Visionary filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos seems unstoppable. After the success of his film Poor Things, his latest film, Kinds of Kindness, recently had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024. While Yorgos Lanthimos’ projects were indeed attention-worthy, the director has now announced another upcoming feature project. The film is titled Bugonia, and it features Lanthimos’ favorite collaborator, Emma Stone, alongside Jesse Plemons. Both actors recently teamed up with Lanthimos for his latest movie, Kinds of Kindness.

Everything about Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming project

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is all set with his upcoming project, Bugonia, which will be penned by acclaimed screenwriter Will Tracy. Lanthimos’ films often feature uniquely framed cinematography, deadpan acting, and characters with stilted speech.

It will be interesting to see whether Lanthimos will continue with his same approach or explore his storytelling style in his upcoming film. Bugonia follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

This film is based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet. Miky Lee’s CJ ENM will develop the English-language version with Midsommar director Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen at Square Peg.

Interestingly, unlike Lanthimos’ other films, Poor Things and The Favourite and the upcoming Kinds of Kindness, this film will not be produced under the production banner of Screenlight. Rather, Bugonia has been picked up by Focus Features for the U.S., with Universal Pictures distributing internationally.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe will produce for Element Pictures, along with Lanthimos, Aster, Knudsen, Stone, Lee, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko, for CJ ENM, which is co-financing with Fremantle.

As for the movie’s casting, Lanthimos is once again reuniting with his previous allies, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. Both actors recently worked together under Lanthimos’s direction in Kinds of Kindness. Meanwhile, Stone is a frequent collaborator of Lanthimos, as the actor-director duo has filmed together movies like The Favourite, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and now Bugonia.

Lanthimos’ latest feature, Kinds of Kindness, received generally positive reviews. The Hollywood Reporter’s Cannes review reads:

“You get a sense while watching that Lanthimos is reinvigorated by the opportunities of the tripartite structure and the chance to subvert the rules of both society and storytelling. It may not be as thematically cohesive on a first watch as some audiences will wish for, but the longer you mull it over, the more the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit and the common threads start to emerge.”

As per the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 95% of 21 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.5/10.

Kinds of Kindness is scheduled to be released in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on June 21, 2024.
