, Liz still has Jordan’s trust. This time she encourages Jordan to let go of her mother. She tries to show Jordan how the whole world is against her and how, time and again, it is Liz who has shown up for her. Liz proclaims that the fact that Jordan’s mother is staying with her is extremely unhelpful and unhealthy for Jordan’s personal growth. She hints that Jordan is letting her mother leech off her, and the only way to move forward will be to find her a separate condo where she can live her own life.
When Jordan’s mother hears her plan, she is upset and tries explaining that family is the only unit that will stay forever, not life coaches. Jordan realizes the manner in which Liz has led her astray. She immediately fires Liz, which, in turn, triggers Liz. Unable to accept rejection, when Liz starts insulting her by making remarks about her insecurities, Jordan slaps Liz and leaves.
Jordan reaches Natalie’s house but does not find her anywhere. Unable to trace her even virtually, she goes to the police station to file a missing complaint. Liz finds out that Jordan is about to appear for an interview for a new job. The interview looks hopeful for Jordan, but Liz’s intentions are killing her chances. Liz logs into Jordan’s email with her password and sends her potential employer a lecherous mail with her provocative photos. A detective shows up at Liz’s doors on account of Natalie’s disappearance, but failing to produce a warrant, he is turned away. Later, Liz follows Peter into a bar, forcefully kisses him, and has someone click the photo surreptitiously. She sends the photo to Peter, which again finds its way to Jordan.
The Wrong Life Coach (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
What causes Liz’s Fixation on Jordan?
Jordan meets Patty and asks her about Liz. Patty confirms that she was indeed a little surprised to see Jordan hanging out with Liz on the first day itself. She reveals that Liz had particularly hated Jordan during their high school days. Her nefarious fixation was due to the fact that she was thrown out from the cheerleader’s team and replaced with Jordan. While talking to Patty she remembers Rhonda Wilkes and decides to reach out to her. She realizes that all the promotional videos and resources Liz has are actually plagiarised from Rhonda’s content.
Rhonda discloses that Liz has childhood trauma, and Jordan largely represents the obstacle to all her happiness. Jordan, disgusted by Liz’s story, furiously questions the credibility of the whole business of life coaches and advises Rhonda to send people to doctors in case they are showing signs of a troubled mental state. Liz eavesdrops Rhonda’s phone conversation with Jordan and stabs Rhonda. With Natalie gone for so many days, Jordan decides to trap Liz all by herself.
Jordan, with Peter’s help, invites Liz over to have one last session. Liz arrives, and an altercation breaks out. Liz confesses to having killed Natalie and proceeds to kill Jordan. Unbeknownst to Liz, her confessions are getting recorded. In the end, the police detective comes and handcuffs Liz. He also brings Natalie with him, who is alive and healthy, and they reconcile. The film ends with Jordan reconciling with Tara after owning up to her mistake of not being able to read Tara’s intentions and Tara’s closing remarks: “Sounds like to me you hired the wrong life coach.”
