Hierarchy (Season 1) Episode 1 “Newbie Party: Truth or Dare” Recap:
The episode begins apprehensively as In Han runs with a bruised face, talking to someone on call and saying he will expose Jooshin High and everything happening there. Before he can escape, a car hits In Han, and he dies. Jooshin High is buzzing with students today, and it is the first semester opening day. Each year, Jooshin High gives a chance to a student through a scholarship to attend the prestigious school. This year’s scholarship student is Kang Ha.
As the ceremony concludes, teachers direct students back to their classrooms. Unaware of the school’s social hierarchy, Kang Ha stands to leave but is stopped by his peers. Only when Ri-An rises, do the others follow, and Kang Ha mistakenly enters a private teaching room instead of his class. Upon finding his correct class, he is unwelcome by his classmates and forced to sit in a chair with a broken desk. After some classes, He-Ra flirts with Ri-An, asking him to let her take the place of Queen Jae Yi until she arrives. Unfortunately, Ri-Ah lets He-Ra down as he is still in love with Jae Yi. After a disappointing conversation with Ri-An, He-Ra picks up Jae Yi from the airport. Jae Yi requests that she bring the group together to the race track as she has something to say.
What wish does Jae Yi ask Ri-An to grant?
Later that day, Jae Yi has lunch with her parents and Assemblyman Lee’s family, but Jae Yi does not seem to be thrilled to be there. After lunch, Chairman Jung (Jae Yi’s father) asks Jae Yi to dress like her mother for tea. To which Jae Yi snaps, asking which mother he is talking about since her birth mother is different from his wife (Jae Yi’s stepmother). Frustrated by Jae Yi’s tone, Chairman Jung insults Jae Yi and her birth mother. Jae Yi tears her top and smokes vape. As Jae Yi is busy contemplating, Kang Ha meets her and says he works part-time playing the piano and, upon request, gives his shirt to Jae Yi.
At the racetrack, the atmosphere is jittery as Jae Yi asks to race three laps with Ri-An, and the winner gets to ask for a wish. They begin their race, but it is apparent that it is not as friendly as it seems. Jae Yi drives recklessly but wins. As agreed, Jae Yi asks her wish to break up without an explanation, ruining Ri-An’s mood. In the stands, Ri-An’s friends give him tips on how to win over Jae Yi when they notice Kang Ha trying to sit in the stands with them just before Kang Ha’s upperclassmen stop him.
Since Kang Ha has yet to understand the hierarchy, Chae-Min, a senior scholarship student, tells Kang Ha to stay away from the rich kids as they consider themselves royalty. Furthermore, Chae-Min says that the reason he is in school is because the previous scholarship student crossed a line, and Ri-An killed him. Despite all the warnings, Kang Ha smiles and decides to go ahead and do as he pleases.
What happens at the party?
The next thing Kang Ha does is go ahead and introduce himself to Ri-An, who ignores him, but He-Ra decides to invite him to a party. At the party, He-Ra has arranged a surprise for Jae Yi so Ri-An can win over her. Kang Ha arrives at the party to be taken aback by the craziness. Once Kang Ha settles in, He-Ra and others force Kang Ha to take a shot despite saying he does not drink. After taking the shot, Kang Ha doesn’t feel well. Although he throws up, he continues staying at the party to play a game of truth or dare.
Meanwhile, Jae Yi receives a message with many videos asking if she remembers October 27th last year and if her father would appreciate seeing the videos. However, Jae Yi is distracted as she gets Ri-An’s call and meets him. In the room, Ri-An apologizes despite not knowing what he has done. But Jae Yi says she does not care about the apology and wants Ri-An to accept the break-up without any explanation. During the truth or dare game, the others give Kang Ha a dare to French kiss a girl for three minutes. Kang Ha chooses to kiss Jae Yi in front of Ri-An. As this goes on, we hear Kang Ha’s voice and a flashback of Kang Ha mourning in Han, promising to expose the person killed in Han.

At school, Kang Ha recognizes another student, Tae-ho, who belongs to the wealthy class. As Kang Ha approaches Tae-Ho, Tae-Ho is rude to Kang Ha, and other students make fun of Kang Ha. In a flashback, another student tells Kang Ha that In Han was probably killed by Ri-An because In Han was friends with Jae Yi.
Meanwhile, Ri-An warns Jae Yi that he will do whatever it takes to discover why Jae Yi is breaking up with him and ensure they get back together. As a warning, one of the students orders the other scholarship students not to talk to Kang Ha; if they do, they will be punished. Knowing what trouble awaits, Chae-min tries to hit Kang Ha, but Kang Ha twists Chae-min’s fingers, and Ms. Han stops the boys from fighting.
Jae Yi’s secret
After class, Kang Ha apologizes to Jae Yi for making her uncomfortable during the party. At the same time, he says he didn’t hate kissing her that night. As advice, Jae Yi asks Kang Ha to drop out of school for his own good. As Ri-Na is watching videos of Jae Yi and himself, He-Ra interrupts him and thinks he should fake date someone to make Jae Yi jealous so they can get back together. At a bar, Jae Yi gets another video from an anonymous person asking if the person should send the video to Jae Yi’s father.
In a flashback, In Han meets with Jae Yi, who says she is pregnant and is worried about her father. Since Chairman Jung banished Jae Yi’s mother after hearing about Jae Yi’s pregnancy, he wouldn’t think twice about doing the same to her. To comfort Jae Yi, In Han hugs her, but Jae Yi notices In Han carrying a pen that records videos. The other students enter the room before Jae Yi can confront him and take In Han away.
Kang Ha’s suspicions
At school, Kang Ha witnesses students giving Ri-An some tablets. In a flashback, In Han tells Kang Ha that his drink was spiked, and Kang Ha does not understand the kind of school Jooshin is in. The other scholarship students are planning to hurt Kang Ha during the school’s forest retreat. Ju-Won overhears it and visits the principal’s office to give some documents. While Ju-Won is there, he calls the principal ‘Mom’ and asks how she covered up Han’s murder. The principal feigns ignorance and asks Ju-Won to make friends wisely since the rich kids will help him in his career later.

Weighing the consequences, He-Ra decides to get help. During the school retreat, Ju-Won advises Kang Ha to avoid the other students.
Meanwhile, Ms. Han sends Kang Ha on an errand to a drugstore. As Kang Ha leaves for the drugstore, he meets Jae Yi, who asks him to join him and sits on his bicycle. As they go together, He-Ra and Ri-An watch Jae Yi and Kang Ha. It starts to rain heavily as Jae Yi and Kang Ha reach the drugstore but eventually decide to leave. Once they arrived at the retreat location, Jae Yi asked Kang Ha to come to her villa so she could dry his shirt. Meanwhile, Woo-Jin brings Ms. Han to his room to spend time together.
Does Jae Yi know who Kang Ha is?
As they chat, Ms. Han tells Woo-Jin that she has seen Kang Ha enter Jae Yi’s villa, which he informs Ri-An. At the same time, Jae Yi confesses to Kang Ha that she didn’t hate the kiss during the party either. Infuriated, Ri-An barges with the principal inside Jae Yi’s room, and Kang Ha gets yelled at. Before the principal arrives, Kang Ha is wearing a thread similar to the one In Han was wearing, and Jae Yi seems to recognize it.
During the disciplinary hearing, the board framed Kang Ha for forcefully entering Jae Yi’s villa. Just before the board decides on the punishment, Jae Yi barges in and says she has invited Kang Ha to her villa and dragged him out. As they get out, Ri-An stops them, and Jae Yi says she likes Kang Ha, and if anyone lays a finger on him, they will answer her. In a flashback, we see Jae Yi getting Kang Ha’s background information. At present, Jae Yi asks Kang Ha about his real purpose for attending Jooshin High.

To make matters worse for Ri-An, Jae Yi move Kang Ha to special classes so he can attend classes with Ri-An, He-Ra, Woo-Jin, and herself. Meanwhile, Chae-Min begs and apologizes to Kang Ha, saying he felt pressured and that’s why he had to bully Kang Ha. Someone is looking out for Kang Ha. Moreover, there is a note in his locker asking Kang Ha not to provoke Ri-An, as that’s how the bullying started for In Han.
Who is helping Kang Ha?
In the stands, after winning a game, Ri-An kisses He-Ra. All her friends start calling He-Ra ‘Queen He-Ra’ since she is dating Ri-An. While the game is on, Kang Ha suspects someone is helping him, and the person asks to meet privately to discuss the matter. Meanwhile, the principal (Hae Seon) has folders of the rich kids, which she delivers to Ri-An’s mother. At Ri-An’s house, Ri-An’s mother asks to hold a parent conference so she can be there for her son. Meanwhile, Kang Ha meets Tae-Ho, the person helping him. Unfortunately, Ju-Won sees them and overhears their conversation. During their discussion, Kang Ha asks Tae-Ho to get Ri-An’s locker password so he can catch the drug distribution within the campus and report it to the police.
Meanwhile, Jae Yi continues to receive videos and messages blackmailing her. This time, Jae Yi responds by asking what the person wants. Unfortunately for Jae Yi, her father wants to set her up with one of the sons of Gongseong Group. Later, Jae Yi and He-Ra meet, and Jae Yi offends He-Ra by saying she is no match for Ri-An.

At the conference, Jae Yi refuses to help out He-Ra, which adds insult to injury because the reason why Jae Yi does not help her is that she is not interested. Meanwhile, Ri-An’s mother and Jae Yi’s father compete about their business goals and why both children can never be together. Meanwhile, He-Ra notices Ri-An looking out for Jae Yi and, with all the frustration, brings Kang Ha in front of Chairman Jung and introduces Kang Ha as Jae Yi’s boyfriend.
