Directed by Karan Sharma and produced by Dinesh Vijan (โStreeโ Universe), โBhool Chuk Maafโ attempts a genre mashup with a big dollop of social commentary. However, despite a palatable turn by its eclectically assembled, talented cast, the Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi-starrer time-loop comedy gets stuck in its repetitive structure, too contrived to gloss over its follies. The social commentary on employment does not flow like a coherent undertone; it pops up suddenly like an acrimonious and unwelcome pustule.
The only way the film works is if you have a hankering for Benaras Ghats. The filmโs story revolves around a central character who is stuck in a time loop. Let us see how he gets into it and how he gets out.
Bhool Chuk Maaf (2025) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:
Ranjan (Rajkummar Rao) and Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi) love each other. All they want is to marry and start their life together. The only obstacle to their dream is unemployment. Titliโs father, understandably, will not allow a marriage where the couple has no idea where the money will come from. After a botched attempt to elope, Ranjan and Titli plead with Titliโs father. Softened, he agrees to give Ranjan two months to get a government job. Getting a government job in India is a herculean task. So, Ranjan knows he has no chance of fulfilling that condition, especially in two months.
Ranjan tries one of the most tried-and-tested methods to secure a government job: bribery and cheating. He gets in touch with an aged agent named Bhagwan (Sanjay Mishra). Bhagwan informs that there might be an opening in the Irrigation Department. Fifteen candidates are selected for that. If Ranjan can furnish two lakhs rupees, Bhagwan can try to get Ranjanโs name added to that selection list. But Ranjan does not have that kind of money. As a last resort, Titli decides to mortgage her motherโs necklace, made of gold.
Things, however, do not work out as they hope. After giving Bhagwan the money, Ranjan is awakened by his friends with a piece of terrible news. It appears Bhagwan fled with the money. His office is closed, and no one can get in touch with him. A devastated Ranjan, scolded by Titli, sees no other option. In a classic Bollywood style, Ranjan turns to God. Out of desperation, and not really expecting anything, Ranjan prays to Lord Shiva. He promises to do one good deed if Lord Shiva grants his wish of marrying Titli. That promise (โMannatโ in Hindi) is like a divine bond between God and humans.
The very next day, the results show. Ranjan receives a call from Bhagwan. It seems the agent did not abscond with the money. He simply went to another city to arrange Ranjanโs job. He informs that the work is done. Ranjan has got the job now. No more obstacles for Ranjan and Titli, as both sidesโ families meet up to arrange the wedding date. The wedding is scheduled on the 30th of the current month. On the 29th, Ranjan wakes up for the pre-wedding ceremonies. After having a lot of fun with his friends, family, and Titli, Ranjan goes to sleep. Hoping to wake up for his wedding day. Except, 30th never comes. Ranjan wakes up the next morning to find the date once again being 29th.
Bhool Chuk Maaf (2025) Movie Ending Explained:
Why Did Ranjan Get Stuck in the Time Loop?
Initially brushing off as a bad dream, Ranjan soon realizes that he is stuck in a time loop as he wakes up on the same day every day. He simply cannot be on his wedding day. He is stuck in the previous day. Flabbergasted, he discusses these with his friends and Titli. Of course, barring Ranjan, everyone elseโs memory gets reset every day. Naturally, Ranjan starts each of these 29th days with humongous efforts to make his friends and Titli believe in the time loop.
With some help, Ranjan realizes that something divine has happened with him. He realizes he has not fulfilled his promise to Lord Shiva, the one about doing one good deed if Lord Shiva grants his wish. Since he is about to be married, it appears that God has come knocking at Ranjanโs door. So, Ranjan tries to fulfill his promise. He does a lot of good deeds. From feeding animals to sheltering the people experiencing homelessness. However, nothing seems to work. He keeps on waking up on the 29th.
How Did Ranjan Escape the Loop?
When his โgood deedsโ do not do the trick, Ranjan asks for help from the priest, who tells him to pray to Lord Shiva in the first place. The priest tells him that there is a possibility that he has hurt someone severely. Only that can explain his extraordinary predicament. So, Ranjan goes on a spree to apologize to everyone he knows. It still does not work. Resigned to his fate, Ranjan decides to kill himself. As he readies himself to jump into the Ganges, he finds another man having the same idea. He saves that manโs life.
This manโs name is Hamid Ansari. He soon realizes that the reason Ansari is killing himself is because of him. Hamid Ansari got the Irrigation Department job by passing the exam. However, Bhagwan used his tricks to get Ansariโs name removed, to be replaced by Ranjanโs name. Ansari wants to become a government officer in the Irrigation Department to help his village. Without proper irrigation, Ansariโs village does not even have proper drinking water. Ansari took it upon himself to change that. Now, Ranjan is faced with the harshest of choices. He can choose to save Ansari and reverse this wrongdoing. But, doing so, he will lose Titli forever. He chooses to do the right, regardless of the consequences.
Do Ranjan and Titli Get Married?
As Ranjan has Bhagwan reverse the fraud, Ansari gets the job. Ranjan becomes unemployed once again. Despite his friendsโ protests, Ranjan confesses to everything on the wedding day in front of his parents, Titli, Titliโs parents, and his friends. As Titli and everyone scold him for leaving the government job, Bhagwan enters. He informs everyone about Ansariโs reason for having the job. Bhagwan goes on a rant about how nobody does the right thing anymore.
Ranjan, sacrificing his love, did the right thing. He saved not only Ansariโs life, but also Ansariโs village. Bhagwan professes that he is proud to have done this work for Ranjan. Bhagwanโs rousing speech does the trick. Everyone embraces Ranjanโs goodness and honesty. Even Titliโs father appreciates Ranjanโs integrity. As a result, Ranjan and Titli do get married, despite Ranjan not fulfilling the โjobโ criterion.
