Directed by Michael Lukk Litwak, the sci-fi rom-com film “Molli And Max In The Future” (2024) is quite honestly a brilliant attempt to resurrect the classic filmmaking style. The film follows the encounter between two accidentally met people who become best friends and eventually turn into lovers over the course of 12 years, four planets, three dimensions, and one space cult. The most interesting takeaway from this film is how the crew has managed to pull off this project with so little in their hands. This is definitely not a big-budget production, But the way it was executed deserves more accolades.

Molli And Max In The Future (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis
The film starts with Molli roaming in the asteroid belt, looking for magic power crystals. It is her hobby to collect these crystals and stock them. By the way, roaming on this side and collecting these crystals is highly illegal. However, this is Molli we are talking about. Molli detects a huge crystal, and before she can have a piece of it, a spaceship out of nowhere crashes against the crystal, and the driver falls on her spaceship. The man introduces himself as Max and says the spaceship is priceless since he has made it himself. Molli hears it for the very first time that people can actually make their own ship.
Molli takes him for a mentally unstable creature. But soon realizes that Max already knows her intentions of stealing power crystals. Max asks her to give him a lift in exchange for a power crystal. Since Molli was looking for it in the first place, an agreement is formed. Molli later learns that Max is a fan of robotics and that his dream is to take part in one of the Mecha-fightings that happen in Megalopolis. Later, since she has an agreement to fulfill, drives Max back to his home, Oceanus. Molli invites Max to visit again because she wants to give him a better idea of how civilization works around the universe since he has been praising humans a lot.
What does Max Learn about Molli when they Meet again?
Max starts to grow some feelings for Molli in the meantime as they see each other on a regular basis. But, one day, Molli suddenly decides to join the Moebius army so that she can go to battles, just as she has always dreamt. Max tries to look for an opportunity to stop her from going there. But he gets the feeling that Molli is very enthusiastic about this opportunity. So he stays back without expressing much about how he feels. Molli goes out for her venture to share the new experience with the demi-god Moebius. Five galactic years later, Molli gets into a cab and finds Max in there.
He has changed completely since the last time with short hair, sunglasses, and very handsome attire. Max does not recognize her at first, but later, they share a laugh together. He has now become this huge mecha-fighter just as he always dreamt, and now he is celebrated through galaxies. Max has basically become a star who does commercials for different products as well. But, when Max asks Molli about her life so far, what she answers quite literally shakes him. Molli says that she is here in Megalopolis just for the weekend as she will be moving out soon for an outreach mission for the Citadel.
She says that Citadel does not allow outer contact, and this is the reason why she does not know anything about Max’s success. Moebius, on the other hand, challenged her notion of love and relationships as all the Passionauts in the Citadel are in one single relationship. Moebius works as a mediator between them and Triangulon, the god of Love. So, to communicate with Triangulon, the Passionauts need to have intercourse with Moebius and with each other. Listening to the whole story, Max tells Molli that she is explaining the routine of a cult. However, Molli refuses to agree with him and leaves the cab. Since she has become a level seven witch now, she knows how to fly.
What does Max confess to Molli?
A few years have passed since they last met, and finally, Max meets with Molli again on public transport. We see the notion that Max is hated by everyone, and Molli is too frustrated and disappointed with her life. So, together, they sit in a cafe and wear helmets that will take them on a time travel ride. There, Max confesses to Molli how things have changed for him from the time Molli left him. To remove the void that was created due to Molli’s absence and the constant abuse from his father, Max, who is half-fish and half-human, has decided to concentrate solely on building the perfect robot to take part in the mecha-fighting.
He has progressed rapidly, and he has won it all that should have given him the sponsorship he was looking for. But, sadly, there was no one ready to sponsor Max. Later, he focused on machine learning and built a robot named MAR14 that should work like Gervis, Iron Man’s acquaintance. MAR14 actually turned the events for Max as she gave him a new identity, changed his appearance, and even upgraded the robot Max used in fighting. Max has now achieved everything with MAR14. Soon, Max starts doubting himself; he starts questioning whether he wants all of this in the first place.
MAR14 represents the PR agencies nowadays that can sell anything to the public. When Max decides to step down as a Mecha-fighter and starts losing the matches due to self-doubt, MAR14 pulls off a different trick to make Max relevant in the race. She lets the world know that Max is in a relationship with MAR14. Max breaks up with her, and she makes the best out of it as well. The world starts seeing Max as the bad guy, as he has broken up with an innocent robot. But, little did the world know how MAR14 has been controlling Max. Max confesses that the day he met with Molli in the cab, he realized that he must leave MAR14 in order to live freely.
Why does Molli decide to leave Moebius?
Molli is contacted by the demi-god Moebius to destroy the army of Dethos, the god of death. So, she answers the call and becomes a Passionaut, leaving behind everything to succeed in her path. Moebius teaches them to channel their magic through power crystals. But as time progresses and with all the intercourse around, Molli starts doubting her choice.
In between, she meets with Max, and he describes the Passionauts as a cult group. In order to clear her doubt, she questions her fellow Passionaut, Walter, whether they are a cult or not. Walter says that they are indeed a cult, and there is a documentary even based on them. This makes Molli very sad as she does not want to end up like this. So, one day, when the Passionauts successfully defeat the army of Dethos, they start celebrating.
Moebius turns himself in and asks to stop partying because there is a bigger war coming. Molli questions Moebius in front of everyone, saying that if he can actually see the future, he should be able to say when the war is coming. Moebius does not answer, and Molli leaves the group immediately because of her frustration. Molli then confesses to Max that had it not been for him, she would have never doubted herself and left the cult for good.
How do Max and Molli decide their Suitability as a Couple?
Nothing seems to work out for Max and Molli, and they reach a stage where they want things different from life. Max wants a stable relationship, and Molli wants to explore the universe with a perfect guy (who can change from time to time). So, together, they register themselves in Cyber Dating and meet with a couple of random strangers. No one seems to be interested in them, so they decide to date each other. Max says that they have already been doing that except for the intercourse part. But will that work out?
To know that, they order Pubox, through which they contact themselves in different universes. They ask them to get into a more physical relationship and see how it turns. A couple of weeks later, they find out that when they get physical, their bond weakens, and the friendship is totally lost. So, collecting the results from Max and Molli from different universes, Max and Molli from the present universe decide not to push the boundaries of their relationship beyond friendship.
Molli And Max In The Future (2024) Movie Ending Explained:
Why does Max decide to leave Molli?
Voting takes place to decide the ruler of the galaxy. On one hand, we have Rachel, who is kind, educated, empathetic, and has eczema. On the other hand, we have Turboschmuck, literally a demon from the trash dimension. Turboschmuck plans to bridge reality with the trash dimension, which will eventually mean the death of everyone in the galaxy. So, Max and Molli start promoting Rachel for the betterment of the galaxy. In the meantime, Max met with one of his fans from Mecha-fighting, Cassie, and started dating her. Molli, on the other hand, meets with her old pal Walter, and they get into a relationship as well.
On the final day, Rachel loses to Turboschmuck, and he openly announces that there will be a genocide and no one will come out alive. Max and Molli take a break and explore their different perspectives on life. They both think that they need a break from their relationships, but after sharing their problems with each other, they realize that they should give more time to their partners in order to grow the relationship.
A plague hits the galaxy, and Max meets with Molli again. Molli is emotionally damaged and kisses Max out of the blue. This shocks Max, and he resists taking the next step. He realizes that Molli is devastated because she recently broke up with Walter, and Max does not want to be her rebound partner. He has decided to leave with Cassie and his father. But Molli asks him not to settle this quickly.
Max leaves anyway, confessing that he has always loved Molli, but Molli is never ready to be serious with him. Later, Molli feels the void that Max has left after his departure. She tries calling him again and again, but there is no reply from his end until one day, Max answers. But all he talks about is the existence of possibility and impossibility in one loop. He brings Schrodinger’s cat’s example out of nowhere. Molli understands that Max needs help, so she brings out her spaceship to rescue her best friend.
Is Molli Able to Save Max?
Molli interferes with a black hole, and while she is trying to go past it, she interacts with Triangulon, the god of love. Talking to her, she realizes that she has hopelessly tried to find love in others while she is still enough for herself. The self-love is catered to by the presence of her best friend, Max, who needs saving. Triangulon does not help her much to avoid the black hole, but her instructions that lead to self-love help Molli, the level seven witch, perform some powerful magical stuff that transports her to Max through the black hole.
She confesses to Max that being who she is, she deserves a genius like Max, a great guy, best friend, and a wonderful companion with whom she can spend the rest of her life. Molli gives him the idea of a robot, and with the help of previously owned things, Max is successful in creating a giant robot that will help them get out of the quantum zone. They get into the robot, and the robot lifts off. Max and Molli finally find their connection. The accidental best friends start their journey one last time — this time as a couple.
