Amazon Prime Video has recently added a new series to the platform that you must add to your watch list. Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the latest American post-apocalyptic drama television series, “Fallout,” premiered on Prime Video on April 10, 2024. What makes it a must-watch series is the cast attached to it. The series stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Xelia Mendes-Jones, and Walton Goggins. And the cherry on top of all that is the mastermind Jonathan Nolan who has penned and directed the series. The series is based on the role-playing video game franchise. Amazon purchased the rights to produce a live-action project in 2020, and the show was announced in July. In the following article, we will take a look at Ghouls, which are an important part of “Fallout.”

What is the Fallout series all about?

Since the series was released just a week ago, many people have yet to watch it. For all those people, spoiler alert! But if you wish to see some action drama with a pinch of dark comedy, Fallout is your series.

The show depicts the aftermath of the Great War of 2077, an apocalyptic nuclear exchange in an alternate history of Earth where advances in nuclear technology after World War 2 led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society and a subsequent resource war. The people who survive the incident take refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults. However, they are unaware that each Vault was designed to perform psychological experiments on the Vault Dwellers. 219 years later in 2296, a young woman named Lucy (Ella Purnell), leaves behind her home in Vault 33 to venture out into the dangerously unforgiving wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles to look for her father. Along the way, she meets a Brotherhood of Steel squire and a ghoul bounty hunter, each with their own mysterious pasts and agendas to settle.

In the series, ghouls are humans who were infected by extreme radiation after the nuclear war and turned into mutants. These creatures may look like ghosts, but they’re actually post-humans. Bombs damage their skin, and their flesh decays over time, making them look monstrous and scary to anyone they meet.

One of those mutants, called simply the Ghoul, is played by Walton Goggins. He was previously known as Cooper Howard before becoming the Ghoul. Cooper was once a famous Hollywood actor and Vault-Tec ambassador who mutated into a ghoul after the bombs fell and now makes a living as a gunslinger and bounty hunter.

The series received critical acclaim, with praise for its writing, production design, performances, and faithfulness to the source material.

What are Ghouls in the show Fallout?

A ghoul is a demon-like being or monstrous humanoid, often associated with graveyards and the consumption of human flesh. The term originated in ancient Arabian mythology as part of a pre-Islamic religion. In Arabic, the term is also sometimes used to describe a greedy or gluttonous individual. A ghoul is a zombie-like creature that walks on two feet and is described as an ill-mannered and foul creature.

By extension, the word ghoul is also used in a derogatory sense to refer to a person who delights in the macabre or whose occupation directly involves death, such as a gravedigger or graverobber.

Fallout is available to be streamed on Amazon Prime.
