Veterans from the Hollywood industry have come together for the upcoming adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel, Project Hail Mary. Slated to release on March 20, 2026, the film features an ensemble cast. While it was previously announced that Barbie actor Ryan Gosling is involved in the project, it has been recently revealed by Deadline that Sandra Hüller, who recently received an Oscar nomination for her performance in Anatomy of a Fall, has joined the Ryan Gosling for the cast of Project Hail Mary.
The premise of the film follows the story of a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.
Gosling will lead the film as he portrays Ryland Grace. Meanwhile, Hüller’s role is being kept under wraps, but it has been speculated that she might step into the role of Eva Stratt, the former ESA employee tasked with spearheading the project to save humanity.
What do we know about ‘Project Hail Mary’ starring Ryan Gosling & Sandra Huller?
Project Hail Mary is set to be made under the directorial vision of acclaimed filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Lord and Miller are best known for working on The Lego Movie and Spider-Verse film series, which won them the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and a nomination for the aforementioned award for producing the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).
Both Lord and Miller grew up making short films with an affinity for animation, but now what they are set to helm is certainly different from their previous work, but their talent certainly cannot be doubted. They will also serve as producers of the film, along with Amy Pascal and Aditya Sood. Pascal will produce through her Pascal Pictures along with Rachel O’Connor, as will Gosling via his General Admissions company; Lord, Miller, and Sood will produce via Lord Miller. Weir will also produce.
The script of the upcoming movie is penned by Drew Goddard, who previously served as the writer for The Martian, another space story similar to Project Hail Mary starring Matt Damon.
Lucy Kitada and Nikki Baida, via Lord Miller, Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Ken Kao, and Patty Whitcher, are executive producers. Greig Fraser is the film’s director of photography.
Project Hail Mary will be filmed for IMAX and released wide in theaters on March 20, 2026.
