Lonely Planet (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Lonely Planet” opens in Morocco as Katherine, a 40-year-old author, arrives for a writer’s retreat. Since Katherine is a famous writer, the owner of the stay has given Katherine the best room. Even though Katherine is here for a writer’s retreat, she prefers to avoid all group activities as she is in Morocco to finish writing her book. The next day, a couple, Lily and Owen, arrive at the stay. The writer between the couple is Lily, who has written a best-selling novel. Meanwhile, Katherine has just gone through a break-up, and the man irritates Katherine to look at houses so she can move out soon.

Later that day, the other writers arrive. Owen lets Lily chat with Rafih (another writer). At dinner, Owen feels out of place as he does not have much to contribute to the conversation. Among the writers is a Nobel Prize-winning writer who correctly guesses that Lily dedicated her book to Owen. When Lily says she can finish and publish the book because of Owen, the Nobel Prize-winning author does not believe in that statement and tells Owen that he is an amenity for Lily’s writing. Much later in the night, Owen needs to take work calls, so he heads up to the terrace as there isn’t reception in the room.

How do Katherine and Owen get acquainted?

There, Owen bumps into Katherine, who is lost. Owen helps her find the way to her room. The next day, Owen asks Lily to meet with the reporter and do her thing and decides to explore the town. At the same time, Katherine’s room has a water problem, so the hotel staff asks Katherine to go on an expedition where Katherine won’t be disturbed.

Unfortunately, Owen joins the expedition. When Owen tries to converse, Katherine stops him and explains that she needs to write. Soon, they reach a market, and Owen heads out on his own, exploring the area. Eventually, Katherine stops to eat at a café, and Owen joins her. Now Owen reveals that he hates traveling, and people always say that you find a different self when you travel, but Owen does not believe that to be true.

However, Katherine believes travel helps people become modest. Eventually, Owen reveals that he is in Morocco because of Lily. As Katherine and Owen explore, Katherine mentions that she was in Morocco to finish a book and couldn’t finish the book at home. They start their journey back to the hotel, but the car breaks down.

Soon, the driver’s brother, Aziz, arrives and takes them to his house to have the car fixed. It is a big family, and they provide food and drinks to Owen and Katherine. Once the car is fixed, Katherine and Owen head back. In the car, Owen reveals that this was Lily’s first book, and she became a best-selling author overnight. Hearing this, Katherine becomes concerned as it is an extreme situation, but Owen assures Katherine that Lily is doing well.

Why is Owen mad at Lily?

At the hotel, Owen hangs out with Lily and the other writers. In the room, Lily is surprised to hear that Owen has spent time hanging out with Katherine. The conversation ends abruptly as Owen gets a work call. The next day, there is a lot of noise in Katherine’s room as men are fixing the pipes, so Katherine asks Hamid to let her use a closet to sit in peace and work.

Hamid rescues Kathrine by letting her use the storage room. Meanwhile, Owen hangs out with Lily and her writer friends. Later that day, Fathima (the organizer) asks Katherine to join the group for dinner. When Lily sees Katherine, she is excited and talks to her. Even though Katherine smiles while having the conversation, it is evident that she is uncomfortable.

After dinner, the group plays a game, and Katherine is good at it. The theme is literature, and when it is Owen’s turn to perform, Lily cuts him off and insults Owen. Soon, Owen steps out for a drink. After a while, Katherine finds Owen and takes him to her room. As they drink, they converse and get to know each other.

Now Owen is curious why Katherine can’t write at home, and before she begins her story, Owen needs to take a work call. The following day, Lily has great news: her publisher wants to make a two-book deal. For that to happen, they must make a reasonable offer so Lily can become financially self-sufficient. When Owen is casual about the news, Lily gets upset.

Now, Owen expresses how he felt the previous night when Lily insulted him. According to Lily, it was a joke, but it hurt Owen. They get on with their day but are still mad at each other. Soon, Owen leaves the hotel to explore the town. As Owen eats in a café, he sees Katherine. Owen secretly follows Katherine, but soon Katherine notices Owen.

In the room, Owen pukes because of food poisoning from eating a sandwich in town. Unfortunately, since Owen is sick, he can’t go on the desert tour, so Lily heads out alone. Later in the day, Owen hangs out in the pool when Katherine and Ugo join him. The next day, Owen and Katherine head out to town, where Owen expresses his dilemma with work.

Why did Owen leave Lily?

Owen has bought a great property, but the owner (Seller) wants to stick around. Initially, Owen’s bosses agreed to let the seller be the CEO, but now the plan is to kick the owner out. So Owen is unsure of what is the right thing to do. Meanwhile, Katherine reveals that she has broken up with her boyfriend, whom she has been dating for 14 years. After 14 years, the ex-boyfriend has told Katherine that she is incapable of love. That night, Owen sees the writer’s group high. Among them is Lily. The following day, Lily and Owen fight as Lily thinks Owen has been aloof, and Owen believes she is having the time of her life. Unfortunately, they fight in front of the storage room, and Katherine hears everything.

At night, Owen drinks a lot by the pool, and Katherine stays by Owen’s side. One thing leads to another, and Katherine and Owen start kissing. As things get intimate, Katherine calls Owen a kid, which offends him. So Owen leaves the place immediately. The following day, Lily converses with Owen, hoping to find a solution to mend their relationship.

During the conversation, Lily mentions that neither of them is perfect and recommends returning home and starting over. Precisely at that moment, Rafih sends a picture of a nude Lily to Lily’s phone, wanting to see her like that again. This was enough for Owen to pack up and leave. Before leaving to explore the town, Owen asks Katherine to join him. Surprisingly, Katherine agrees, and they head out.

Lonely Planet (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Will Katherine and Owen’s Love Triumph Over Their Complicated Past?

In an alleyway, Katherine and Owen start kissing. Soon, they come to the hotel and have sex with each other. After sex, Owen expresses that he feels happy around Katherine, and she reciprocates the feeling. The next day, Owen is honest with the seller about the company’s plans and asks the seller to take the offer back if he wants. Soon, Katherine and Owen head out, sit, and talk in the ocean.

Unfortunately, a thief steals Katherine’s bag, and in it is Katherine’s book draft. Sadly, Katherine has no backup and needs to work on the book again. Katherine is rattled and decides to return home, look for a place to live, and finish the book. In the panicked state, she indirectly calls Owen a distraction, making him upset.

A few months pass, and Katherine publishes her next book and promotes it at an event. In the same town and bar, Owen hangs out with his friends. Suddenly, Owen turns to see Katherine hanging out with her peers. Owen stops by to say hello and leaves as his friends call out to him. Once Owen leaves, Katherine runs behind Owen to apologize to him, as she has meant to call him all along. Furthermore, Katherine says the name of her book is The Swing Route, which Owen had mentioned to her. In the end, Katherine and Owen kiss on the city’s sidewalks.

In the end, Katherine and Owen will get together. Owen’s relationship arc is interesting as an overnight best-selling author made him feel small just because he was not into literature. Yet, a famous author with much experience made him feel comfortable and safe. It made sense for Owen to have feelings for Katherine even though he was still dating Lily.

At the same time, Lily probably wanted a free and modern relationship where her partner needed to be open to new experiences, which Rafih provided for Lily. However, the movie does not give us details about what happened to Lily’s relationship with Rafih. In the end, the forbidden love won!
