Renowned filmmaker Edgar Wright is in talks to helm the Barbarella feature starring Sydney Sweeney. While Wright and Sweeney’s names already hype the anticipation for the film, other names attached to the project add a layer to fans’ excitement. Set to be made under the production banner of Sony Pictures, the film will be penned by  Jane Goldman and Honey Ross. The film is still in development, given Sweeney’s busy schedule and Wright’s indulgence in his next project, which is set to be a new adaptation of “The Running Man” for Paramount Pictures.

Edgar Wright to Direct Starring Sydney Sweeney

In 1968 saw the release of the sci-fi film, “Barbarella,” directed by Roger Vadim. The film is based on the French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest. The movie stars Jane Fonda as the title character, a space traveler and representative of the United Earth government sent to find scientist Durand Durand, who has created a weapon that could destroy humanity.

Now, in Edgar Wright’s version of Barbarella, fans will witness Sweeney portray the character of Jean-Claude Forest. As for the members attached to this project, considering their previous resumes, something promising can be expected.

Wright is a prolific filmmaker who certainly needs no introduction.  He is known for his fast-paced and kinetic, satirical genre films. As for “Barbarella,” he has been eyeing the project for some time, taking a meeting with Sweeney right after it was first announced, but only committed to developing the project as something he would potentially direct. The studio and Wright have strong ties going back to his box-office hit “Baby Driver,” and the tone Sony and Sweeney are going for with this project falls in line with the fun and creative visual style the director is known for.

Goldman has helped launch such successful franchises as the rebooted X-Men movies starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender and Matthew Vaughn’s “The Kingsmen: Secret Service.” Meanwhile, Goldman’s daughter, Ross, worked on the BBC One series “Everything I Know About Love.”

The lead actress of the film, Sweeney, is fresh off the success of her most recent Sony picture, “Anyone But You.” The actress is currently in high demand in Hollywood, as apart from “Barbarella,” she has also nabbed  Apple Films’ “Echo Valley” among her upcoming projects.

The original 1968 film wasn’t a massive box office hit but has since become a cult classic. Now, it would be interesting to see if Wright and his team can bring the same magic to the film or not.
